Not surprising, though I feel we should describe it as an iPhone Plus sized OLED display iPhone.

Honestly, why are we moving to larger and larger screens that approach the size of the ipad Mini, which is purportedly being discontinued because "nobody wanted that size screen." Frankly, i am a big fan of larger screen because you can just do so much more. But i still need it to be portable. So, here's an idea: just buy the ipad Mini at a considerably smaller price, and add a calling app like skype, talkatone, or MagicApp. They work great.

Due to the new super widescreen aspect ratio, the 5'8-inch will be a taller version the iPhone 7 with more screen on top and bottom, and only next years 6'5-inch will be like the current Plus models with more screen at the top and bottom. If you are a long time Plus user and don't want the feeling of loss in screen size, don't go from the 5'5-inch to the narrower 5'8-inch. Wait a year, that would be my advice anyway.

Still a big difference in size from a 5.5” iPhone Plus to an iPad mini. Same with a potential 6.4” OLED iPhone in 2018 (it’ll physically be similar in size to the 5.5” Plus). Remember, the OLED phones have 2:1 aspect ratios while the iPads are 4:3.

Yeah, but what I want is an iPad mini that supports the Apple Pencil. I wouldn't care if Apple discontinues the mini in order to move its customers to a phablet-sized phone, as long as they give it Apple Pencil support, and don't penalize the customer if they don't use it as a phone. I sort of feel like the SE is headed that way to replace the iPod Touch. Theoretically the price could drop enough to make that a reality, so long as they don't penalize the customer for not using it as a phone.

Comparison to the S8 dimensions would make more sense than the larger note 8. The supposed dimensions for the iPhone 8 are 5.65" x 2.79" x .298" vs S8 5.86" x 2.68" x .31". So the S8 is ~1/5 of an inch longer than the iphone 8, which at the end of the day isn't that big of a deal.
But that 1/5 inch is about half the size of one of the chinss/forehead of an iphone 6/s/7 plus, and we all needed to hear how old fashioned it looked compared to a note 6/7, huge bezels, ridiculous, etc. And now 1/5 of an inch isn' t that big a deal.
Just like the speed of the soc.
The iphone 8 faster? It is fast enough on a s8, don' t need more speed, just 5 mm' s more bezel on a s8 /note 8 than an iphone 8, etc. Just lake that, fans of samsung , make it all seem not that big of a deal, now the iphone 8 is coming, while just a few months ago, all they were talking about is that octacore soc, and the smaller bezels.

While a few weeks remain until Apple is expected to unveil the so-called iPhone 8, widely rumored to be its first smartphone with an OLED display, the rumor mill has already turned its attention to next year.

South Korea's ETNews, citing unnamed industry sources, claims Apple is working with Samsung Display and its other suppliers on the development of next-generation OLED displays in 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch sizes.

The report said the displays are expected to be used in new iPhone models released in 2018, although Apple's plans could change.

With a nearly 6.5 inch display, the so-called iPhone 9 would have an even larger screen than the 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 8 introduced earlier this month. Meanwhile, the 5.85-inch version would likely be the same size as the iPhone 8.

With reduced bezels, the overall physical sizes of the 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch iPhones could be similar to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus respectively.

In May, South Korean publication The Bell reported that Apple was planning to launch new iPhones with 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch OLED displays next year, but ETNews claims development of the 5.28-inch size has been abandoned.

"This is because consumers have preferred to use a large screen, and technologies such as full-screen or bezel-less have been developed that can enlarge the display while keeping the overall size of the smartphone small," it said.

The bottom line here is a second source lending support to rumors of a 6.4-inch iPhone launching next year. It might seem early in the cycle, but iPhone 8 rumors first surfaced in March 2016, nearly a year and a half ago.

[doublepost=1507233289][/doublepost]Insert so many effin curse words because I'm so over phones getting bigger!!!!! I'm sorry but Tim Cook is an idiot doesn't keep/revise the 4" phone handset, because it's a perfect size!! I have the 6s and I have never gotten used to the size (like everyone insisted). As for what THIS ARTICLE states; if I wanted to carry an iPad I would, but I don't!! In fact, a lot of people don't. And to be clear, it's not a prices thing; I would pay MORE for a smaller "quality" smartphone... I simply REFUSE to buy a phone that looks like one I had in 2012. Perhaps THAT is why you had crappy sales, Tim Cook! Oh wait... perhaps that's why the iPhone 7's had crappy sales too!!

Ok... rant done. I just had to chime in to hopefully help the cause for smaller phones!
