Well the last bond move grossed $880m dollars, so this ain't going to come cheap for whoever wins.

My bigger concern is that by going straight to streaming, it just helps kill off movie theatres. They really could have done with a blockbuster like this released before Christmas....they are already on their knees.
I would love this, since I have no desire to visit a theater during Covid, but this would be a seismic shift in the industry and would kill off lots of movie theaters.
I think the rampant spread of Covid-19 has a lot more to do with killing movie theatre revenue here in the US than a Bond film going to streaming.

Cause —> effect.

I think the money Apple makes today would about cover that.

It’s going to be a number of years before we can return to any kind of “normal”. It’s refreshing to see movies being released for home as an option. Movie theaters should definitely not be opened especially as the northern hemisphere heads into the winter months and the industry needs to adapt.
Are you a virus expert to make such a statement? And as we are heading into winter and you are in Berlin, it may be wise for you to put a shirt on.

I don't think it suits Apple to buy MGM (for their film library) because of the politics of dealing with other films studios but they could on the back of buying the streaming rights to No Time To Die (NTTD) do a deal to stream all the Bond films to 'complete the collection'.

If Greyhound cost $70m and covered the cost of production plus a bit extra, then it's going to be starting bids north of $300m for No Time To Die, and I easily could see it going right past $500m if there's a bidding war with Netflix.

Once it reaches $750m that would surely be in the realms of a decent box office return for the Bond film if the marketing spend is reduced. Apple can afford it and they would hope to offset that against a marketing campaign for a new AppleTV box with which to view the film on.

Note that the free AppleTV+ deal seems to have been extended to February 2021, March 2021 seems like a good time to launch AppleTV mk6 and the NTTD has a current* release date of April 2 2021.

Imagine launching the new AppleTV hardware, and then declaring that you can watch the new film on that date if you subscribe to AppleTV+? Huge marketing noise right there and a $5 ticket price if you can watch from an existing device.

The latest Bond film is WOKE! They screened it several times after reshoots and the audience still did not like it! So that story on the Bond movie!

I would be happy with this. Already annoyed that we cannot see it till April 2021. Albeit, I understand why and such...

The opportunity cost though. The financing that would have been attained to make the movie continues to accrue interest.
Plus there are no guarantees that movie going will return back to the level it was in April 2021.
All that would contribute to a pretty big discount on the selling price. maybe just enough for the distributers to cut their losses.

it just helps kill off movie theatres.

I don't think we need to worry about the future of theaters. The space and equipment aren't going to go anywhere. They might layoff everyone, but as soon as people are comfortable returning to theaters, we'll see them bounce back pretty quickly.

Agreed. Really disappointing. Should have been straight to streaming. For once, the Nolan hype didn't deliver.
I saw Tenent in Dolby Cinema and couldn't hear half the dialogue as the sound mix was awful, too loud and buried lots of the exposition needed to understand the movie. I have heard of similar complaints from people who saw it in IMAX as well. Sort of like the Bane controversy in Nolan's Batman 3. Maybe it will be better at home if I can hear the dialogue. If not, at least I can turn on subtitles.

here's my theory:

bond movies usually reflect the times they're made in, right? so unless this one is about a global pandemic, it's going to already feel dated if it doesnt come out til next spring or summer...and if apple or netflix is offering half a billion bucks for it...might as well get it out there. PLUS, i know they want to reboot and find a new bond but they can't do that while this one is still unreleased. it'd be cart before the horse. so another reason to consider selling it on a streaming service in time for the holidays...and then in the spring, announce the new Bond and get started on a new movie...
