Do you not think the quality of music is good enough already. I did buy some headphones other than the free apple headphones you get with phone & they were the in ear type buds far superior quality for £40, funny though quality was a good once they'd been through the wash while on holiday but thats life. Oh well will have to wait & see my upgrades due next September, that's unless the apple upgrade programme is launched in the uk for a reasonable price.

If apple were planning to make the iphone get significant better battery I would be all for it. But somehow I suspect its only to make the phone thinner.

We don't need more adapters.
Yes we do need more adapters. They are the best way to make the transition from one port to another, without loosing compatibility to legacy accessories. The alternative to adapters is to incorporate the form of the old port in the shape of the new port. And that's never a good idea.

I say bring it on.

My 6 Plus is too heavy. Especially with a case. A thinner iPhone 7 Plus means a lighter phone.

With respect to battery life I expect the same as the current 6 Plus S however Apple will offer fast charging this time around.

I'd love to see Apple ditch the home button too.

The article says the iPod Touch is only 6.1mm while still retaining the headphone jack. Surely it's something else which is the reason it's still thicker?

or maybe removing the 3.5mm jack has nothing to do with making the iPhone thinner but it's related to something else. Something we won't know until the product is actually released. Even the iPod nano at sub-6mm has a 3.5mm headphone jack.

There is only problem I foresee with this article, most of these are speculation not factual. What do you do if you want listen to music & charge the phone at the same time. Also I not knocking Apple but there will be less choice of the style of headset that you can choose, I realise that at some point if this is the case other manufacturers will produce copy's or will you get the usual accessorie not supported if it's not genuine. Kind of hope this is speculation.

Apple's ultimate goal is for you to use Bluetooth headphones. As Bluetooth technology continues to improve, the need for wired headphones will diminish. If Apple goes through with this, it's clear they want to start the revolution of getting rid of headphone wires. You can be sure that they will offer Bluetooth Apple buds.

Personally, I am O.K. with this. I think wires on headphones need to die a short death. This reminds me a lot of Adobe Flash. Everyone moaned and bitched about the lack of Flash support, but now it's a moot point.

We don't know that for sure. That's speculation for now.

Until the shareholders revolt and hold the BOD responsible for the shift in Apple's design, nothing will happen. As long as their position is long and Apple stock holds, Apple will do what they darn well please, despite the fanboys, forums and general consumers.
However, I agree with most on this forum, the obsession with thin has gone way overboard. I think Ive has too much control and is continuing to show his 'prowess' with engineering. IMHO, Tim is not the CEO that is needed for future's sake. Whether some believe that 3.5 has seen it's days, it is still a very strong industry standard. The change many years ago from floppy to disc was, I believe, inevitable. This change, however, may have a backlash. Unless there is a tremendous email and writing campaign to the BOD, nothing will change.( I doubt many people will do so) The general population will just think that this is the 'way of the future' IMHO, I think it's a bad decision, if it takes place. Maybe Apple thinks getting rid of a 10 cent part will add more to the bottom line.

Well Apple does have a patent for reducing the thickness of the headphone jack, but I agree they wouldn't do this just to achieve thinness alone.

I predicted this since Apple released the Lightning audio standards last year, and then the Retina MacBook came out. There's only room for two ports on the rMB, and wasting one of them on a single purpose headphone jack when that notebook demands additional connectivity and versatility is "criminal". I fully expect the revised R-MacBook to include a lightning port, instead of a headphone port, which we now know can support USB 3 speeds, as well as power and any number of other functions. It gives something like a MacBook far more versatility while also serving a dedicated purpose, as all of Apple's wired headphones will connect via lightning.

IPhone 7 comes out with a set of Lightning earbuds, Retina MacBook also replaces the headphone jack with lightning soon thereafter. Followed by every new product update thereafter.

Do you wait until apple tells you to go poo poo? I guess you would slit your wrists if apple wasn't around to tell you what you need.

So I laugh at people whining about having to buy an adapter and I'm a sycophant? Mmkay! I find it hilarious that the same people who bitch about Apple updating connectors are the same people who can't wait to buy the latest iGadjet every year.

...or I'm guessing you still use an iPhone 3G?

I think the phone thickness is fine. The thinner it gets the more likely it is to slip out of my hands or shirt pockets. If losing the 3.5mm is a way towards waterproofing then I think I'd be ok. I use mostly bluetooth anyway. I just don't think doing away with it is going to make it more desirable.
Sony made waterproof phones that had a headphone jack without a port cover, so it isn't necessary for waterproofing.

I don't understand Ive's obsession with thinness when his own waistline keeps expanding.

They could do it technically. Though I suspect many people will just ship if they do. Having to use an adapter to use some quality headphones or existing headphones people own, no thanks.

Though this is a recycled story from last year. Too many of these stories just pop up every year, cheap hits I guess.

The panic that some of you go through when a rumor is announced that you don't agree with is hilarious. I mean one guy even used Neil Young's Pono, a completely insignificant product in the grand scheme of things, to illustrate their displeasure.

Apple doesn't care about supporting old standards of doing things to please internet commenters. If this happens you will all adapt and go on with your lives. Just like you adapted to the Lightning port, just like everyone is adapting to USB-C. And for those of you crying about switching to Android, go ahead...go cut off your nose to spite your face. Enjoy Android and the 3.5mm jack. The rest of us will choose adapt and move on and continue enjoying our iPhones.

But what will they do when Android inevitably gets rid of it as well?

The great thing is that since the 6S and 6S Plus are thicker than the 6 and 6 Plus, Apple can claim that the 7 is thinner than the 6S variant, and just make them the same thickness as the 6 series.

I really don't understand why phones keep getting thinner and thinner. It just seems like they'll be easier to break or slip out of your hand. I think the LG G2 is a great example of perfect thickness/contours on a phone. Oh well, that's what consumer choice is for, right??
