A less expensive non-5G iPhone 12 works for me.

I see no personal benefit with 5G when the 25 Mbps I get with 4G LTE allows me to do everything I need.

My phone usage doesn't require super high speeds and latency. 5G is a nice to have feature.

The iPhone 12 pro max was going to be a day one purchase for me. I have money allocated for it since the last 6 months.
Now I’m not as sure, as like you said, it won’t be coming with USB-C. The other things are nice but you can still do without.
To be honest, just the addition of that would be worth it for me - I already have an MBP and an iPad Pro and I travel a lot (or used to).

You'd avoid the phone because it doesn't have USB-C? Carrying around this cable would be a deal breaker?

This would be the perfect SE version.... And My guess is that will cost $600... how I get that number. Easy. iPhone 12 will be the actual XR. and the 12 with no 5g will cost less than the XR

This all seems one hell of a mess. I'm going to sit out another year with my trusty X.
Our iPhone X’s are likely to get iOS 15, 16, 17, 18, 19 and 20. So, I’ll keep mine as long as possible. I’d rather buy the Apple stock now than a new iPhone. For what most of us do with a phone, there really isn’t a must have these days. Yes, there is the yearly camera improvements, but when you done uploading those images to social media, it still gonna be downgraded.

So which is gonna be the higher end model out of the basic 6.1” 5G being released this fall and the $800 6.1’ 4G released in February ?

I am not buying the story. If you want a 4G iPhone, iPhone 11 will likely still be in this year's line up.

Next year March is going to be a larger size iPhone SE. As Ming has been saying for years.

I'm all for having variants of different iPhones to suit people's needs, but I think data connectivity based on speed. I see a lot of confusion having 4g variants of iPhones when there are "older" 5g variants.

Hmm.. it seems that Apple can't release anything good this year. That's too bad. Maybe the 11 pro max is the way to go at this time. Maybe, we hope, it will be the last iPhone for good.

Something for all the folks worried about 5G radiation, this might have a nice niche.

I work with one of these people. I mean, I really like the guy otherwise. He's a nice fellow and seems pretty level headed.

Until he shows you the crystal he wears around his neck that he says can give him the ability to see the energy coming out of power sockets, and that 5G spreads the 'Rona. No it doesn't. It's the same frequencies as old UHF television. The MM wave spectrum really isn't read for prime time, and it sure isn't penetrating MY aluminum foil cap.

I'm going to spring for the 12pro with the 5G. For a couple of reasons. I like the return of the squared off design for one. I'm kinda nostalgic for it. Second, I'm a bit of a tinkerer. Been an Amateur radio guy since college and I like playing with the newest radio gadget and all.

Finally, this is how I intend to "treat" myself for being completely sober for 2 years in September. I may have to wait a while for the phone, but a new phone seems like a reasonable but rewarding way to do so, and my old phone is paid for (Xr). Considering I drank my face and my liver off for 20+ years, it's a bit of an accomplishment.

the iPhone 12 isn't sounding very appealing this year. Apparently there will be no 120Hz screen, smaller battery, no USB-C, no headphones, and no power brick. The costs are just too high to justify these impulse incremental updates anymore. Well I mean I COULD buy one, but its the equivalent of throwing over 1K away when I have a perfectly good iPhone 11 Pro.
That’s the case every year

Rocking iPhone XS Max here and really don’t feel the need to get a 5G iPhone. And since iPad does almost everything iPhone can do but better except making a phone call and less portable, I’m not going to shell out $1.5k (AUD) for an iPhone upgrade. I’m too old to buy into Apple’s bs marketing.

Word on the street is that you don’t have to get a new phone every year

If you have an iPhone 11 Pro, you’re really not the target market for the 12. Upgrading every year is kinda silly and wasteful.

Almost everyone is on the lease plan. They're sunk in it. They see no reason not to "upgrade for free".

Perhaps XR will remain on sale until this thing comes along to replace it. Seems like the most likely outcome of this launch, but I could be wrong. Certainly would be a nice option to have, but I wonder if they'd cripple it a bit to offset the possible gains of having less taxing modems. But, XR did have better battery life than the XS line so it's possible they won't.
I think the XR will be discontinued and the iPhone 11 will drop in price to $549 or $599.

You saved up to upgrade your phone and the charge cable is a dealbreaker? Yeesh, ok. I'm charging 90% of the time off a qi charger anyway, so the only time I use the lightning port is 1) to charge quickly in a pinch and/or with my portable battery or 2) when I plug in headphones. I agree it'll be nice when everything uses USB-C, but the connector I want killed way sooner is micro-USB, which somehow still seems to be built into a lot of things. Lightning is non-directional, compact and pretty benign by comparison.
