Are you a virus expert to make such a statement? And as we are heading into winter and you are in Berlin, it may be wise for you to put a shirt on.

actually I was. I was a field agent then head of a joint cyber task org with BND then worked with the WHO and CDC in the tri-state area on 2019nCoV during March-April after spending a week in Seoul with the South Korean government and the WHO before coming back stateside. I’m also Anglo American and I live between New York and Berlin.

any other questions?

Last weekend, I rented a movie theatre for myself, my wife and a few friends, to watch Tenet. It was wildly confusing, and the sound mix was so terrible that it was wildly difficult to hear what anyone was saying.

I don't regret it, we had fun, and things felt normal for 2.5 hours, but Tenet is nowhere near as good as previous Christopher Nolan films. It's no Inception, that's for sure.

I agree, it wasn't his best work. But still a decent film in my opinion, if only for the novel concept and great cinematography and action sequences.

I would guess they would have to pay close to $500 mil. For real.

way, way more.

So, Spectre grossed $881M worldwide against a $245M budget. Skyfall, before that, $1,109M against a $200M budget.

But that's with movie theaters open and all that.

"Close to" $500M just for rights? Based on what?

If Apple were buying this to stream to subscribers and have it exclusive to Apple TV then MGM would lose out on Blu-ray sales etc as well so you are correct, it would be WAY more than $500M for Apple to buy this film.

Not to mention the instant piracy of the film (in perfect quality) as with other streaming services and VOD. That and Apple TV+ isn’t available in every country the movie would be screened in.

The pandemic is accelerating what would have likely taken 5 to 10 years to accomplish in terms of changing consumer behavior.

I would argue that cinemas are quickly becoming the next video arcades. In the meanwhile, the more people shy away from crowded places such as movie theatres, the more opportunities streaming services will have to snap up movie titles for themselves, which will in turn get more people to sign up for their services while resulting in fewer people wanting to visit cinemas. Especially when you consider that the money spent on a single movie outing could easily pay for a year of TV+ or Disney+.

Which is what I don't understand. People will take the trouble to go all the way to a theatre to watch a movie, but baulk at the idea of paying for a month of TV+ and claim how they would rather just pirate the show instead?

About time. Apple should definitely go out of their way to try and snatch the rights to a blockbuster movie like 007 to prove Apple TV+ is worth subscribing to.

What I don’t understand is the competition from Netflix. Unlike Apple TV+ which still charges $1.99 per movie rental, Netflix does not charge extra. So how will Netflix make money if they do secure the rights to the new Bond movie?

It's probably as important to stop Apple getting it as it is for themselves.

I sure hope we don't kill off theatres. It will create a chain reaction and kill all other businesses. No more eating out before going to the movies. No more having a drink after the movies. No more public transportation, no more shopping before the movie showing..

well the story is out now... they were looking for $600 mil but for now apple and netflix refuse. for perspective apple payed $70 mil for tom hank's greyhound and has two upcoming movies they funded for $200 and $120 million respectively. i'm sure for the absolutely most shocking streaming first movie of all time, the end capper of daniel craig's bond career (a movie which would in non covid times make well over $1 billion worldwide at the box office) you would think apple would be willing to go double those other unproved movies and pay $400 mil. there is no question if bond was released exclusively to apple tv+ that nearly every adult in the nation and much of the world would finally fully become aware of the existence of apple tv+ as a service that is similar to netflix/hulu/disney and that has tremendous value.

This would obviously be a massive win for Apple TV+

Would they re-shoot every scene to involve James having an iPhone, tho? :p
With them using the theme in the iPhone launch I’m guessing they already were a part of the movie.

Okay, fine, here’s what Apple should do: pay Disney $1billion for exclusive streaming rights (6 months maybe?) for Black Widow. Feature-lock it so only paying subscriptions, not trial subs, can watch it. They’d get so many subscriptions, Disney’d get their theater-equivalent box office money, and fans would get the movie now instead of in six months or a year or whenever.

Disney market cap is around 240B? Apple should just buy a controlling interest for 150-200B and they’d get a lot more than a 6 month window for one movie. They could sell off the theme parks, or add really big genius bars in space mountain :)

I think that would be the point, for awareness of AppleTV+ as a streaming platform for quality product that you want to watch.

Getting into James Bond also has other points to discuss before closing the deal:

1. Tech sponsorship of the next James Bond's gadgets (remember Sony was heavily involved in Daniel Craig's Bond films). Remember that Apple aren't just selling streaming subscriptions - they are also selling hardware. And if it's not hardware that he's using - like phones, tablets or computers (or an in car OS?) - it's also selling the idea of AppleTV boxes that people could use to connect up to their existing TVs and watch these films.

2. Possible high budget prestige James Bond TV series (imagine a Bond Cinematic Universe with some other 00 officers doing missions with support from Moneypenny, Q, and M) - and Cameos from whoever takes up the new title role in due course. If Amazon are doing Lord of the Rings and Netflix have tons of 'original' content coming then Apple have to make a splash too.

3. A reason to have the James Bond back catalogue on AppleTV+ as part of the deal. Remember Apple aren't really making big noises about loading the service with ever more expensive to licence back catalogue stuff.

$600M.

On one hand, “write the check Tim!”

On the other hand, do we want Apple to be known as the company that killed the movie theater?

Broccoli’s Steamed: James Bond Producers Rejecting Apple Offer of $400 Million, Hold out for $600 Mil - showbiz411 10/24

Producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael Wilson learned from their respective father and stepfather, Albert “Cubby” Broccoli. The James Bond movies are invaluable investment and they won’t settle for anything in a deal.

EXCLUSIVELY I’m told the famed producing team has basically rejected a $400 million offer from Apple TV for the rights to Daniel Craig’s final film as Agent 007, “No Time to Die.”

The Broccoli’s, as they are known, will not take less than $600 million.

Apple’s offer is only for $400 million exclusive streaming window, worldwide rights.

Frankly, that’s ridiculous, and I think the Broccoli’s should be steamed. The movie will earn $1 billion easily from subscriptions. Everyone wants to see it. And Apple can do all kinds of branding for it with iPhone including ring tones and so on. Apple is a famous lowballer. The Broccolis are smart to wait and see what happens with the pandemic. Even if “No Time to Die” can’t be shown until June, the people will come in droves.

And so, we wait. This is no time to cave.

I guess this just begs the question that even if the pandemic is having a rebound currently, the content providers are becoming no longer desperate this late October using the final Daniel Craig Bond example. If Hollywood anticipates revenue should normalize by mid 2021, Apple will loose any discounted box office film grabs for streaming. We all know the studios prefer movie theater runs for max revenue.
