Strangely enough, Apple Maps has never done that type of what I would call "dangerous" directions...ever! Bad POI info, sure, but not in the past 2 years for me and was sporadic before that.
Apple maps navigation seem fine. The POIs are subpar, which makes me rely on google instead. I do go back to Apple maps to test the waters once in a while - the design is nice even if lacking many features that were on google. Every single time it fails to correctly find a POI which is almost always correct on google. Bad POIs isn’t a minor thing, finding stuff is probably most peoples number one use case for maps. I don’t have time to deal with two maps apps, so google it is.

I’m based in London, UK, which one would assume would be decently mapped.

You’d assume wrong...while always better in the USA than the rest of world, POI info improved 1,000% when Apple “flipped the switch” in CA and started testing their own data across the country (even before map/routing info was updated).

I would expect the difference will be night and day once Apple release the first section in the UK (if they don’t release the whole country at once).

Good for Iceland! Interesting since it's mostly bus-based, subject to significant seasonal route and timetable changes, and very useful given how many tourists go there. Iceland has a small population but millions of visitors (provided viruses and volcanoes are under control).
Actually, long-distance bus service in Iceland is surprisingly sparse.
