And still true. Don't get me wrong. I am not saying that you cannot take great pictures with an iPhone even today. You can as well take great memory pictures. All is good. I am just saying that large sensor cameras have due to their physical size a better "quality" if you assume the same technology for producing the sensors is used. And I put quality in " " because I mean it purely from a technological standpoint and not from artistically one.

And they were right. Sure, point-and-shoots have gotten much better — but so have DSLRs.

I know nothing truly beats a larger sensor that can take in more light. But the goal is to get close enough to the point where you no longer need to lug the bigger frames unless you're doing something very professional or you just like old school tried and tested.

I'm going to hold out for the 3-lens iPhone

But 4 lenses (one at each corner) all protruding could give Barbie & Ken a great pool and Air Hockey table for the Barbie Dream Home.

What we really need is "thinner". That is always what is most important. Since the camera part seems to have a problem with thin, maybe it should go? And the battery is a big hog of internal space so if it could go too, Apple could really thin out the next iPhone. In fact, why not just move all of the internals OUTSIDE the future iPhone so that we can get the thinnest possible iPhone? ;)

That's just it. If Apple said "hey, this time we're making it 1mm thicker but you get a quad core processor and 21mp camera" there would be heaps of happier people.

Everything doesn't need to be thinner with each generation.

Okay for flat surfaces, but won't there be problems with parallax, confounding objects of differing distances and depths of focus/field? Especially close up?

The S version next year is getting more interesting :
- potential quad core
- 2gb ram obviously
- now this camera upgrade

Oo yeah i'm gonna wait next year to upgrade my iphone 5.

Yes it will be also be waterproof have two day battery life no bezels and sapphire screen and wireless charging. You heard it here first. :apple:

I think 4k video is right around the corner. There are already a few third party apps that allow the current iPhones to shoot 2k and 4k video. The 4k I don't think is quite there yet but the 2k even in the largest formats looks great from the iPhone 6.

An intriguing idea - I like it! If so then it would be most impressive if they could fit the high end camera in every model, or at least the two larger sizes.

...

For those who believe 8MPs are enough, I urge you to look around online for smartphone comparison photos.

While the Digital SLR business has been compromised by smartphones, the high end has actually done much better. One of the big things amongst hardcore camera buffs are "gigapixel integrated" cameras. Some of these have very large physical lenses and taking very detailed images on an array of CCDs aligned so just a few wavelengths are missed. Some of the best are there gigapixel city scape photos of enter skylines and you can zoom into seeing people in skyscrapers and drivers in streets.

I doubt it. My take is they will balk tradition and jump right into an iPhone 7 lines with this new camera and an industrial design to cover a size from the iPhone 5 series up to the iPhone 6 plus.

Thus we can see a classic "small, medium and large" product offering. Sure the marketing types are having a fun with the a Thesaurus naming these anything but "iPhone 7; small, medium, large."

Jeez I hope this is right. Whatever they call them, let's get 3 sizes next year so those of us that like the 4-in size can stay happy.

Just ordered a new full frame DSLR, perhaps I should cancel the order?

Not really, I cannot believe that a small camera sensor is going to get close to true DSLR photos as mentioned in the article. Perhaps in perfect, outdoor lighting, but inside a dark theater I doubt it will be even close.

Didn't Apple buy a company this year that was developing software that combined two lower mega pixel images to create a single higher mega pixel image?

With a small sensor like in the iPhone you will never end up with DSLR like picture quality. Simply matter of physics.

So who says cameras are governed my physics? Yes, DSLRs will have the advantage of good Japanese or German glass. But camera phones have the enormous advantage of having an app, a powerful processor and a graphics processor on board, plus signal processing chops too. Soon enough, pro cameras will have to evolve as well to match the tricks of smartphones.

I first got a single lens reflex when I was 14. It's been sitting in my closet for a long time. It's a relic.

this is going on the iPhone 7. no way something like this makes a S model phone. Sorry.

The S model is always the one with camera upgrades. But maybe they'll just skip to iPhone 7.

I wonder if it's a 3D camera to go with a 3D screen... probably not.

so can we expect to see wedding photographers packing iPhones at a job soon?

I think 8MP is plenty "big" enough. Just keep working to improve the quality of photo. Taking 21 MP photos with your phone...what good does that do? The vast majority of people just post pics to facebook or twitter anyways. Who needs 13, 21, or 40 MP photos. But we all want better quality photos.

They may use pixel doubling as they do on displays. Its use in cameras predates Apple's use of it in displays in several areas. For one thing it was a naive form of noise reduction. Some cameras allow for variable ISO settings. One way to combat the greater appearance of noise in the signal reconstruction was sampling 4 as one, then resampling at the intended resolution. This can also help with detail in really red and blue objects, as they have fewer allocated hardware sensors in a bayer array.

See... I don't think Apple will just give away Beats headphones with every iPhone. The cost would be too high.

it will probably just say "beats" on it but won't be a top end product although I think they will go wireless/bt. I really think they will inbed the brand into their products maybe even pull an hp and call their speakers in products beats

So when has Apple.

lol...too many comedians here.

You can thank the entire personal computer industry to Apple.

----------

Their chip manufacturing processes are some of the best in the world.

Same for display technology.

You need to understand that Samsung is a massive behind the scenes business aside from it's consumer facing brand.

Yet they can't actually invent new process technologies, and have to rely on IBM via Global Foundries to design their new processes.

Yeah, and I don't actually want 21 MP photos anyway. These phones have very limited space, and that level of MP means huge file sizes for each picture.

Well the video seemed cool. Instead of the Nokia method of 40+ MP to do zoom, you use 2 different types of lenses and combine the information in both in order to zoom. So, you get the zoom feature of those massive nokia phone cameras without the huge size.

This ranks right up there with the sapphire display and new apple tv rumor. Let's all get high on this speculation so we can be dashed against the rocks when it doesn't happen.
