People said the same thing about point and shoot cameras.

Er, they still do.

I just upgraded phones and won't do so again for two years, so it's fine with me if they want to upgrade the camera between now and then. I personally think the current camera works just fine so the next version will be a good one for me to skip.

The sensor used by Apple isn't the same model from 2012. It's a 8MP sensor not used by anyone else that I know of but technology-wise it's current with other high mega pixel sensors according to Chipworks. Thus it must be a custom version made by Sony for Apple specifically.

Really? I may be wrong - I had ready something on dpxreview that insinuated that 2012 year.
I stand corrected if so.

Now that this has come to light, watch Samsung introduce the same thing early summer. Seems like they have been beating Apple to the feature punch lately, though admittedly, whether they match up in quality may up for debate.

Makes me even more excited for the Note 5.

They sure love throwing around "DSLR quality", but the reason a DSLR takes such good photos has as much to do with the glass as the sensor. Unless they change the laws of physics, a pinkie nail-sized lens is never going to compete with a big, multi-element DSLR lens.

At best I think future phone cam sensors might be as good as today's DSLRs, but will consistently lag behind DSLRs of the equivalent generation.

Care to state which laws of physics you are referring to? Physics wise there surely is no reason as to why a small lens cannot have as good optic quality? (Not withstanding that a larger lens allows a larger sensor which allows larger pixels and more light gathering ability.

Is this guy serious? This is latest technology. When was the last time Apple stuck latest technology into one of their devices before it was widely accepted and used by other manufacturers? I'd love to see it, but fortunately or unfortunately Apple tends not to incorporate latest tech too soon. I'd say we'll see it in a Samsung device first.

The non-S models are always nice because they are a new design, but the S models seem to make the biggest jump from the previous generation.

Latest Gen PowerGPU cores, latest generation of CMOS fingerprint sensors, latest generation IPS panels in their screens, Latest generation of 5K display (so new that they had to make their own timer chip).

I'm not saying that Apple is first to everything, but to deny that they pioneer certain technologies is to deny reality. They just pick and choose which ones matter to them the most.

Whoever guessed it was wrong. Chipworks did a teardown on the iPhone 5S sensor last year and found it was a stacked CMOS sensor, which was new for 2013.

There is no other known 1/3" 8MP stacked CMOS sensor made by Sony so that's why I'm guessing it's a custom version specific for Apple.

There are no specs in this article other than a passing reference to Sony's recently announced sensor in the last sentence.

He just couldn't pass up the opportunity to make some negative comment about how terribly biased the posters at Macrumors are for Apple. The horror.

I doubt it. My take is they will balk tradition and jump right into an iPhone 7 lines with this new camera and an industrial design to cover a size from the iPhone 5 series up to the iPhone 6 plus.

Thus we can see a classic "small, medium and large" product offering. Sure the marketing types are having a fun with the a Thesaurus naming these anything but "iPhone 7; small, medium, large."

An intriguing idea - I like it! If so then it would be most impressive if they could fit the high end camera in every model, or at least the two larger sizes.

I have to LOL at all the misunderstanding about megapixels. People, just because more MPs usually are not implemented properly does not mean that more MPs are always a bad thing. It is possible to introduce more MPs in a way that maintains individual pixel size. File sizes are no problem since Apple can simply add an option to save downscaled photos to save space.

For those who believe 8MPs are enough, I urge you to look around online for smartphone comparison photos. The iPhone photos excell in many areas and remain among the most balanced of any smartphone, but they are woefully behind in image detail. The cool part is that since Apple have learned to squeeze so much performance out of an 8MP sensor, they will absolutely dominate once they migrate to 16 MPs or whatever they decide upon.

This news has me considering a better case to keep my 6+ pristine so I can sell it and buy a 6S+ when the time comes! :p

Good points. Apple usually prefer a targeted approach that prioritizes new tech for the most important features, contrary to the typical Android OEM method of packing a device with entirely with unrefined implementations of bleeding edge tech.

Another point to consider is that it was only in 2012 that Android captured a majority mobile device OS market share. 2-3 years is about the time frame we should expect for new product strategies to manifest in Apple's lineup. So we have competitive display sizes/quality at the two year mark, and at the 3 year mark Apple's new work on mobile cameras comes to fruition.

Exactly.

I'm constantly amazed by how many "techy" people don't seem to understand how the R&D pipeline works in the tech industry.

Queue the "I dont want more MP, I want IQ". posts.

Queue "ugh, we need more storage capacity then" posts.

I personally would like an Image Sensor close to the level of a DSLR, 10+mp with improved IQ, HDR, Aperture, etc. Would also love the options to shoot in a Low, Med, High level of JPG quality and un/compressed files too.

As a SLR camera user of some years JPEG photography does not interest me as too much detail is lost in compression and therefore I use raw files. I have an iPhone 6 plus and love it's abilities in HDR but unfortunately in very low light it does not even register. Unless this changes dramatically and I don't say it can't then the DSLR will rule for a long while

The S version next year is getting more interesting :
- potential quad core
- 2gb ram obviously
- now this camera upgrade

Oo yeah i'm gonna wait next year to upgrade my iphone 5.

Nice try Mr. Samsung employee.

Since when has Samsung ever invented anything useful?

Their chip manufacturing processes are some of the best in the world.

Same for display technology.

You need to understand that Samsung is a massive behind the scenes business aside from it's consumer facing brand.

Pshhh...You know the iPhone 7 is going to have a better camera than the 6s right? It'll be faster and have a better battery life too.
