By time they catch up Google will be another 10 years ahead of them 😂. It is impossible for Apple Maps to catch up to Google, they have been doing it before the iPhone was even invented 😂 (since 2005)
Yes, but there will come a time when Google’s going further, texture mapping every curb in every city, and accurately placing light poles and wires, where Apple Maps will be where Google is today. And, where Google is today, some folks say, is good!

I don't know if you have used Google Maps on a Pixel or any Android, but you can literally point your camera in a direction while walking to see where you need to go, Apple has about 6 years to add that feature.

Also, you don't have to worry about it being rolled out to specific cities like Apple does 😂

I think you're referring to walking directions with a sort of AR overlay.

Google Maps for iPhone has had this for years (I remember using it to find a Christmas party for work in 2018 when the world was more normal).

It's not compelling (as most AR stuff). You hold the phone in front of you as you walk, which is obnoxious (obnoxious feeling holding your arm out with the phone in front of you--I don't care if people think I look like a weirdo, so not obnoxious in that regard), and it's not really safe to walk around like that.

I don't think Apple will release something like that for the phone. It's not a good experience (as an aside, the only Apple AR specific app I am aware of is the measuring tool---AR Kit is used throughout the system, such as in Safari and Notes, but actual AR experiences from Apple? Nada. I think Apple realizes AR on the phone is not what they'd hoped it would be. Developers certainly realized it---they've had many years with AR kit and there are no killer AR apps, except maybe Pokemon Go, but that was released before AR Kit).

But if the AR walking direction overlay is a feature is exciting to folks, you can bet it will be in Apple Glasses and will be better than anything you can get in a Google Maps product.

Yeah, but… if you get to a corner where, prior to getting ot that corner, you were supposed to turn right and, getting to that corner you don’t know which way right is… then yeah, it’s good that Google has that accessibility feature!

I was amused to see the view of CNN was taken soon after a riot had smashed the windows, with plywood & fencing still in place.

Is it mistaken?

checked Georgia and found no look around.

also, checked again Justin ‘s page and said only Atlanta, no Georgia!

For what it’s worth, I live about 45 minutes from downtown and they have it in my area, so it does seem they at least covered a pretty large area around Atlanta.

We've had this in Chicago for awhile now. Apple's implementation is just prettier than Google's.
Agreed, Apple’s implementation is better than Google’s. Smoother transitions and scrolling, and better quality photos. Apple just needs to roll it out to more locations faster.

They already caught them in my book. Google Maps has a few more features, but the experience is better on Apple Maps. I haven’t even installed Google Maps since I bought my iPhone 12 Pro Max. Don’t miss it. It had become very cluttered and clunky.

This is taking way too long to catch up to google street with. Just TWENTY cities WORLDWIDE??? 🤦🏻‍♂️
not to play the devils advocate here but I think in reality it’s quite a bit more than 20 cities, for example: here in Ireland while it says Dublin is the only location, the town I live in in the middle of the country has it available as well, while it seems southern part of the country was still missing last I checked. So while it’s slow they’re clearly not stopping and I’d say if you’re living close to one of these cities you might get your luck. But I agree as long as it’s not there like practically on every corner it will be hard for people to chose first.

Apple Maps is a joke. All the resources that apple has and they can’t even get Apple Maps to be close to Google. Apple should copy from Google how to make a good app

Let’s be honest. Some parts of the world aren’t really worthy of a “look around”. For those areas you can use satellite view. If you really care to get down to the gritty street view there, you can get an Android phone with Google Maps. As a bonus you’ll also get green text messaging to let others know God has handed you the short end of the stick.

I’ve just discovered that Apple seems to remove people from the imagery for certain locations. Like “gone”. Look at Compton , California for example. Although you see a lot of cars on the street they seem to remove people from sidewalks etc. Or maybe people just can’t walk on the street there anymore? Anyway it looks a lot cleaner than when I took a tour in an armored bus a few years back.

Doesn't google just blur people out (faces)? I guess removing people is an easier solution. Like you said, also cleaner.

You said: Smoother transitions and scrolling

Nailed it. Much smoother, sort of like how Safari is just smoother than Chrome on a Mac or iPhone.

I wonder what the update frequency is for locations previously visited? Will day wait until they’ve done the entire world and then start all over again? Or are already mapped locations included in a semi regular update cycle like Google does?

My assumption is that it’s a continuous effort. One team may be doing the arial mapping on their own schedule, the drivers drive, but on a different schedule, and a group that verifies/validates map issues and ALL of them may further be on a regional timetable. The larger the region, the larger the “cycle”.
