This would be a welcome addition. Couldn't consider an iPhone with screen less than 5.5. The new 8 is too small considering the usage area is reduced.

Some people like larger phones!

We are oscillating between fitting all into one device and having two distinct devices, one with a large screen, one with a small screen.

For me, I personally have a small-screened phone (still using my iPhone 4 after many years) and an iPad Air (in addition to my trucks, the MacBook Pro and a Toshiba Satellite). For me, it works, and I like it. I actually prefer my smaller form factor phone (I typically keep it in my back pocket in a protective case). I would have to adjust my habits to move to a larger screened phone (I won't use the word upgrade because I don't see a bigger screen as an upgrade). I almost pulled the trigger on the SE, but for my usage needs, I didn't have to have the SE at the time. It's looking a lot nicer now, though!

In most cases, I could get by with one device instead of iPhone AND iPad, and if I ever actually replace my phone with a more modern smartphone that also has a larger screen, I will be curious to learn if my own preference will oscillate towards the all-in-one device or if I'd still prefer the flexibility of a larger iPad screen.

If you got this far, thanks for sticking with me!

I think this year the price will increase again for the iPhone 7S or whatever they call them, in preparation for next year. Even LG are charging an RRP of 900 euros for the new V30!! I think that's just a tiny bit more then the Note 8.
Apparently for the last year or so oled has actually become the cheaper technology between it and LCD, as it can be, effectively, 3D printed, whereas LCDs require discrete sheets to be made and bonded. So I guess if anything the edition should be the budget model ;)

Of course there is an iphone 9 rumor the day the date for the iphone 8 event is announced. Lol.

Next up: Nike is suing Adidas for copying their shoe sizes.
It is far more than just size, look at the actual design:
Bezel-less, Rounded Corners, Rectangular, No Physical Home Button, it appears that the edges of the screen are curved to some degree

Remember Apple sued Samsung because their phone was rectangular with rounded corners, I would say it is fair to flip the table on them.

Well that may not be the iPhone 8, I'd seriously advise you try it out before buying it if your thinking of one. It will be a stretch to do all these swipe gestures one handed on a much bigger screen then the 4.6" iPhone.
[doublepost=1504204333][/doublepost]Ah so let me guess... from next year Apple will make the new iPhone 8 the standard more and the plus one the big screen 6.4" model, so basically from next year Apple will straight up be RIPPING OFF SAMSUNGS RANGE of high end smartphones in terms of bezel free designs and screen sizes..

Great for iOS lovers, but this is Apple following Samsung if it happens, no innovation at all.
Exactly my point, Apple USED to be about innovation, but I think that stopped around iPhone 2 or so, then they just started copying features, either from the jailbreak community or from other manufacturers.

You are describing most phones on the market, all of them not manufactured by Samsung. The 8 has a notch digging in to the screen at the top and no infinity display spilling over its side, most Samsung fans are already making fun of it for being something Samsung would not design even on its worst day.

This is the phone I would want. Similar footprint to my current 7 plus but with the screen-to-body ratio/design of the upcoming 'iPhone 8' if that's what it's called. This year I feel like we're getting iPhone (4.7 in), iPhone Plus (5.5 in), iPhone Pro (5.85 in new design). Next year I could see them doing iPhone (4.7 in), iPhone Pro (5.85 or 6.4 inch new design). It'd be similar to how they're treating the iPad lineup. iPad (9.7), iPad Pro (10.5 or 12.9 inch). I think this year they want to keep the 5.5 'plus' model in the lineup because it seems like it may be simpler to focus on the one Pro model for the time being, then add the larger size later. I'm going to try my best to hold out for next year because my 7 Plus is fine, but I won't lie when they make that announcement on the 12th it's really up in the air on if I have the will power.

Next Year iPhone will be offered in two sizes: a 5.85-inch & 6.46-inch …...

just don't get it......Apple really going to make an other model with just 10% larger screen???

While a few weeks remain until Apple is expected to unveil the so-called iPhone 8, widely rumored to be its first smartphone with an OLED display, the rumor mill has already turned its attention to next year.

Samsung's Galaxy Note 8 next to iPhone mockup by Benjamin Geskin

South Korea's ETNews, citing unnamed industry sources, claims Apple is working with Samsung Display and its other suppliers on the development of next-generation OLED displays in 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch sizes.

The report said the displays are expected to be used in new iPhone models released in 2018, although Apple's plans could change.

With a nearly 6.5 inch display, the so-called iPhone 9 would have an even larger screen than the 6.3-inch Galaxy Note 8 introduced earlier this month. Meanwhile, the 5.85-inch version would likely be the same size as the iPhone 8.

With reduced bezels, the overall physical sizes of the 5.85-inch and 6.46-inch iPhones could be similar to the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus respectively.

In May, South Korean publication The Bell reported that Apple was planning to launch new iPhones with 5.28-inch and 6.46-inch OLED displays next year, but ETNews claims development of the 5.28-inch size has been abandoned.

"This is because consumers have preferred to use a large screen, and technologies such as full-screen or bezel-less have been developed that can enlarge the display while keeping the overall size of the smartphone small," it said.

The bottom line here is a second source lending support to rumors of a 6.4-inch iPhone launching next year. It might seem early in the cycle, but iPhone 8 rumors first surfaced in March 2016, nearly a year and a half ago.

I don't get all these tall skinny devices.
My iPhone 6 is unusable when trying to type an email in landscape. I thought Apple was supposed to be good at design.

this screen size diagonal talk is misleading though. we're all comparing in our minds with existing 16:9 screens. But with these new phones (both iphone and galaxy s8), they're now more like 18-18.5:9 aspect ratio. So a diagonal measurement of 5.5" sounds like an iphone 7+ but is more like a tall iphone 7. The width will be about the same so you won't get larger text or more content left to right.

YES!!! Finally, can't wait until next year. Now just add pencil support to it and I'll be happy.

I'm much more of a Samsung fan than an Apple fan most days. But Samsung's design is what should be made fun of IMO. Curved edges reduce functionality, distort what is on the screen, etc. Give me a flat screen ANY day of the week. I also prefer the notch at the top, Apple combined the status bar and top bezel into one maximizing space. IMO they leapfrogged Samsung in their top and bottom bezels, while almost eliminating the side ones. While I really like the Note 8, it's not something that excites me and I don't feel like it's a good design in many ways. Anyhow, just my personal opinion, this is the first year I've been excited for an iPhone in a long time.

Yep, that's why I always joke that next year Samsung will put out a 24" screen phone. Except it will be 12" x 2". I hope the narrow/tall thing is just a fad and we can get back to 16:9 soon.

This. A flat screen is more practical. I'm actually a big fan of the new iPhone design too, no matter how much Samsung fans make fun of it I think it's much less awkward than the elongated note 8. The protruding camera on the back, ok, I'll agree with them on that. :p

Comparison to the S8 dimensions would make more sense than the larger note 8. The supposed dimensions for the iPhone 8 are 5.65" x 2.79" x .298" vs S8 5.86" x 2.68" x .31". So the S8 is ~1/5 of an inch longer than the iphone 8, which at the end of the day isn't that big of a deal.

I don’t get the notch hate. It has a few benefits

- you need a bezel for the camera etc. Here you have a slim top bezel, but it doesn’t go all the way across, so it’s even less bezel.
- you’d need the status icons on the screen, but by moving them to the sides of the notch you free up more proper screen for apps etc
- the sides of the notch give you glimpses of the background so you get a tru edge to edge side to side *and* too to bottom. In particular looking at the lock screen

I actually even like the look of it. It gives the phone something distinctive.

I think you meant 18:9 and not 18:1.

If believe the dimensions put forward by Lazard below, the iPhone 8 will have a width of 2.79" (or 70.9 mm). The 5.5" iPhone 7 Plus screen has a width of 68.6 mm (4.7" iPhone 7: 58.8 mm). The iPhone 7 has a bezel of 4.1 mm and the iPhone 7 plus of 4.6 mm (on each side).

If we believe the bezel will be halved, the iPhone 8 will have a bezel of about 2.2 mm on each side. The actual screen width would thus be 66.5 mm, which is much closer to the iPhone 7 Plus size (68.6 mm) than to the iPhone 7 size (58.8 mm).

I'd like an iPhone 4 sized iPhone with an edge to edge screen, similarly in design to what is rumored for the iPhone X Edition 8 Superman.

In fact, I expect in 2018 three models:

1. An improved version of the iPhone X.
2. A new 4.7" (diagonal) phone that looks like a smaller version of the iPhone X--and in fact, will be only a little bigger than the iPhone SE.
3. A new 6.7" (diagonal) "phablet" phone based on iPhone X technology but physically close to the size of the iPhone 6 Plus/7 Plus.

All will have Touch ID fingerprint sensing built into the touchscreen itself.

Everywhere I've read about the new oled iPhone they mention a 4mm bezel. Like 4mm on both sides of the screen adding up to 8mm total. That's what I thought up until I saw your post honestly. I saw a photo of the Plus laying side by side with the 8 dummy model (white front), it did look to have about 7mm more screen width compared to the 8.

From a 9to5mac article;

For the rumored iPhone 8 specs, a 2x scaling would be nonsensical (a 1218×562 res would likely mean UI elements are far too small for comfortable interaction). At 3x, the numbers fit a lot better.

At 3x, the iPhone 8 main screen canvas would be equal to 812x375 points. Coincidentally (or more likely planned to be this way), the 375 point vertical resolution is identical to the current iPhone 7. This means application design on iPhone 8 will be roughly similar to that of the current 4.7-inch iPhone series, except with an additional 145 points worth of height to play with.
