If Apple introduce a Street View service, I would like it to be smooth-flowing, rather than the jerky photo by photo that Google's is.

This might be a good use of Force Touch. Just press harder to move forwards more quickly, rather than constantly tapping for each ten yards that you do with Google.

So how often does one drive down the same street again? 1 year, 3 years, 5 years?

Shlt changes very fast. I remember driving through PA when they redid one of the highways and moved it 1-2 miles from where it originally was. So as I'm driving down the new highway, my GPS in the car showed I was going over a body of water.

Surprised on-star didn't call me to ask if I was drowning.lol

Biggest news in all of this is the url "maps.apple.com". Web interface is coming. If it wasn't, there would be no need to have it redirect. I know the url has been that way for awhile, but this is as clear as it can get... advertising that link and driving it into people's brains.

Still think this is the biggest waste of money. Google has taken years to photomap the world, and are getting to the point where they are mapping under water and other exotic areas around the Earth. Even if Apple does a decent job or has some slight improvement to the service, what is the point? Apple only has 15% of the mobile market and even among those I am sure a lot still use Google's services for maps. Apple will not overtake the market just because their maps are improved with Street-view. So Apple is blowing hundreds of millions to create a mediocre clone of of an existing service for a smaller market, just because they don't like Google.

Sure, Apple is rich, but it wont be for long doing stuff like this.

No mention of any East Midlands coverage? Considering their UK distribution centre is here...

A step in the right direction but Google has been spending billions of dollars doing this for years. And they have crowd sourcing data from Wayze.

I'm thinking it will be 5-7 YEARS before we see any significant level of point-of-interest and mapping data & accuracy improvements similar to what we've come to expect with Google.

Based on the articles I've seen, Apple will start with a very, very, very limited deployment to the big cities or 'population centers' and the rest of us will have to wait the better part of a decade before our towns are updated.

It would be cool if they could incorporate this imagery into their 3D modeled maps so they don't look like a post apocalyptic wasteland. I would prefer that to street view, actually being able to get in close to the building and see it from all angles. The tech demos looked so cool, but when we finally got it in our hands it was crap.

They have a long, long, long way to go. It took Google over 10 years to get where it is now. Apple are only just starting to use the own data as currently they licence from TomTom. Even with the latest tech, I still think we are looking at least 7 years before it reaches Google Maps level and by then it will have been surpassed...

I'm surprised that anyone whose goal is to match/improve on Street View isn't compelled to quit whenever they pause for a minute and contemplate what they're up against.

Mercedes Vans are much nicer than those Dodge things.
Although this is the old version of the Mercedes Van Apple is using, the new one is much nicer.

No doubt the MB is going to be nicer, but that Caravan pic is like a 1980's model.

So have they stated to what extent they are 're-mapping' areas? I'm in Phoenix, and if they have covered the general metro area, it obviously has not made it into production yet as Maps totally f'd me up a couple of weeks ago in a simple residential area of Scottsdale.

Luckily for us, they don't stop to think what they're up against.

I suspect if Google thought about what they were up against when they started, we wouldn't have StreetView to begin with, and we won't have whatever new functionality Google is/are working on to improve on the current limitations of StreetView.

Here's to companies that don't stop to contemplate and then give up.

To be fair, it's a big job, not not an especially complex one, and scale is not something Apple, and particularly Tim Cook, have a problem with.

Am I unrightly nervous that Apple visiting a city to map is newsworthy? If they're going to attain what Google provides within five years time I think they need to pick up the pace 10 times.

Good for iOS users in UK. Now they can have the same good experiences that I've had with Apple Maps in the states.

It's been good news all the time for us in the UK. Google Maps has proven to be light years ahead of any other mapping service on the planet. There's nothing Apple can do to surpass the Google Maps experience. The best Apple can hope for is to improve the hapless in-house Mapping app.
