Yes, that's my issue.

Fair enough. As I said, I don't understand it, but I don't have to. Just realize that iPad 3 owners were upset for a very different reason. Imagine if the 5 had been discontinued, not even replaced with the 5c, just completely gone, and replaced by the 5s barely more than half a year after its launch! And imagine that the iPhone 5 never even performed that well to begin with (hence its quick replacement) because its internals weren't well suited for the more demanding Retina Display they stuck on it.

Think it's safe to say that this definitely puts the kibosh on any A5 devices (read: iPhone 4s and lower, iPad 3 and lower).

As is, my wife and I will need to go shopping for a new iPad as well, since we have both the iPad 2 and iPad 3, and I only use my 4s as an alarm clock and music player next to our bed.

BL.

That's good confirmation!

I suggest the iPad Air 2 at $299/$399 for 16GB/64GB ($100 off) depending on your storage needs. Best Buy had them on sale a couple of days ago, I'm sure they will again :)

Thanks for that. Good to have some clarity on that issue. Uncharacteristic of Apple to have that disconnect between the keynote and the website.

As do I. That's my current iPad, and to me, it's the new iPad 2 (which was my previous iPad). I see those two models as hitting the sweet spot for getting everything right (as of their respective releases, of course) and having the potential for great longevity.

Yep, you're absolutely right about those two iPads. I completely agree.

Coincidentally, both will be the longest-selling iPads.

The website has been updated earlier to reflect that other A5 devices are not part of it all either.

I have an iPad 2 still on 8.3 so I don't care for iOS10. The iPhone 4s already lagged after iOS7 and my iPad 2 stutters on iOS8. People even grateful for an update shouldn't since after two or three updates, performance takes a nosedive. The best software for any iOS device is the software it usually came with or the point dot update for it. That was the best optimization for it. Anything after two years of updating, expect a performance hit.

Apple models the new software on new hardware when they should model iOS on bare minimum hardware to make older devices last longer. But money talks with them and they want some from their customers after a few years. Software updating after 3-5 years is such an overrated thing people want like QHD and thinnest phone ever. Who really cares if iPhone 4s doesn't get iOS10 when it is practically terrible to use already on iOS9?

I don't really think that makes sense. Why make new hardware with better performance capabilities but then optimize your new software for older devices? Then the newer devices aren't using their full potential. It's like forcing everyone to run a slower race just so that the weaker runners aren't left behind.

I'm grateful for the support on the iPad 2. While on 9.3.3 it's not as fast as my 6s, it's perfectly usable. What android device circa 2011 is getting core o/s updates?

They're still on sale now. I just checked about half an hour ago.

It's an amazing deal. I just wish I upgraded my iPad mini 2 several months ago when I first saw them on sale. But I have my iPad mini 4 now. :D

I agree. If Apple doesn't offer OS updates to older hardware people complain about the lack of support. If they do offer updates but devices that are several generations old can't run the newer stuff as well, people accuse Apple of "planned obsolescence". You can't really have your cake and eat it too. If older devices can run newer software as well as the latest models, all that means is that you're wasting the potential of the new devices.

How do you guys feel about this? Personally, I think they should have dropped all A5 devices. It doesn't make any sense to keep the iPad 2, iPad mini, and iPod touch 5 but drop the iPhone 4s.

Now this means that the iPad 2 will have gotten 7 major iOS releases and support for 6.5 years (or 5 more versions than its predecessor).

So personally, you would rather drop additional devices from having the latest OS support? Why should they have dropped all A5 devices? Why does it not make any sense? You didn't provide any of this information to justify a reason for this thread to exist. It is pointless. Apple (I believe) aims to support as much as they can, within reason. I am glad you don't work for them.

The devices have been dropped already, the website simply didn't reflect the correct information and was already updated since then.

They did drop all A5/A5X devices; it would not have made sense because all A5 devices have 512MB of RAM, unlike A4 devices which had 256 or 512; sorry for not being specific in the first place; I would love to work for Apple, but now I guess I can't since you wouldn't be glad :p

That is correct, thank you :)

The third gen iPad had 1GB of RAM.

I don't understand your point then? You say it makes sense to drop all A5 devices because they have 512MB of RAM, but the third gen iPad has 1GB and it was dropped.
The iPad 3 wasn't dropped because of the amount of RAM, it was the lack of CPU power. The A5 and A5X are equals in terms of CPU processing power. Must have been too low to support iOS 10.
