You still cant compare it to Google Maps. I use Apple Maps, BUT most of these new features are not going to be world wide for a LONG time if ever for some people. I love these new features but I dont live in the US so its no point in me getting excited about them. This is typical Apple of recent years, they announce great new fancy features that are available to a VERY small portion of the world. ECG for Apple Watch!! NFC when it was first announced was not usable in Australia for a few phones after the first release.
I’m betting IOS14 will be out before we get these Apple Maps features in a lot of the world.

I have personally steered clear of Apple Maps as at the beginning it wasn't accurate.

I am thinking about giving it another go as I'd like to distance myself from Google as much as possible....

What's your honest opinion of Apple Maps vs Google Maps?

My honest opinion is that it's better at directing me when factoring in one-way streets in cities, I see no noticeable differences when navigating normal roads, and I like how in-my-face lane guidance is when I'm somewhere I don't drive frequently. I much prefer it to Google Maps in the Northeast and lower Ontario because of that. Oddly, Waze provides me with identical directions to Apple Maps, rather than matching what Google provides.

I do understand that Maps in the U.S. is pretty good. I was in Montreal last year and it did give me some problems at a highway intersection that was under large construction. As such I will probably keep Google Maps for when traveling abroad. I had kept it around for Street View but with Apple’s new Look Around feature coming out I’ll only be referencing Google’s app when I travel outside the country.

I was in Scotland and England in Aug last year and used Apple maps exclusively. I used in both maps mode and transit mode. I found it to be extremely accurate. Never had a problem finding out where I was and how to get to where I wanted to go. Both in Edinburg, Oxford and surrounding area and in London.
Transit was Excellent. I used it extensively. Every time I left the hotel I had maps open and my route in it. Worked great on the tube and especially great on buses. As buses do not always stop at each bus stop (only if people waiting or getting off). And if you are not familiar with an area the bus could go right by your stop. Apple transit solved that. I was able to follow right along the route in real time and could see when my stop was next and able to signal for a stop there.

I have found it to be as accurate or even more accurate in areas than Google Maps.

It seems like only Apple maps errors get covered. But Google maps has a lot of inaccuracy's also.

What a pity that it will probably take years to have it available in countries outside of North America. I wish Apple would introduce a search engine while they are at it.

And it took years for Google to implement it also. They did not just say we are going to do street view and then had all that info the next day.
And they still do not have full coverage. Even though a lot of people say they do. For example look at the US. If you are zoomed out it looks like all of the US is covered. But if you zoom in, especially in the North Eastern states, and the Midwestern states you you see a lot of areas that only have the Main Streets of a town or small city with street view. And a lot of area without.

I prefer Apple Maps to Google Maps. Here in Chicago, I don't notice any difference in accuracy and I far prefer the Apple Maps interface. I suppose that might be different if I lived in an area that hadn't been mapped so thoroughly, but I so far haven't had any complaints about Apple Maps when traveling, either.

Like you, I steered clear for a while, though. I switched to Apple Maps about a year ago, after I had heard through the grapevine that Apple had been working to correct for the many early deficiencies.

How about offline maps? That would be an awesome feature for Apple to implement into Maps. Maybe they will in the future.....

Good point. That is a solid Google feature that's still missing from Maps.

I know this is kind of parallel to the current conversation, but will this compete with Waze?

I really like Waze (especially the auto-recalculate when it finds a faster route and the “Police Ahead” warnings of course) but I really dislike the fact that Google gets so much info from it.

Apple gets traffic data from Waze and combines it with what they crowd-source directly out of their app. That's nice and all... but I agree... Police Reported Ahead; and Construction Ahead... those are awesome to hear called out. :)

First and foremost unmet need for maps: Bathroom finder. As a parent with kids in need on a drive, I need to be able to find a bathroom friendly location without feeling guilty that I'm sneaking into a restaurant to satisfy a need that every human has on a long drive. This is the elephant in the room that gets near zero mention in digital maps. If we can share favorite locations now, perhaps some genius will now be able to share a compiled list of bathroom friendly locations in such a list nation wide. This would be much more useful than business names displayed in Look Around view.

Also, hopefully Apple maps will make their street names a bit more prominent the way that Google maps does. Currently we have to zoom and search for the needed name. Annoying and unsafe to do while driving.

. Another thing I really like is Apple maps tells you the weather and air index right on it, then also tells you what the speed limit is where you’re exactly at. This is nice because looking at the maps for directions, I miss speed signs and then guess what I should be going but now I always know the speed I should be going; which I think has saved me from tickets.

I'd like it if Apple Maps would always show speed limits when driving, not just when doing active directions. I often fire up Waze instead, just for that feature. Apple's speed limit also lacks the "you're going too fast" warning and the display of your own speed. Seems redundant, but having to glance only at one location instead of two for speed and limit is very helpful.

I'm curious how they plan to keep Look Around updated and current.
Same way google does. They keep driving their cars around.

I really think Apple should open its Apple Maps for other platforms, I really feel this is something that can mutually benefits the consumer and Apple. The more people use the service, that better it will be.

Maybe I am missing something as I am an android user (Google Pixel) can some please explain to me how Apple maps is even a competitor to Google Maps (civil discussion please). Last time I checked Apple maps was very basic and did not have a lot of features (i.e. AR view, message businesses etc)

Your handle, your previous posts, your start date all scream something else.

In any regard, perhaps you should familiarize yourself with the definition of competitor:

Definition of competitor:

: one that competes: such as
a : rival a fierce competitor on the soccer field
b : one selling or buying goods or services in the same market as another

The "b" definition above is the answer you are looking for.

Here's one on compete:
com·pete | \ kəm-ˈpēt

competed; competing
Definition of compete

intransitive verb
: to strive consciously or unconsciously for an objective

What's your honest opinion of Apple Maps vs Google Maps?

Google spies on you, first of all. The Stretview is nice, but I've always found its pictures to be less that helpful. If you're looking for an address, you click and end up with a blurry overshoot. You're a block past where you're going to. Yes, it does a good job finding out where to go, but since I use Apple Maps -- I'm in L.A., so there's no problem with coverage. When I first tried Google Maps to drive with, the very first try, it insisted that I turn off at an exit on a busy freeway that was closed. So, I thought, back to Apple Maps. I realize Google does a better job overall, but every one of them makes mistakes. For some reason, it announced left turns when I was near the intersection and not in the right lane. Siri alerts you to get in the correct lane for the upcoming turn. (Limited use of Google Maps, I admit.)

Now if this demo of Apple's 'Streetviews" is correct, it's a big improvement over none, and over Google as well. The movements are smooth, not a blurry rush. In the demo it stops at the right place, and the existence of the name over the restaurant makes a big difference. And if when you click on the restaurant's name, you get a Yelp! description, as you do now, that's a great feature. Google is still ahead, but they ruin a lot of their advantage by their continuous spying.

What does Google have to do with anything? And why would Google owning Waze be stated when the whole world already knows that and I never said they didn't?

And a link to what claim? That Waze sells services? That Apple purchases services from a litany of providers to compile data into their map? That no one single map provider uses only in-house data for their maps?

Yes.

http://gspa21.ls.apple.com/html/attribution.html

That's the full list of who they get data from for their map.

What an insanely bad reply...

You sure about this, like I don't think Google would allow this. I could be wrong though.

Waze is independently operated with its own executive board and the ability to enter its own contracts... and sells its data and services to many providers... including to cities/municipalities; along with a company named Esri.

Your link didn’t prove that Apple still uses (did use) Waze for crowd source data.
It just shows Waze 2012 which is the oldest date listed compared to other vendors.
Morevover since that time Apple has won it’s own patent for crowd source data.
Apple wins patent for crowd-source traffic navigation
Not making a claim that Apple is not using Waze for crowd sourcing, nor making a claim that they are using their patent for such.
From the link you provided and the link I provided no definite proof of either can be shown.

Know what the coolest thing is? When Google bought them, all 100 employees they had at the time got paid an average of $1.2 million each for what they held in stock options... and as part of Google's drive to retain the employees, were owed another payout sometime around last year (though I can't track down those specifics)

"Look around" is huge for me. I use street view every time I'm going to a destination I'm not familiar with.

Thanks

2012 Apple & Waze
2013 Google buys Waxe
2014 Apple gets crowd-sourced traffic navigation patent

Can anything be inferred from this, no.

My link doesn't need to prove that... just an understanding of what Waze is and is not would lead you to the answer now that you know the 2 companies are in a business relationship.

Their data set is real-time road and traffic data. They are not a mapping company. They are a Big Data company... that's what Google bought. They didn't need a map or turn by turn directions, they bought data.

I don’t understand why Apple doesn’t seriously throw resources at rolling this out. This new street view feature is plainly a much better implementation than google, but google already has images almost everywhere. It will take a lot less time for google to copy this implementation than it will take Apple to get imagery in most locations like google already has.

They are throwing recourses at it. The technology behind Look Around is completely different than Street View from what I can tell. Google can’t just copy this overnight. They would have to go back to the drawing board, design a car with 3D mapping tech and start driving the roads from scratch all over again. This takes time, as a reference it took Apple 4 years to get here.

Apple has 2 different types of vehicles, LIDAR and imagery vehicles. Google only has imagery vehicles from what I can tell.

How’s Apple maps in Southern California? I’m particularly interested in the San Diego area. I know they rolled out new maps for California recently but I’m just curious if they are better.

Look Around! I’ve been harping on this for the longest time. The street view data Apple was collecting was insane and combined with Flyover, this is gonna hands down be the best map ever. The amount of detail is next level.

Free-axis 3d modeled navigation will always beat out 2d pics. So proud of Apple for implementing this correctly.

Apple Maps is a hidden gem.

I just watched this part of the keynote last night and it was really impressive when she moved down the street with look around.
