Who uses this trade-in possibility?
You can get a lot more by selling your used phone yourself!

I don't get it that people complain about the high prices Apple charge and then let Apple rip them off by trading in their old devices.
This, 100%

I'm laughing at all of the people talking about scammers on Swappa. I've sold multiple phones on there with ZERO hassle and no scammers. Don't be an idiot and sell it to someone with no history on the site, same thing with eBay. It takes no effort at all. The people bitching about this probably buy their cars from Carmax and get ripped off.

These prices are a joke. I'm trading in a Galaxy S6 today to Verizon for $800, while Apple is offering $65. And while eBay is incredibly frustrating these days, I've done dozens of transactions on Swappa and it's always been straightforward.
I think you're leaving out a major part of the details. No company is going to give you $800 for a 6 year old device, UNLESS there are strings attached. Maybe they gave you $800 in credit as long as you signed up for a 5 year contract?

No thanks. I’m not interested in dealing with scammers on eBay or Swappa. Even locally, I wouldn’t recommend it for other reasons. Some of us like the peace of mind of trading in our devices, we’re not worried about making ‘top dollar’. It’s hassle free trading in, and if that means I take a cut in profit, I’m totally fine with that.

This exactly. Made the mistake of selling a high-dollar Samsung tablet on eBay a few years back. After I shipped it the buyer asked me if it had cellular connectivity. No, this model doesn't. As soon as the buyer gets it, they request a return since it's damaged (it wasn't). They dropped it, broke the corner and the display and eBay let them return it for a refund. It wasn't damaged in shipping (shipped in original box which was undamaged inside the larger box), they just bought the wrong thing. This is why I use Apple's trade-in program.

They're still offering more for my P4XL than Google is, themselves. So, it's still a win. Pretty bad when your direct competitor is more interested in getting your business, than your current OEM is in keeping it. ?
It depends on the 3rd party refurbisher/ reseller they have contracts with. Some might be better than others, as such Apple or an OEM can offer higher value. In my country, a 3rd party e-commerce offers higher trade in values for Samsung phones than Samsung themselves.

Trading with phobio requires you to basically trading a new never used phone to get the full value lolol any blemish will half the value in an instant.

Smart move by Apple. Now boost all of my Apple product trade ins, make me want to upgrade even more / sooner ????

Let's be honest for a moment, you did a "trade-in" in name only. What you actually got was a 2-3 year contract to Verizon structured in reverse. Any "bill credits" promotion is code for reverse contract

I don't think you can be scammed on swappa, both parties are protected. At least that has always been my experience. So, yeah, that part is laughable. However, there's an old saying, a bird in the hand is better than two in the bush. In other words, while you would most certainly make more off of swappa, you have no clue how long it may take. Whereas, Apple is always willing to take the trade in. Just depends on how well off you are, I suppose. If you have enough to purchase the new device while waiting on Swappa, sure. Otherwise, some people just want thw new device and don't want to wait or deal with 3rd parties.

That's an excuse and not a very good one. They offer less because they put their devices on sale almost immediately, effectively killing off it's resale value. Maybe if they weren't so concerned about making money hand over fist, they would offer to match their competitors price like other companies do, in other markets.

Depends on the person and their patience level and the particular model/make of phone they have.

purchasing used phones locally a buyer considers:
Make+model they personally prefer,
wear and tear (dings/dents/scratches, etc)
accessories included or not (not thet big of a deal with phones),
functionality - does the device work as intended and should or is it jailbroken etc that a buyer may/may not want.

Seller:
if seller has a unique phone but only has support in another country THAT could be a huge deal breaker resulting in loss potential buyers that know about that and thus end up as a trade in.

With trade in i do as follow, if i like to buy something new (iPhone iPad) i just look at the devices and then talk to the staff, and before i buy i take my old device out and show them for trade in (I never send it in!). if I'm not happy what they offer i asking for the supervisor and show him/her mostly i get a better deal.

In addition to the other issues brought up in other replies, some people also don't want to deal with taxes coming from sales. I've sold many things on ebay and FB marketplace, and the ebay fees can seem a bit much when you don't open a store. Then taxes, delay in payments..

I have an iPad I'm debating trading for Apple credit versus selling even though I'm certain I could get a little bit more with the Pencil and Leather Sleeve.
Taxes? Just sell it locally and don't report it.
