Examples? I don't recall that happening. Somebody out there certainly looked forward to it unquestioningly, maybe even somebody with an audience (not, I think, Gruber, who constantly points out Apple challenges and pitfalls) but was such advance praise widespread enough to actually affect public expectations? I recall only a sense of a big question mark. Apple tends to draw a certain pre-conceived narrative, and "drones" and "zealots" fit that, but do the facts?

im trying to find it in the daringfireball archive but its not so fun to navigate.

im pretty sure it was gruber but there was a blog post about how google was trying to steal apples thunder by hosting and announcing an event for google maps before apples (early june 2012)

here is one which he just reposts

John Paczkowski Confirms New iOS Maps App ★
John Paczkowski:

We’ve independently confirmed that this is indeed the case. Sources describe the new Maps app as a forthcoming tent-pole feature of iOS that will, in the words of one, “blow your head off.” I’m not quite sure what that means, and the source in question declined to elaborate, but it’s likely a reference to the photorealistic 3-D mapping tech Apple acquired when it purchased C3 Technologies.

i found this post. typical of him

Google Previews Improved 3D Map Imagery ★
Gee, I wonder why they previewed this now, rather than waiting until it actually shipped? It does look cool, though.

Which iOS 6 Features Work on Which Devices ★
Weird that the iPhone 3GS doesn’t get features like VIP List, Offline Reading List, or Shared Photo Stream. None of them seem the least bit performance constrained.

weird is that the strongest word he can think of?

i find gruber to be an intelligent and well connected individual but extremely biased which i find to be a negative in this industry. if its something negative about an apple competitor its impossible to miss it on his site with a little potshot from him but if its something negative about apple its easy to not notice it unless of course its one of his massive retorts. in the last few years i find him to have gotten much more hostile towards google especially.

his take on mail (since mavericks) having issues with gmail

he hasnt posted about the automatic ios7 download

This is the only thing regarding apple maps , I care about...

My hometown on Apple maps (400.000 citizens)

...and on google maps

If Maps gets Transit directions, I may consider using it. At the moment, it is entirely useless for me. No idea why this feature is so slow to come into existence.

Im in London UK and Apple maps are excellent for bisiness listing i find what im looking for first time every time.

Upper Street, London N1:
Metro Bar and Grill - closed at least 5 years ago
Subway - wrong location
Cop Copine - wrong location
Gill Wing Jewellery - wrong location
Raj Moni - closed at least 5 years ago (3 businesses in this location since Rajmoni)
Salvation Army - closed
Le Mercury - wrong location
The White Swan - wrong location
Kilis Kitchen - wrong location
Como3 - closed
De Beauvoir Deli - closed, wrong location
Sangria - closed, wrong location
Jessops - closed
Sangria - duplicate listing, also in wrong place, still closed
Tiger Lils - closed at least 10 years ago, in wrong location
Fat Face - wrong location
Gufaa - wrong location, closed 2 years ago
Lloyds TSB - wrong location
The Body shop - wrong location

When I say "wrong location" I mean significantly wrong, i.e. by a block or more.

And I haven't listed the many current businesses not shown on the map. I know Upper Street because I live nearby, but I don't know everywhere in London so well. That's why I used Google Maps if I'm looking for a business.

At least Apple's satellite imagery is much better than Google's in my area. I live in a relatively newly built residential area and while the Apple imagery actually looks more or less like it does today Google still shows it in a way it hasn't looked in probably 7 years. It does look strange with the present day streets being overlaid on a very outdated satellite image.

Then again, many nearby businesses listed on the map are either outdated or make no sense at all. For example, a nearby café might be listed as a business under its registered name and not as a café under its dba name which everyone knows.

I've never seen Apple correct any error I've reported. It's absurd. If they want a great (and viable) mapping product, they need to take action on community-sourced information.

This and similar quotes make me wonder why Apple doesn't hire an extra 1000 people to do nothing but update maps and respond to user corrections. They have the money and it would be good for the economy. Not to mention responsiveness to problems and corrections posted to Apple Maps would be great PR for Apple along with an elevated user experience

What are they waiting for? There's obviously a problem in this area.

I was hopping iOS 8 would be more exiting than one or two updates to maps....

You really think that's it? This is just a ****ing rumour man. Maps won't be the only thing getting more features.

Google Maps is better. Android is better.

Then why even comment on this article? Google Maps is better sure, but saying Android better? no. I enjoy Android more. Doesn't mean others will as well.

Unfortunately in Hungary Apple Maps is still unusable compared to Google Maps, iGO, and other navigation apps. I gave it a try last time and it brought me into a one-way street (against traffic, of course) in just 2 minutes. But yeah, luckily there are better options.

semantics.

google has nothing to do with apple releasing a lesser product. how do you even figure that?

Apple Maps was not a "lesser product" compared to what was there before.

And if you're going to complain about Google Maps not being on iOS6+, then the only person you can complain to is Google since they a) wouldn't let them improve the app with turn by turn directions and b) didn't have an option ready at launch.

apple maps was not a lesser product yet tim cook felt the need to apologize? he even suggested using the web version of google maps. seemingly tim cook did not share your view.

we the customers do our business with apple. and apple is the one that takes our money so its apples responsibility to keep the standard up and not let it drop

it was obvious that apples terms was more important to them than the quality they served to us paying customers. drop google and be independent but not at the expense of user experience.

is it a cool and exciting enough market for apple to constantly spend time on it.

iwork hasnt been the past for instance. apple sometimes wants to act pretty carefree and start from scratch but that creates an undependable product. i dont see them having the dedication of running something like office for decades.

Report here http://www.tomtom.com/mapshare/tools/ Apple maps based on TomTom maps. I have reported via Apple maps 100 times and nothing. Reported via TomTom, they verified and after two weeks it was on Apple maps

TomTom has my street name correct. Apple Maps has a wrong spelling so people using iPhones to get to my place get wrong directions. Have reported the problem two dozen times in the last two years and the name is still spelled wrong. The "report" button is a fake. The reports must go straight to trash I guess.

----------

Oh and how about bike routes?

And why not use the official logos for the subway and train station like Google does? The generic Apple Maps logo does not tell me what line or company this is.

You have an army of stay-at-home moms (or dads) out there that would probably love a little extra cash from working at their home computers (sounds like an ad for a scam). Have them verify and approve corrections for their own neighborhoods/towns.

Perhaps we need a coordinated Twitter plea @tim_cook to actually start looking at and approving our corrections provided via the Maps app Report a Problem button.

I don't doubt that Google Maps has plenty of errors, especially in other countries or in lesser traveled areas of the country. However, as someone who lives in NYC, and who has traveled to many cities over the past few years, Google Maps has never once led me astray. POIs are always accurate, almost ridiculously so. And transit directions are perfect as well, which is important to me since it's the main way I get around. If Apple Maps can one day fix all its shortcomings, I will consider it, but I don't see how it can work better than Google Maps for me at any point in the near future.

Is this now a comparable product to Google Maps App in the UK?
I will switch if it is on par

My whole town was 50 miles south of where Apple's Maps thought it was!

How do those [electric vehicle] "stations" work? Do you just, like, stick in your credit card and plug in like a regular gas pump, or what? I live in New Mexico. We ain't got that kinda stuff here. People kept ending up in the middle of nowhere with a dead battery. I have to do about a 180 mile roundtrip just to go to a decent movie theater. :)
Wow! 180 mile roundtrip for a decent movie theater? Then paying $10+ per ticket?

Electric vehicle charging stations typically use an RFID card or tag that you received from the company that operates the stations (e.g., Chargepoint, eVgo, Aerovironment, Blink, etc.). This ties into your credit card information for charging. For free stations, you still need the card for some unknown reason.

Here in the city, electric vehicles make sense. In New Mexico, it sounds like they don't. I typically drive around 6000 miles a year because everything's so close. That's how I can get away with having an electric car with ~80 miles of range in the city.
Google Maps is better. Android is better.
...at getting viruses! :D

I work in manhattan and apple maps works great for walking directions.. Not so much for driving and the subway is hit or miss too. but I do use google maps too for subway directions. They are a lifesaver because new Yorkers can be downright rude when asking for directions to locations lol.

Give us a few examples of "ridiculous" results you got from Apple Maps. Keep it real please.

I tried looking for a McDonalds and it directed me about 2 blocks away. Also, running a city wide search of a business brings up fewer results than with google. Google just has the internet map on lock. They have a huge database, their maps are more detailed and they've been doing it for years. It was a mistake for Apple to drop them.

----------

Glad to see the same people who don't use Apple Maps are still loudly complaining about them and being proven completely wrong.....

For the record, the "disaster" of Apple Maps at launch was an entirely blog driven sensationalised story. Those that actually USED them, know it was fine.

No thanks. I don't want to have to sign up for a terrible social network just to get directions......

Your in the minority as a person who doesn't have a YouTube account. Both are Google.

The problem with Apple's Maps isn't that they bit off more than they could chew, it's that they're not updating their database with all the corrections users submit (which in turn means users stop submitting them - what's the opposite of a virtuous circle?). It's like they don't get the core quality of maps - they have to have stuff in the right place.
