You must be a fool to think a company as big as Apple is not looking to share data about you where it make sense and benefits them -- particularly in getting partnerships to happen.

Yes, Apple sells hardware for the most part, but they are not a saintly company that fanboys will have you believe. They will share your data if it makes business sense for them. If this were Google or Facebook trying to set up a TV service and attempting to share viewership data, people will be all up in arms.

Even if this ends up costing more then Internet + TV from Comcast, I will gladly give my money to Apple just to stick to it Comcast. The report that Comcast was just stringing them along instead of working with them really pisses me off. I had the X1 system from Comcast and it is complete garbage. The UI/Experience is terrible. Their betting the farm on it being the next apple TV where you purchase movies and tv shows from it. Its a POS. I have an apple TV and love it. This service can't come fast enough. One point I want to make is that the real selling point for this will be about the experience. The ability of having one box that does it all.

But you'll still pay Comcast for internet access?

Of course they store it, the point is they don't sell it.

This fanboi is quick in changing his mind: "Apple does, has always and will store your data! In fact - OMG! - that's what I always wanted (but never knew about)!"

If they allow more than one person to watch at a time and DVR service, I will seriously consider it. They need to include NBC and The CW.

I only hope that we will be able to watch programs with no advertisement interruptions. If ads are inevitable then perhaps they could be before a program starts. Ideally a no advertisement option would be available.

Maybe they could offer a no ad option for a higher price?

Unfortunately, Comcast is my only option for internet. I don't know if you have Comcast or not, but every year I have to fight to be put in a better package because my bill goes up. In PA, there is really only FIOS if your lucky or Comcast. There is no other choice for the speed. I have extreme 150 and TV which is around $190 with taxes. With just Extreme 150 from Comcast my bill will be $114 plus Apple's TV service at $40 which totals $154. This is still cheaper, than what I currently have. I currently have no data caps. I plan to buy 4 new apple TV boxes when they roll out. I am currently testing out SlingTV, using an HD antenna. I plan on canceling Comcast's TV service this week and use Sling until Apple is ready. Sling TV is pretty good, but I can't pull in all the local channels from where I live. Apple will have the local channels plus the popular ones. Also, you can bet they will have all Disney network channels (ABC,ESPN, Disney Jr, Disney XD, History, Lifetime, A&E)

isn't the whole point of this to be add free, like Netflix? I don't mind the data sharing. this is different than say icloud data b/c it's not your personal data being shared. they are essentially acting as Neilson ratings but a larger pool.

I just cut the cable cord! So far so good can get all local hi def channels with new antenna. I have Apple TV with Netflix and Amazon Prime. I just miss HGTV, DIY, FOX News wish we could just pay for those. Anyway, saving $150 per month without cable is nice!

Please don't propagate this incorrect belief. People buy magazines and newspapers because of ads and coupons.

That's why fashion magazines market themselves as having 900 pages, with 850 pages in ads.

They see it as a catalogue worth paying money for. The advertising itself is the content.

I'm not sure about the States, maybe you're right and people there buy magazines and newspapers because of ads and coupons.

I base my opinion on other people from other parts of the world where some never have seen any coupon in any magazine or newspaper. Plus I mostly referred to daily newspapers, weekly magazines, business press, etc. Fashion magazines may be a different thing but still first point applies here.

Well, may have something to do with the fact that others only get .1 and apple gets .17. So in the grand scheme of things, they make more than the industry standard.

What an artist's deal with a label is is hardly apple's fault, and also doesn't change how much apple takes from that $.99

That's why people pay money to buy newspapers and magazines, because they WANT the useful ads.

I buy newspapers for, you know, the news. Is that weird?

Whatever, like many people round here obviously I'll sign up for any service Apple offer :p Fortunately it's never likely to hit the UK, so my wallet is safe for now.

So much of Apple's brand value and public perception is rooted in being trustworthy and great about not needlessly collecting, storing, or especially sharing too much of our data.

It would be a (costly) shame to tarnish Apple's reputation by sharing this data.

That would be fine with me. I fear that there is so much money in the ad business that content providers would be reluctant to go for that. Unfortunately ads have ruined TV, for me at least. Even Hulu Plus seems to have quite a few ads making it borderline unwatchable to me.

I would say it's not the norm. Actual reality and content seem to matter less now. It's quite hard to get news as opposed to opinionated news. Even university lecture rooms have ads. So much for critical thought.

First they took away Ping
I'm still bummed at that; I know it wasn't really taking off in the way they hoped, but being able to group stuff you like into a profile, and watch artists for new releases were really handy, I wish they'd put those features back, especially the latter one.

As for this data-sharing; personally I think it's fine if it's more in terms of metrics, i.e- X male viewers aged 21-30 watched your show from 7-8pm, that kind of stuff. It's more information than the cable companies get from a regular set-top box, and if users can rate things then it might actually be useful to shaping the content provided, rather than plain viewer numbers.

I guess other anonymised data might be okay, like information on what channels they're competing with and when, e.g- FX might be interested if most of their 7pm viewers were watching ABC beforehand.

Basically, as long as we're not talking about targeted advertising (beyond the show that the ads are for) then I'm fine with it. I think it'd also be nice if you could down-vote particularly bad ads; advertising companies need to know just how much people hate some of the stupid adverts they come up with.

This all said, really what I want is for television channels to die out; paying to stream or download content without ads is far superior, and there are some shows I just couldn't watch with ads having watched them without. But unfortunately until we ditch channel exclusivity we can't reach the golden age of just watching stuff (except by pirating it, funny that).

How do you have Amazon Prime on an Apple TV? I thought that wasn't possible--or, at least, part of the usual.
