Windows Phone is actually a very nice OS. If it had better app support, it would probably hurt Android more that it would iOS.

This is what I don't get about MS. The real threat to them is Google, not Apple. Yet, they are marketing and advertising WP7 as an iPhone alternative, instead of an Android alternative.

What would be easier? Getting someone to switch away from their iPhone, or their Samsung Galaxy S#?

It's obviously the latter, because Samsung has very little brand loyalty.

Well....

It's funny you say that because NASA recently decided to switch to the metric system for all their measurements, and they plan on using the system to put a man on the moon by 2020.

"Display size has been one of the major features differentiating the iPhone from larger Android phones, and the increase in size may encourage a number of Android users to switch to Apple's platform."

Display size combined with iOS 8 being so open (compared to past iOS versions) may be very tempting to many. Installable third-party keyboards, for example, is a good example of the much-more-open iOS 8.

I have had 2 BIG complaints, which I have posted about on these forums, since the very 1st day I bought my iPad1

1: I can't have my own keyboard layout (mainly I want a row of numbers)
As you often need to have numbers as part of a password. I think you MUST have a number for the iTunes password for example.

2: You cannot set a different browser as a default browser, so I can use say Chrome or something else, but any time I hit a link, perhaps in a email, bloody safari loads up!

So, 5 years ish been waiting.........

Now I hear: You won't be able to use a 3rd party keyboard for entering a password on something, and as I understand you STILL can't set a default browser to be anything other than safari.

Please make me happy and tell me I'm wrong.

unfortunately you are right. especially about the 2nd f annoyance

Most ridiculous thing in the world.
Now the other thread;

Why are we not quoting worldwide figures, all this article does otherwise is attract rabid fanboys who say 'yeah, take that Samsung'.

I know right, because quoting worldwide figures so that rabid fanboys can say "yeah, take that Apple" obviously makes more sense. :roll eyes:

At the end of the day, Apple isn't competing "worldwide" and certainly not competing in the same target demographics as Samsung or "Android". In fact, the United States is the best comparison you can have between Apple's offering and Samsung or "Android" because it's probably the least price sensitive market. But even in the U.S., quoting overall market share is a ridiculous comparison since there is still a large portion of the overall market that Apple doesn't even compete in that Android does which is the sub $400 smartphone market.

So these numbers just prove how much more people prefer iPhones over Android phones based on the actual phones and OS themselves without the price factor involved.

A Toyota Camry is a nice car but that's not why they sell more of them than BMW's. And something like a Toyota Camry or less expensive in their line will always have more market share than Toyota's own Lexuses so comparing Toyota's combined sells of all their upmarket and downmarket cars to the BMW M3 (upmarket only) is downright stupid.

I just hope that Apple has something "revolutionary" to release as most of it's power-users are experiencing the waiting-game fatigue.

A ton of people will be happy with just a large display iPhone. That alone would boost iPhone sales a ton. People have been asking for this since 2011! (of course I understand many people like the 4 inch models, but they're only a part of the potential market).

Its like the Apple Vs. Microsoft war all over again.

Apple better step up its game. As long as it is lower than 50% it will always be the OS to get knocked off.

The Macintosh was ALWAYS below 50%... well below actually. In 30 years... has the Mac ever had more than 10% market share at any given time?

Notice the Macintosh... that skinny pink line in the middle of the chart. Watch it over time:

The Macintosh had far less market share than Windows PCs... much less than 50%.

But I gotta ask... what's the result?

The iPhone once hit a high of about 20% smartphone market share a few years ago... which is also far less than your 50% benchmark.

Just like the PC market... other smartphone manufacturers sold more units collectively than Apple.

Again... what's the result?

I'm just trying to figure out what happens to a company or a platform when they don't have 50% market share.

Because from what I see... Apple has never had a majority share in either the PC market or the smartphone market.

Yet Apple's entries in both are vibrant and successful.

In Spain is like 6% or something like that I think :D:apple:

The only folks in Europe with iPhones were Americans and the occasional Brit or Australian.

Last time nasa tried to switch they slammed a probe into mars at rocket speed.

With extensions, continuity and what we already know is going to happen (faster A8, larger screen) I think power users should already be prepared for happiness.

Why do these type of market data posts inevitably bring out bad car analogies? Sigh

MR should institute fines for even using them. It's a indisputable fact this forum is the worst with car analogies.

I did...what am I looking for?

24 hour battery life is fine and who cares if you have to charge it every night.

Check out how the antenna breaks went from hideous to a nice design in the various iPhone 6 threads. For whatever reasons, the general consensus changed. I'm not accusing anyone of flip flopping, but the consensus always changes. :)

Its two groups of people saying two different things.

Consensus means general agreement. If we're missing a whole group of people its not a consensus.

Whatever you want to call it, the majority of posts will be 24 hr battery life is fine from here on in. This morning, most posts said it was terrible. When the Galaxy a Gear came out, it was called terrible in the majority of the posts here.

Market share is one of many metrics that companies can benchmark against. When people say that market share doesn't matter for Apple they are partially correct. Apple historically has not been concerned about how much market they control, they have been concerned about how much profit they make.

For years people kept beating the drum of "why don't you just lower your prices and you could get more market share?" To which Apple would respond, "because we make more profit selling fewer units at a higher price."

Now with the iPhone and iPad they may be considering different strategies, but my gut tells me that they will always be driven by how much money they make much more than how many units they pushed compared to any competitor.

If you really want to compare how Apple is doing compared to all other handset makers, go look at profit share of the market. While they are small world-wide in terms of market share (17%), they trounce in terms of the share of the profits that they reap (87%).

Again different people saying different things. Not sure what that proves other than different people are saying different things. Unless you'd like to clarify?
