Nice, keep on chugging Apple, was able to make it my default map choice a couple of years ago and its good to see they're expanding that type of update out to other countries and not stopping. What a project this all is (saying that for any map platform).

It's getting better, but Google Maps are still better and more complete though. Hopefully Apple Maps will get on par with Google Maps some day.
Yes, the feeling of Big Google vacuuming up my soul is so much better

Just checked it, still can't handle simple, common typos, still doesn't assume that a road you're looking for is in the same city as you are (finds another road with the same name in some random small town). Hell, it won't even assume that what you're looking for is on the same continent (I will often get results in random Chinese towns).

This was the case 10 years ago. It's still the case.

Maybe in another 10-20 years I'll check back to see if they've made it useable, good luck to Apple with that!

I love that you can delete the app from your iPhone though, best feature.

Exactly, same issues for years, now with more appealing visuals.
- in middle and eastern Europe it is useless
- 90% of POIs missing in comparison to Google Maps
- road updates are 2-3 years behind
- I really tried to use it and sent tons of corrections and updates, it takes months, till it is added, if at all
- constructions and road work missing most of the time, if I use the reporting, next day they are gone again
- missing reviews of places
- can delete the app at least, but no chance to set anything else as default, only if you change the basic apps as well
- still no speed limit and actual speed, missing in Google Maps for Hungary as well, though in the Android version it has been added years before
- it tries to search for anything in the most stupid way, like baryon wrote, results from China, searching for a street and the first result is 200 km away, though the street exists in my city as well

This is some ideological stuff and while I understand your view, I was talking purely about how Apple Maps performs compared to Google Maps. And it objectively performs worse.

Google Maps have meaningful reviews, working traffic information (incl. static radar database), it's more updated. There are addresses and POIs which you can't find on Apple Maps yet you find them on Google Maps. Also fuzzy search works better on Google maps (you can have typo in you address search).

It's not that I love Google. Their product is objectively better now. And I added that I hope Apple Maps will get on par in the future. So I don't get your "angry" reaction to my post.

I’ve given it a try. Installed it, started with adding my home address (why it needs to have it in my card in contacts?!), after 10 minutes Maps still can’t take it from my contact list (it’s there), it works for work though. Having problems with such top1 feature I’m afraid how it works for more difficult tasks. Dear Apple you have my attention for a minute for this app and fail again.

Poland is now “more green” with many parks, forests and lawns shown. There are building heights and some extra details.

But around a big city where I live there are still so many errors in the most basic data… There are no streets that were opened in 2014, motorway is shows as a small street, many minor driveways and private service roads are shown as they were actual streets.

It is difficult to trust it. If they don’t create robust local mapping team, who will be responsive to user input then they will never create a useful product.
Errors are one thing but satelite imagery is dark trash. see yourself in comparison to local map app. Not talking about level of info maps provide, but that something I do not expect from Apple. \\but such map imagery I would throw from table.

Edit- I thought dark images are only here but I see they are dark everywhere. Bummer

I don’t think it will for obvious reasons. At least not outside the US. Both feed from their user base and Google’s will always be infinitely larger unless Apple’s user base overtakes Android.
Their option is a gated community of Apple users which are a minority outside the US and the way maps software inherently works will keep Apple’s version worse.

Nothing apart from 2 hospitals around me are on Apple Maps when all businesses are on Google’s with accurate open/close hours. Apple will always be much better at UX and UI but could never compensate for their business model where they will never be truly good at anything that depends on large amounts of user input worldwide. Google is open for everyone including iPhone users and that’s why it’s the default. But that’s just my opinion.

In Switzerland, Apple Maps is incomplete. Google Maps is more up to date and much more accurate. Apple's list of public transport is so sparse that it can not be relied upon at all.

There's no "close" when it comes to maps; they're either accurate and useful (Google) or inaccurate and useless (Apple).

Great, it now shows a rendering of a ferris wheel in some countries, but still doesn't show all the actual roads.

Streets missing is surprising. Is it a lot or just some very specific, possibly very newly built ones?
New Switzerland Maps were rolled out few months ago in just Dec 2022 - so I would expect it to be much better since then. Have you checked it again since then?

No I haven't. I just did a quick check and it still doesn't show the bus to the airport at a stop near me, whereas Google Maps does. It wasn't missing lots of streets, just not showing a small number, or more frequently not showing them when I type in the street name and am searching for it. Quite a few small streets are either not named or are but for some reason don't show up when searching. Also, searching for business names often doesn't find anything, or starts listing companies in a different continent first.

I don't drive, but cycle lots and Google Maps shows cycle routes better. Or at least it used to. You're right; I should give it another go.

I enjoy using Apple Maps, but if Apple is looking to save money, surely they could close the division and work out a plan to work with Google again - AM still has such a long way to go as far as accuracy and features.
Ah yes, the good ole days when Maps didn’t even have turn-by-turn navigation because Google deliberately blocked it to give Android an advantage. Apple should definitely go back to being held captive by a competitor.

The only reason Google doesn’t continue to block features from iOS is because they now have competition.
