Apple's Mac shipments grew 9 percent during the first quarter of 2026, according to estimated shipment data shared this week by IDC.

Apple's growth outpaced overall PC market growth of 2.5 percent thanks to the M5 MacBook Pro that was released late last year. Apple also refreshed the MacBook Air and the higher-end MacBook Pro models, but those were just recently updated and wouldn't have impacted the Q1 2026 numbers much.

Apple was the number four PC vendor in the world with 6.2 million Macs shipped, up from 5.7 million in the year-ago quarter. Lenovo, HP, and Dell were the top three PC vendors with 16.5, 12.1, and 10.3 million PCs shipped, respectively. Most vendors saw an increase in shipments during the quarter according to IDC, with the exception of HP.

Apple had a 9.5 percent share of the global PC market during the quarter, up from 8.9 percent in the first quarter of 2025.

According to IDC, growth during the quarter was fueled by concerns over rising component costs and new product introductions. Vendors that are able to secure access to memory will fare the best as PC shipments start to decline.

IDC counts traditional PCs like desktops, notebooks, and workstations in its numbers, but it does not include tablets like the iPad. IDC's information is only an estimate, and Apple no longer provides details on the specific number of devices that it sells each quarter.

Apple's next earnings report is set to take place on April 30.

I hate these types of misleading articles. They compare one manufacturer, Apple, to a hundred different vendors all bundled into a class of "Overall PC Market". Everyone is a computer manufacturer. How about comparing Apple to the number one "PC" manufacturer, Lenovo and put up a headline that Apple sold 63% less Macs than Lenovo sold PC's? How much did Lenovo sales go up or down? Didn't see that stat or even a link to the report.

While everyone here just loves to see Macs outselling PC's using some random metric, the fact is, the "Overall PC Market" sells magnitudes more units than Apple does.

EDIT: I see the link in the first sentence. Lenovo grew almost 9% and #5 Asus grew 17%.

The article clearly explains the metric in question - that the grown in Apple sales outpaced the average and even goes on to explain in detailed numbers how they are fourth behind Lenovo, HP and Dell.

They're comparing Apple to an entire PC market. Did you not understand what I wrote? You may not see it how I do or agree, and that's fine. Many PC manufacturers had great gains. To bundle in some that didn't isn't a fair comparison just to make Apple look good.

I think Apple is putting out an all around better product.
With the forced add ons on with many windows updates there a plenty of people looking for other options.
If Apple supported gaming more I’d be completely windows free.

Jeezus -- Apple can't even manage to put an OLED display in a laptop in 2026 and when they finally get around to it, the price will be well north of $2K.

Your point is valid if you are comparing manufacturing, but if you are more comparing the popularity of Windows vs MacOS then what they show in this article gives good insight.

I did my part buying a MBP and MBA in March to juice the Q1 numbers. C’mon everyone, break out those Apple Cards and let’s get Q2 growth into double digits, Tim is counting on us! 😉

“Traditional “ computers is the one segment where Apple still has a massive margin for growth. MacOs is a mere 14% ( more or less ) of this market. At one point , even Linux had a bigger share than the Mac . With the backlash against Windows11 and the Copilot-everywhere, a lot of people are looking for alternatives .

Also, you should be aware, that the numbers in the article are about shipments and not about anything sold. Did you skim the whole article or what?
