Some people say here that Apple maps lacks of data and its not complete yet.
Apple released siri as a beta and they even announced it but with apple maps it's not the same.

is apple counting on google at the moment to support others that can't use apple maps (US is not the entire world) until they can come up with something ?

The data is absolutely flat out terrible. Major towns are miles away from where they should be, and searching for any business that isn't a restaurant is entirely pointless.

We have to hope that third party app makers will start including links out to Google's app as well as the maps API.

You didn't hear this from me, but the new maps on the GM 6 version is really good. It is most definitely different than google maps but I won't say either is better than the other - different. The final build has good warnings for construction, closed roads and the turn by turn has been working much better than any of the apps I've been using, even before the final build.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by Apple's in-house maps development. I know I am and I was a strong supporter of Google's mapping app.

All these features might be available in your country but still not possible for our country(India) or mostly you can say Asia. Forget the turn by turn directions, live traffic updates or whatever the new features they have added I am not even able to get the normal directions. Directions is just a basic feature. And now I will have to carry 2 iPhones with me one for directions and the other for all other stuffs. I am still hoping that they will add directions in final release. I have owned all the iPhone models. Now if I go for iPhone 5 now what am I going to tell my parents that even the normal directions are not possible in India.

Apple Maps works fine for me here in Germany. Since we didn't have a lot of Google maps features here anyway there is almost nothing lost.
If you feel that something is missing from the core mapping solution try to add it to Yelp or the OSM Project.

Becuase you're calling it "Petrol" silly! Geez, call it gas!
:p

but its not gas, thats what i use in the central heating :p

Seriously though it is weird, apple can't have a direct link to yelp so all i can think of is they import it in some way because even service station brings up the right petrol stations on yelp but not on siri. *Shrugs*

I'm sure it'll keep improving though, rome wasn't built in a day, lol

Aren't the maps coming from tomtoms maps?

Yes they are and they are enhanced by the data from Open Street Maps for mapping as well as Yelp and several others for businesses. So they should be a lot better than TomToms offering.

BTW This means Qype.com should be dead soon, right?

Maybe I'm in the minority, but I never used the maps app on the iphone to lookup business etc. I always used yelp, or whatever other app I was looking for things in, then hit the get directions link to the mapping app. As long as the maps app in ios 6 can give me directions, show me maps, and account for traffic for alternate routes, ill be happy.

I'll stick with what I said earlier - the new Maps is different than Google and I'm happy with how it functions. I was like you, using Yelp or just searching the web for businesses, but now the direct connection to Yelp on Maps makes going to Yelp first not necessary. I've also done a little bit of testing with auto re-routing and it's about standard for dealing with the missed turn or changed route on the fly.

Questions regarding searching POIs: (I'm still on IOS 5)

How well does it work to use the excellent yellow pages app (which takes voice search), and then click on a located destination address in YP. Doesn't that take you right to maps and instantly give you the ability to get turn by turn to that place?

Similarly if you search using google in safari, and find an address, can you click on that going straight to apple's maps?

Pete
