I sold my Apple TV 2 (jailbroken, untethered) for $180 on ebay a couple weeks ago. You should be able to get $150+ if it's jailbroken. Probably $125+ if not.

Am I missing something? Why would anyone pay even $125 for an older, used, unupdateable version of something they can buy new for $69???

V2 can be jailbroken and then apps can be installed to watch new movies and TV for free. V3 can not be jailbroken from what I understand.

That is correct. People who like the jailbroken ATV2 install XBMC on it and use it for all sorts of things, and hence are willing to pay more for ATV2 since it is no longer produced and the ATV3 can't be jailbroken.

It is worth noting, however, that one CAN install PlexConnect on the ATV3 and get very similar functionality to XBMC, with the caveat that you must have it linked to a Plex Server on your home computer (while XBMC can work in a standalone way).

Anyway, with PlexConnect capability I decided the main benefits of XBMC were now duplicated, and made some money back by upgrading to ATV3.

Thanks. I'll pick up a v3 and sell my v2 and actually make money. Hard to argue with that.

I have purchased a total of 4 Apple TVs since 2010: One ATV2 for $108 new, another ATV2 for $92 refurbished, and then two ATV3's for $82 refurbished each to replace the ATV2's. (all costs include sales tax).

In other words I have spent a total of $364 on 4 Apple TVs, and made $450 selling two of them on ebay.

Long story short: I made $86 by using Apple TVs on two of my TVs for the last 4 years. Thanks Apple! (and ebay)

Time to update that UI. It's become very cumbersome. Mildly easier if you use the remote app on iPhone, but still.

At least the UI can be updated without a hardware refresh. Hopefully they've got someone working on it, at least from the design side.

Why do you want to use an Apple TV over a Roku? Unless you buy a lot of movies through iTunes the Roku is better. It has more content options. The Apple TV has AirPlay but I will tell you from first hand experience that AirPlay has turned to trash lately. It hardly ever works.

I own both and use both.

However, I only use Roku if it isn't available on Apple TV.

For example, Netflex always starts on the highest resolution on ATV. On Roku it starts in a low resolution and takes about 30-60 seconds to go full HD. The ATV takes longer to start but I get the best quality from the beginning.

HBO GO is also much better on the Apple TV. However, Roku is better for YouTube if you do your search on the iPhone or Android.

Of course Roku is always better when the channel isn't on the ATV.

ATV is almost universally better if it has the channel.

Yes, long buffering times or no connect etc.when selecting movies through the ATV interface.

I found that if open up the ATV and I start a movie in iTunes and then in iTunes select Airplay it shows up much faster and is more reliable.

Don't know if that works for everybody though (MBP Late 2008)

On a separate note Apple has to give the ATV some TLC, maybe they need an ATV visionary.

Doesn't look like there was one lately.

I wonder if the refurbished units will also get the price drop? I would think so, since no one is going to buy a refurbished unit for $75 when you can get a new one for $69.

A refurbished Apple TV for $45 plus tax? Now we're talking!

The refurbished Apple Tv is now 59.00

I think that means that we're not likely to see an upgraded box soon. Apple doesn't play the game of "lower price to clear inventory then ship new".

That's funny. I think this means that we're soon going to learn that HBO Now requires a current Apple TV.

So this means no new AppleTV anytime soon. Or that's what I read into it.

Does Apple ever drop the price in the months before a new model is coming out?
Not that I can recall.

This doesn't strike me as a clear out old inventory play.

And so I might as well buy one now.

Return it. Then buy it.

Can we do that? I bought a refurbished ATV3 online about a month ago. . . do you know off the top of your head the return policy? (it's opened and been in use).
Might not be worth my time, as the cost savings for refurbished is only $16 (I paid 75 plus tax for refurbished, now refurbished is only $59).

I don't have Roku, but Apple TV definitely handles HBO Go better than PS3 or Chromecast for me. With the price drop on the Apple TV, I'm thinking about getting a second one for my living room. Current one is in my bedroom. Haven't been too happy with the PS3's HBO performance in the living room.

Wake me up when they support plex like every other device going

HBO go and similar apps are actually better on Xbox one

I did get a couple roku 3 boxes which support plex but have a crap ui. A $49 Apple TV stick that could run apps such as plex etc would probably make them a ton of money

Always worked for me. And now with the new MacBook I will be using it even more.
