what I wish map apps would do if you have the space is save offline any area you select directions for and delete it after a week or month. Then you don’t have to plan ahead if the place has internet or not.

How do you download a map? I am on the dev beta and don't see an option to do it.

Nevermind, found it. Click on your Apple Icon at the top then download maps.

I see it only offers towns. Wish I could do an entire state as I never know where I am going to be without a cell signal, which unfortunately happens more than I want. :)
Tap the image of your profile it is in there

Slowly slowly catching up with Google Maps. This is a very welcome addition.

I really want to just use Apple Maps, but sadly I still find myself having to revert to Google Maps almost daily. Sadly just far too many mistakes, missing things, or out of date things. Mostly with businesses (names, locations, opening hours, info, etc).

This is in the UK. London, Cardiff (both capital cities) and rural areas around them.

Ability to save locations to folders and now the ability to download offline maps. It's official, I no longer need Google Maps :D
Been living mostly without Google Maps for a few years now. Apple Maps is excellent for navigation, driving and transit directions.

But I still have to load up Google Maps occasionally to look up points of interest that Apple Maps still hasn't caught up on. I wish Apple would acquire or build a really good, current database of destinations, attractions, etc. Google still has much more up to date and complete POI information.

I agree it wold be nice if you could download an entire state or Canadian Province. HERE We Go Maps offers that feature. I use that as a backup when I don't have cell coverage.

I may miss something but isn't Google Maps just more reliable and better than Apple Maps ? New features are welcomed and competition is a good thing, but why using Apple Maps? Is there a relevant feature only on this app ?

This is a big deal. But I’m still keeping Here WeGo installed, as I have the whole of the UK downloaded for those tricky moments in the wild where there is no phone signal.

Another feature I had on my iPhone 3G in 2009 with Navigon. What's old is new again.

What's next, a Home button at the bottom of iPhone 15? 😂
Cool. We have all had access to offline maps on the iPhone for quite a while. X app doesn’t matter - does it, when talking about Y app? My point is that it’s not a new iPhone feature, merely a feature of a certain app. Being high and mighty doesn’t really work in this case.

Wow, so how many years you guess until I can flag files and books to never ever delete from the device? 5? 10?

If you zoom out, you can get an entire state (or most of a state, depending on which state) in one downloaded map. Probably can’t fit a whole Canadian province though, except for the smaller ones.

But you can download multiple maps. You could place them side-by-side and probably cover as much area as you want (unless there’s a limit, I wouldn’t know).

Apple Maps has better integration with other Apple apps, so really it's mainly about the "ecosystem". Apple Maps looks nice and the 3D features are pretty good, but Google still often shows more details (including many hiking trails that Apple Maps doesn't show). For that reason I'll probably still prefer Google.

Finally…something I’ve been able to do for over 8 years with Google Maps.

Hope that offline maps will then also work in tunnels correctly and not any more erratically trying to find the right way due to lost GPS signal. Btw, competitors can this since a very long time.

Any developer who could try and confirm that?

I’m using it right now on the iPhone XS, so I can confirm it works on all iPhones supported by iOS 17!

It definitely is buggy though- can’t adjust the size/range of the maps, and it just force quit on me. Glad to have the feature as someone with a very small data plan.
Remember to toggle on only use offline maps. Otherwise it will keep grabbing fresh maps like before from the server.

It's a dilemma I have with lots of app types - mail, calendar, weather, maps, browser etc. I always prefer to use the built in app just on the basis of elegant simplicity - if iOS comes with an app installed that does all that I want then why go to the hassle of downloading a third party app to replace an app that is already installed?

Right now from the list I gave it is only maps and weather where I feel the need to use a third-party app instead of the ones that come with iOS. For Weather that's because for the places I visit I find the Apple weather data to be very inaccurate and for Maps it's because I run my phone in dark mode but Apple's Maps app always follows the theme of the device and I hate trying to use a map in dark mode. If Apple would implement the modes/themes in Maps better - give options for "light", "dark" or "follow system setting" - then I would give it another try but until that happens I'm sticking with Google Maps.
