I removed and reinstalled Apple Maps and it cleared the problem for a few days but it’s since filled back up.

How can I reclaim the space?

Change the data usage/background refresh to "only when using the app" and quit the app until needed.

Thanks. That sounds like something I absolutely shouldn’t have to do but I’ll try it if the problem recreates itself. I removed it again and reinstalled it again. I’ll see if I can try to find out how/when the big data dump occurs or if it’s more gradual.
