The A12Z that powers these 2018 Pros is still really fast. I have two of them and have never felt the need to upgrade to M1 or M2. These are probably a better choice than than the new base and Air iPads for many.

ProMotion and Gen 2 Apple Pencil support beats out these newer devices in my opinion.
Yeah, I had a 2018 12.9 that had a weird battery module failure, and I decided to just go ahead and pull the trigger on a 2021 12.9. I had no complaints of speed, only the 4GB of RAM and closing apps. That and the display for movies are the only differences I notice between 2018 and 2021.

This is a great deal across the board. (Lame that Apple didn't lower the refurb prices on the M1 MBA after they launched the M2 MBA, for greedy misers like me. 😁)

This is a MUCH better value than the new iPad. Much better ProMotion display, Apple Pencil 2 support.

Is the 2020 iPad Air a good iPad to buy for around the same price as the new 10th gen?

The 2020 Air is a great iPad.

Get the Air if you prioritize Pencil 2 support, a better display, better speakers, and its keyboards.

Get the iPad 10 if you prioritize landscape camera, its keyboards, and longer OS support.

It'd be nice if the 12.9" would drop some too. Of course everyone would love a cheaper item, but my main use case I miss an iPad for is sheet music organization. Some larger display without ProMotion would be fine, axe a few other 'pro' things. $600+ is too much for what becomes a glorified pdf viewer. Besides, we need a sixth option in the lineup since it's too simple /s

I think I’ll get the 2020. However I do have a gen 1 pencil so it would be cool if the new adapter worked with the air.

I’m not going to use any keyboard so display and speakers are the priorities and the option of using pencil 2 is cool as it’s a much better design than the 1st gen.

I just hope the processor is good enough for the future as I’m planning on using it for years to come. The most cpu intensive task I would be doing is the Adobe photoshop app but mostly university stuff like note taking, some writing and browsing/email/streaming.

The 2020 Air should be good for all that.

I just bought a new 12.9” 5th gen Pro for £850. The same spec for an M2 from Apple is £1350. They’ve lost the plot entirely. Electronics sales are going to plummet everywhere outside of California.
That's a good price - where did you source that?

I’m the same just media consumption and some browsing and note taking.

I won’t be using it for any pro tasks at all.

With such simple uses, consider Amazon tablets for a fraction of Apple pricing. Media consumption, web browsing and note taking do not require the Apple premium. Latest 10.1" Fire HD tablet 64GB is about $190 as I write this... the refurb of the same is $85.

I'm an Apple guy in general, have an iPad Mini 6 myself and no fan of Android, but no need paying 2-3X more if those are the primary uses. None of them require walled garden access.

I already have an Amazon fire tablet but the issue with that is it struggles to run webex and other applications which I use for work.

Highly doubt so. iOS/iPadOS support is mostly tied to RAM.
They both have 4gb ram. The iPad with the A14 is getting longer support than the A12x. Sorry for the bad news. They won’t even stick an A12 in an Apple TV anymore.

After seeing the new iPads. This is probably the best option out there. It's basically brand new.
My only concern would be how many more iPadOS updates it will get in the future. I'm honestly surprised that iPadOS 16 still supports the first gen 12.9" iPad Pro with its A9X chip. While that may make this purchase seem promising, I would still purchase with the expectation that it may not get anymore updates two or three years from now.

2020 iPad is the one to go for budget. 6GB ram is plenty future resistant.
The 2018 with 4GB ram is not a superb experience is all. I have one ☺️
This. My 2018 iPad Pro is so laggy, scrolling is even choppy, I even feel bad selling it to someone for $300 and it’s the cellular model. Apple selling the WiFi only model for $469 is ludicrous.

$19 more than base iPad 10th gen for dual cameras, quad speakers, M1, pencil 2 support, and ProMotion is a no brainer!

edit : 2018 model so nevermind. Thought it was 2021
