Oooo, chirping away like a well fed canary there.

At no point did I say they didn't make phones or money.

I said, if you read it carefully, it's sad that the media lead with the term phone maker instead of Mac manufacturer.

Why the hell would they lead with "Mac manufacturer"? The Mac lineup sells 1/10 to the iPhone and much less when taking into account iPad sales. Bless your heart for thinking otherwise, though!

As a shareholder I really don't see this as good news because competing with other content distributors over Sony or Paramount produced content doesn't seem like a sure shot to recurring revenue to me. It also concerns me that they are chasin a competitive crowd instead of the crowd chasing it. And the exclusive content Apple has chosen so far it really akin to warmed up McDonalds leftovers. It's not the kind of "smart" programs that Amazon, Netflix or any of the cable channels -- premium or standard -- have presented.

So far Apple has shown it cannot make a superior subscription product. It has a built-in user base of nearly 1 billion worldwide yet it only has a fraction of the music subscription market. It's not that Apple Music is terrible but maybe because it's unnecessary or Apple has not made its case. A few more TV series is not going to change that.

I can understand Apple's involvement with music. That's from ipod. Apple music should have a much higher % being baked into iOS.

But TV and video hasn't really been their thing besides offering up an overpriced itunes store and hobby apple tv.

If Apple hasn't learned their lesson by now after years of failed negotiations, then when? Go 4k. Offer something suitable and be done with it. You'd think online ads would have enormous potential but nope..Apple tried it, couldn't do it. Sometimes you have to just accept what is.

Back to basics. Profit margin on hardware based on good software and how it works together. There's an internet of things out there but Apple doesn't seem interested in other iOS things. In fact, they seem determined to scrap these things like monitors, routers, and the like. They have stores in key areas to sell these "things" in.

How about an Apple Mirrorless Camera? Sony should be the target there. A7RII. Great little camera but the UI really sucks on it. Get your C chip in it and do great things in connection with Macs and idevices, icloud, etc.

I still want a universal remote that's better than Harmony.

Printer. Dinosaur? Make it better.

Speakers. Get that W1 in there.

Don't let the likes of LG handle monitors for you. Get on that. Routers too.

Double down on software and getting back in good graces with creatives. Lose that and I say again, I don't like longterm. You have to answer MS with their touchscreen push to them. Apple needs to be essential somewhere in software.

USB C ports and nothing to attach. I want to buy crap with Apple logos on them that just works..

The man is heading Apple's biggest future money maker.
[doublepost=1488568343][/doublepost]

Everything Apple does is criticized. From AirPods to new MacBook Pro's to the latest version of macOS.

Apple isn't late to the streaming music party.

Eddy is heading the only growing category right now at Apple: Services

And frankly, that's going to be Apple's biggest money maker in the future.

iPhones, iPads & mac sales are slowing down (either in sales or in update cycles).

Apple was late to the streaming party and they should have recognized streaming music and video through a subscription was the future long before acquiring Beats. And a large part of the "services" growth is from App Store sales––something he doesn't head. Phil Schiller took over that division a couple years ago.

I don't think they were.
But lets say they were...

Apple has been late to everything. Your argument holds no water.
They didn't invent the pc. They didn't invent the mp3-player. They didn't invent the smartphone.
They didn't invent the tablet. They didn't invent the laptop. I could keep going but you get my drift.

They've been late for everything and it doesn't say anything about their competence or succes.

I do worry about this idea that people have that Apple can continue to survive as a services company with hardware second. I know iTunes is available on Windows and Apple Music is on the Google Play store, but how many people use those services who don't already own an iPhone and/or a Mac? For the Apple TV: same question. What is the boon to the person who is otherwise outside of the Apple ecosystem to use these services? To me, you disrupt the whole "it just works" ethos once half of the experience is built by someone else (full disclosure: I'v owned only Apple Computers or clones since 1984; Original Mac and Laser 128 --> Performa 630 --> PowerBook 5300c --> Power Mac G4 --> Mac Mini; iPhone 4 and 6, iPad 3 and iPad Mini).

As for Planet of the Apps, this is actually a great idea for a tv show… completely ruined with a random and nonsensical set of judges. Gwyneth Paltrow? Jessica Alba? will.i.am? This would be a pathetic list for 2008… these people have no currency with anyone making anything new and interesting in 2017.

Profits from the App Store are down? When did Apple report that?

Not down as in not profiting. They're taking a smaller cut hence their profit from the App store is relatively lower compared to before the announcement. Your point was that the App store is the main growth driver from Services.
That's not true. You should listen in on the earnings calls.

Either way my night of explaining ends now.

Hell will freeze over before that happens. Besides, if Netflix were for sale, Amazon would buy them. (Heck, Netflix is already hosted on AWS anyway...)

I think it will come down to either Disney or Apple buying Netflix. Netflix are just too far ahead for either Disney or Apple to catch up on their own.

I agree. Eddy is all about penny pinching. If Apple wants to be a part of this space, they will have to spend big and spend often like Netflix and Amazon are doing. Just look at all of the money Netflix has spent just in the last year signing all of the big name comedians like Jerry Seinfeld, Dave Chappelle, Chris Rock, Amy Schumer, Louis C.K, etc. Netflix has practically cornered the comedy market that HBO not too long ago used to dominate. If Apple doesn't get serious and jump in soon, it will be too late because Netflix and Amazon are being very aggressive in this space.

It won't be Cue. It will be Iovine.

Man this sounds like a disaster waiting to happen. Makes me wonder who is leaking this to the Post?

http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-looking-to-buy-tv-shows-and-studios-2017-3

As Apple executives are busying looking to do business in Hollywood, entertainment industry insiders are scratching their heads over who, exactly, is driving the effort.

“Robert Kondrk, Eddy Cue, Jimmy Iovine, everyone is trying to be the person,” one insider told The Post. “They each want to be the guy, and they’re telling people, don’t deal with the other one.”

What has he delivered on, in the last five years, that you would even remotely consider him to be a best executive?

He delivered on relinquishing control of the App Store to Phil Schiller. That counts doesn't it? ;)

Glad to see you're starting to see the picture... All jesting aside. this has been an on going issue within Apple since Jobs passed away. No one is taking definitive control, Tim Cook is not the guy, the same way Roger Goodell isn't for the NFL. Yes, they will make money, no they will not be closing the doors tomorrow, but it's a slow erosion.

Considering how much has been promised and how little has been accomplished with Apple TV I don't regard this as anything significant. Apple TV itself is no better, and perhaps not as good, as it's competitors, most of whom DO have some form of exclusive content contracts with major providers. There is nothing on Apple, as far as shows, movies or documentaries that you can't get on Roku or Firewire or PS4 and each of those devices have content not found on the others. The games available for Apple are competent but not ground breaking, and certainly only average in graphics. I own an Apple 4, and while I use it, it did not enable me to cut the cord, or even use it more than once or twice a week. If it could act as a server, including the ability to use downloaded content from iTunes, it would be more useful to me, as my internet speed varies and most of the 'gee whiz' features require that you stream the show/movie to use those features, and not play them from your downloaded library. Plex is available for Apple TV, but it can't easily access my iTunes movies/shows/songs.

A 'maybe someday we'll have unique and valuable content' isn't good news as far as I am concerned.

Eddy needs an early retirement. I don't know why he gets pegged as this great dealmaker. What great deals has he done post Jobs? Beats? No one could say that with a straight face.

Apple should focus on refreshing its underpowered, again desktop line before it focuses on original content that other companies do better. Oh and put in a decent GPU for once.

We all know when something is in trouble u gotta do it yourself to try and keep it afloat...

Similar to how crappy TV shows have well known guests stars or movies to try and make it good as a "oh look.. Jim Carry is in this" I wouldn't watch it otherwise, but i would if there is well known characters.

Its probably pretty different to not do original content or anything, and u don't know who any stars are . There always gonna be at least 1 probably.

Interesting that Mr Robot would be used the the images as Mr Robot's main character Elliot, is not a Steve Jobs fan.

Its reality, Steve Jobs did what he said in the above video. I find it unbelievable some hold him in such high regard when everyone around him seemed to recount the horrors of working under him. Guess people like their apl toys above everything else and see him as a Willy Wonka type.

Look at apl's profits what good is it? I think its telling that over 88% (and climbing) of people on Earth choose "other than Apl " on every product sector . That truth is apart from a smartwatch only useful solely to iphone owners who are on a mission to revive a dying sector. Its not just because of the cost either people choose other.

I feel bad for the TV sector having to deal with Apl. /smh

This is all good if they can manage being in so many industries. But we need better Macs.

???
Hell, they can't even do iTunes right. Just look at Roon, it smokes iTunes for exactly what iTunes was made for. Sometimes it seems that Apple is just fat, dumb and happy to be the largest tech company without realizing how much bigger they could be if they refreshed their products way more often like they used to do.

"Can't do iTunes right" ? The most successful and most profitable platform ever built in the history of tech is not "doing it right?"
[doublepost=1488598451][/doublepost]
Apple....focus on what you do best software and innovation. Which lately you're falling behind, don't go chasing rainbows.

Ha! Good one. Apple is "falling behind." LOL. What do you have for an encore?

Apple is no longer a computer company that sells content and an ecosystem, they are a content and ecosystem company that happens to make computers to work within it. While Macs may remain part of their focus they probably don't see them as the major growth area worthy of ongoing large R&D expenditures.

I'm not sure how much I actually "like" this, but I do agree with it, even if begrudgingly.

Computer companies don't have $250 billion of revenue while angling for a trillion dollar valuation. As a public company, if they are going to grow financially, that growth is going to come through content and services and less from the hardware/silicon themselves. The challenge is the balance of maintaining cutting-edge standards and great hardware/software/ecosystem along with the content. Last two years they've been negligent on the hardware part.

Eddy Cue...
Is often hated on for his keynote skills.
But I honestly think he is one of Apple's best executives.
True hustler.
I actually miss him in the keynotes.
Say what you want but these new presenters like the Apple Pay VP lack personality. It just feels so artificial.
Eddy always livened up the place.
Then what did he materialise from those extensive Keynote promises ?
Where's the content cool-factor he perpetually vibrates...?
Residing in Hollywood for 8 years, doing "business" in his network of 10k "prominents" , where is a single content deal ? Some say that Robert Kondrk, Jimmy Iovine are the real Apple negotiators now, as Eddy Cue has overplayed himself in Hollywood.
Why is Apple Music installed by default on a billion devices only attracting meagre percentages, with Spotify double the number of subscribers ?
All his coolness is pretention - did he ever log-in anywhere using his AppleTV remote - and what was his user-experience ?
What did he make from his AppStore responsibilities that he was removed from ?
As a Spotify user, using my AppleTV only for AirPlay and ignoring everything Beats/Iovine the best I can say is he wouldn't be missed. Why he deserves a stellar salary - I couldn't say.
Even his Mexican shirt promotions are simulation without any substance.
But you may nominate him for eternal Planet of the Apes-stardom.

I am not disagreeing with you, but how can Apple compare PotApps to stuff that Netflix is doing?

When PotApps was first mentioned in articles on MR, I actually thought it might be interesting. I thought it would be similar to a documentary about app developers, their challenges, influences, and basically how an app is made.

After learning more about what PotApps is about, and watching the trailer for it, it looks like a cookie-cutter game/reality show. It looks silly to me.

I am not knocking what you like, infant, I am probably the one that is out of touch with that is popular today. I just know that I am not interested in watching anything like that.

I agree with you here. Apple of the past was good at knowing what consumers wanted and needed before they did which was a big reason for their success today. But, they didn't forget about their core-competencies in their new and existing products. Apple is now just playing follow the leader with every other big tech company.

Things were so much better in the old days weren't they!

Who is Apl?

Who is Apl?

I thought it was the stock market abbreviation for Apple and a kind of comment on Apple only being concerned with money, like some use 'Micro$oft', but Apple's abbreviation is AAPL, so that isn't it.

Who is Apl?

It's a brand erosion indicator..think a canary indicator

Long ago about the time of 6s... I noticed Apl was heading south (when everyone else was in awe with $135 stock prices) , the main reason was their brand and running out of ideas. So upon launch of the Watch which was was so overhyped and supposed to be the big next thing (A pillar) , once I saw the "Galaxy of Apps" ridiculous UI and ugly pillow design , I removed an E as that caused Apl great harm brand wise by not having another major cool device to sell to their users like the 3 i devices , Appl Then fast forward the #SurfaceStudioEffect/Emoji/ pro bar fiasco so i remove a P for Apl losing people mindshare and professional market (they also killed off their eco monitors/routers etc) ...so here we are at Apl. Three more to go. WWDC coming up.

A brand can only survive as a brand. If not, they become AOL (still has 50K subs) and few care. Similarities YES (Raving fans , single product focus)

Oh, please. Comparing a music streaming service to the Mac, iPhone, and iPad is lazy and quite insane; the latter products are so easy to differentiate. Also, there's a difference between being late and being too late. Apple's inability to recognize and react quickly to both Spotify and Netflix (as the models for the future of entertainment consumption) is infuriating because they dominated with iTunes for the good part of the 2000s. Jimmy Iovine notified Steve Jobs a decade before the launch of Apple Music that the streaming music subscription model is the future of digital consumption, but they passed on it. Their entry into the streaming music market, that doesn't even have 100 million paid users, is still late. However, being late is not the same as being too late. I'll be more than happy to go into more details as to why they're different if you'd like! Anyways, Spotify's first mover advantage is strong in the market and they took mindshare away from Apple and iTunes in the process. That's quite sad for a company sitting on $250bn in "cash" and who has shown just a little over ten years ago how to disrupt user's consumption habits of music.

Have a great day!
