This is pretty ambitious of Apple and some competition is always nice to see. While Google is still far ahead with respect of Mapping, Apple has been pushing their google maps in other areas of their maps.

At this rate it would be ages to cover other countries.

I'm in India and i bought iPhone 6

LTE : non yet available
Apple Pay : Nowhere in sight
Apple Maps : Just photo of the globe, nothing else.

I'm hardly using half cost of the iPhone 6 in terms features.

Also, to mention i used iphone3G, iPhone3GS, iPhone4 all on 2G network as 3G network was not available. Everything is so delayed here in India.

I have some Indian friends, and I often feel sorry for them and their countrymen. So many fine and talented folks unable to reach their potential because of so many systemic issues. They were far ahead of China, but it seems in the last 15 years the Chinese have passed them by. (This is an unscientific impression that I have, so if I'm wrong, please don't be harsh.)

Serious comment though - doesn't the google van position their camera much higher than this apple van does? I would think that would provide a different (maybe even better) view than what may be produced by pictures from this van, since it captures a more aerial view point (seeing the street from afar).

Yeah, the setup is definitely very different. Will be interesting to see how it turns out.

At the same time a user might potentially want to have more of a human-eye level view so that what the user sees in Apple Maps would basically come as close as possible as what the user would actually see there when they are there.

They are probably not taking pictures and preparing a "Street View" replacement. The van may be there just for verifying exact locations and traffic patterns (one way streets, no left turns etc.).

Is anybody really using Streetview regularly?

Heck yeah. I use it to:

  • Check out parking spots before I go into New York City.
  • Preview intersections and exits (important up here).
  • See what storefronts look like (it's often surprising how hidden they are).
  • Check out neighborhoods when surfing for real estate.
  • Show my wife what her new doctor's office looks like.
  • Even read the parking signs ahead of time.

Its like watching an army of cars go out.

Everywhere u turn u'll see an these (I'm waiting to see one OUTSIDE the U.S), something tells me that's a long way off though.

A US company catering to US market first? What a wild concept!
Dick comment man. They sell their products as fully functioning in other countries and often for more than in the US. They are a global company with offices around the world.

It's a realistic comment. They are, but that doesn't mean they start out or first in the country where they are incorporated and already have inroads in as far as having partnerships, deals, and general connections and relationships already in place. Hardly new or surprising for pretty much any company at any time really.

This is interesting. Could be multiple things.

I heard that these vans are taking photos that will be used in Flyover. So you start looking down on a city, move into flyover but can get close enough to see shop fronts etc.

Remember when people actually thought these were self-driving vehicles?
Yeah, dumb. These are obviously remote controlled delivery vans with drones mounted on the roof to leap over any traffic problems. It won't be long before Apple announce they've invented both pizza and home delivery.

I used to use street view to verify if a business really is at said location. However I've noticed in recent years that so many businesses seem to open, close, and move more than they used to. Apple is going to have to continuously map things for this to be very useful. Once a year minimum, twice a year would be great. Does anyone know how often Google Maps updates their street view?

Your unscientific impression is pretty accurate.

Until the UI is in sync with the voice prompts, I've already turned on the street I'm told to before the map even displays the corner I'm supposed to turn at, I'm not using apple maps

Say a van in my neighborhood yesterday in Frankfort, IL. It'll be interesting to see what these street maps look like, with how the cameras are mounted.

Have seen the bing cars 3 times in Washington state in as many weeks and two days ago, saw a little SUV for TomTom. All of them I waved, stuck my hands out the window, etc. Haven't seen the apple van yet though :/
