Well, you won't be here anymore if the pace is like this, we only heard about those cars driving around in the states and a few other countries, this (walking) will take even much longer.
We all pay for it yet the U.S. gets it all while others are still waiting to get thing the U.S. had for years.
Apple, you should act like a global company.....
You get the finished product, we're the beta test.

OIt's just a matter of business decisions.
Same with Apple Pay. Takes them 5 years to half-assedly introduce it in a handful of countries. They could have had that much quicker by hiring people in each country to get things done. Instead, a guy responsible for a whole continent makes 1-2 calls per week to one of the remaining countries in no particular order.

I'd be worried on how much EM radiation those huge Lidar backpacks are emitting. What could possibly go wrong when you're using high powered radars encased in a backpack, inchies away from your brain...

Lidar ≠ Radar. It's just a spinning laser really.

EM Fields from the power supply maybe? Oh well, he'd better use a tinfoil hat then, right?

This is a monumental task when you think about it. Objectively, Apple should just let google continue to do all the hard work for a maps application. The fact that Apple is spending so much resources on this is indicative of a deeper concern with competing with Google, and I'm wondering if/when Apple will announce their own web search engine.

"Let Google do this." LOL. Apple realized years ago that mapping would be the key to so many future technologies that they had to control their own future. Google crystalized this vision when they deliberately sabotaged Google maps on Apple devices by withholding the crucial turn by turn directions feature, in retrospect a mammoth strategic error by Google as it accelerated Apple's own mapping effort which has been a massive blessing for Apple's future. (Most people don't realize Apple maps is by far the most used mapping app on iOS devices, used many billions of times a week, costing Google huge amounts of users and the related data.)

Folks also don't realize how long and how much effort Apple has invested in building out their own base map, now just starting to appear. Apple has spent billions and has many thousands of employees working on mapping.

And yet it will tell me to drive in the wrong direction only to make a uturn in the middle of the freaking street. Google has never been that stupid. I understand your logic, but I wonder if Apple maps will ever catch up to Google in terms of map data and apparently logic.

Meh...Google has done that to me more often than Apple Maps. I’m just glad that every time Google has told me to make illegal and dangerous u-turns or left turns, I knew it was wrong and ignored them.

The advantage Google has in these situations is that it owns the data and was/is able to make corrections quickly. Apple relied/relies on TomTom which would take up to a year in some cases (and in some, never...)

That has changed. I’ve noted in another Maps thread that every single correction I have submitted since July (most are minor to be fair) have been corrected/updated within 48 hours.

Apple’s use of Lidar alone will make it better than Google in so many ways. And as stated above, even if you use Google Maps on your iPhone, the travel data from your phone is automatically transferred to Apple Maps as a default (traffic data). This is why it has been proven again and again that Apple traffic/ETA data is more accurate than other mapping apps.

Maybe the backpack guy was just a hipster (jk) or Apple's decoy to mislead people about their plans (not kidding).

They don't want people relying on Google's services. I can see it being reasonable.

In the beginning Apple was far behind. I reluctantly had to stick with Google, but over the years AM steadily improved, and now I use it all over the US and it never lets me down. Indeed, when traveling I will often put them head to head to see how they compare and Apple is now generally slightly more accurate. That's been found in independent testing as well. Google is still better with its search locating places. Apple is also far superior as far as quality of Transit and the interface is nicer IMO. Most importantly, you have zero privacy with Google as they suck in every bit of data about where you drive, stop, etc., and link it to your Universal ID number, ugh!

I think you will see Apple pull farther ahead as they roll out their own base map starting this year. To date, Apple has had to rely on third parties, such as Tom Tom for data, which places Apple at their mercy as far as accuracy and especially updates. Having their own base map will also allow them to implement some great new features, such as a far superior "street view" that Google doesn't have with its clunky outdated street view.

It's a lengthy discussion. Could you provide the direct source of this details?

You are assuming they won't...but remember, they are creating a whole new mapping process/technology that goes WAY beyond sending out cars/people.

Once they have validated the new process works (it's pretty awesome from my experience in Northern California), mapping the rest of the world can be achieved at an accelerated pace with just the cars/people.

It's scary how many of you assume their slow pace to start the initial rollout has anything to do with the speed once the process has been proven. Apple remembers just as well as you do what happened when they tried to do things quickly with Maps before.
I still opt for the lack of business decisions than "perfecting technology" bias.

I report a change to Google Maps about mislabeled street nearby, it gets corrected within 48 hours.

I report a map-change-related report (not a POI) to Apple, they change it after 8640 hours or rather never.

It's not about technology, it's about not giving a crap about less-profitable markets.

And this is a shortsighted strategy which will cost them to lose even more market share and reach.

max 48h vs. 8640h or more

This is the real commitment here. And roads are the neverending story of updates.
It's a craft that never gets mastered.

This is just one article of many...

Just “Google” it ;)

Many people have done this comparison. I personally run all three when starting a long trip to test it. Apple wins every time....still amazes me as I always expect Google or Waze to be better when it comes to eta calculations.

And to the second part of your post...ummmm...read the article. Why would you link to TomTom?

From your article "All routes taken in San Francisco Bay Area" -- so it's just funny and completely irrelevant.

And you are from?

I forgot to tell, but I thought my posts were self-descriptive in this matter (Siri, Apple Pay Cash).

My problems with Apple is not their US-oriented working, but the International reach, to markets such as Poland, Slovenia, Ukraina.

Whereas in your US-bubble it may be a non-issue to use over another, using Apple Maps in Poland is a real indication and manifestation of Apple-fanboyism.

I plead guilty, I use Apple Maps even in Poland, but that leads to many compromises.

To the general lacks in maps dataset, there is no Siri, no Polish language, so additional inabilities to ask for Polish companies in directions, messed up voice which doesn't handle: śćążźćłówńśŁĄŚĆŻĄ well (sounds like an obvious foreigner), no transit data, no buses, no trams,

Those are deficiencies which Google handles perfectly, with a variety of Polish voices, male, female, celebrities.

The complete lack of understanding of Voivodeships (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voivodeships_of_Poland), Provinces, etc. which all not exactly counties as in the UK.

Google shows you a nice view of that area. What does Apple do? Some psychotic shid of pinpointing one pin (at random).

Apple Maps are completely unaware of map-related geographic terms and concepts here.

It's funny that you mentioned TomTom.

TomTom is awful but still 4x better than Apple Maps in Poland :)

TomTom releases 4 updates per year with full road (and water bodies) changes:

More here:

Whereas Apple leases every 4th release 6 months behind the current TomTom release.

Yeah, so if you're saying TomTom is bad, then think about the fact that TomTom is 4 times more up-to-date than Apple Maps in Poland.

I guess that is why Apple gives you a choice.

I think the important point around these articles is that all things being equal, what map app is the best and/or has the most potential?

Apple is a hardware company. Yes, it would be great if Maps was just as good in Poland as it is in Northern California, but it is unlikely that will ever happen...maybe it will. It obviously doesn’t stop people (like you) from buying an iPhone over the hundreds of other options out there.

I think the argument for most outside the USA is whether or not they should expect Maps be just as good in their country simply because Apple sells phones there.

Plenty argue that it should, but it obviously isn’t so important for them to NOT buy an iPhone. Again...there’s always a choice.

But they do make improvements.

It's not like Germany won't EVER receive the Apple Maps update.

It's about the fact that they do happen but much much much later. (If they are to happen eventually, why wait ; )

And yes, poor Apple Maps doesn't scare us away from iPhones. After all, we can still install many other apps, including Google Maps, right ; )

PS There was also a second post to you a bit earlier ; )

Do you mean the TomTom comment?

I'm not sure how often they update in the USA. Maps has been pretty bad updating...until recently. Update requests (minor) are happening within 48 hours here. Major road changes (at least in my area) have been updated in Maps. Not sure if that is due to Apple vans or just a coincidence from TomTom.
