I think they just mean that it could be used as a Mac mini. Why buy a headset and a Mac mini when the headset is just as powerful and could be used as a Mac?
Simple. Because if you need a Mac Mini, a Mac Mini + third party 32" external monitor is still half the rumored headset price.

Another BIG question is, can the headset be plugged in to power all the time? Or will it require swapping battery packs to keep it going?

I don't think that makes much sense, I'd much rather have both devices, but I'm not really the demographic that would jump on something like VR/AR. (he says as there's 4 computers in arm's reach)

I don't know about that. Apple's Mac sales have been quite strong in recent years. It seems that more and more people are buying Macs, not replacing them with iPhone or iPad.
I think the Phone has helped Apple by increasing their share of the home desktop/laptop market, even as that market has shrunk as a whole.

But for a person who has already decided to get a headset, it would save them $500 if they also want a Mac. But this is purely theoretical. Apple hasn’t made a DeX-like mode for their iPhone or iPad, and they aren’t going to start with the Reality Pro.

Sure, but I'm talking about giving people a reason to buy the headset, not value adds for people who have already decided to buy it. And yes, Apple hasn't done anything similar with the iPhone, so there's really no reason to believe they'll start with the headset.

Definitely, which suggests that people aren't buying iPhones/iPads instead of Macs, but in addition to Macs...which takes us back to the suggestion that the headset might replace other devices. Apple doesn't want you to do that. They want you to buy an iPhone and a Mac and a headset.

This. Wasn't that the whole point of Universal Control? Three devices, side by side, able to seamlessly move a cursor between them? The idea that the headset is going to make everythign else obsolete...okay maybe that's "the future", but I don't think it's what Apple is aiming for right now. They introduce new products so you'll have one of each. The iPod only went away because its entire function was subsumed by the iPhone. A headset won't replace a Mac unless laptops and desktops themselves become obsolete. And it seems like laptops have been around for 30 years and desktops even longer, so it's hard for me to think they're going away anytime soon.

Agreed. There's also a lot of friction around taking goggles on and off. When the headset is a lightweight pair of AR glasses, it's a different story. For now, though, I see taking goggles on and off as a big problem when it comes to the headset replacing other devices. If the rumors are true about a hip-worn battery pack, that makes things even clunkier. I don't imagine anyone wants to wear VR goggles all day and experience his or her reality through cameras and a screen either.

There's no way the headset replaces any other device. I firmly believe that it will not be a fully stand-alone product either, but an accessory like the Watch.

First and foremost, I imagine that Apple views the headset as an accessory, not a new platform on the same level as iOS and macOS.
I think you are completely wrong here. I guess we’ll see in a week.
There's really no technical reason the Watch can't be a standalone product. With Siri and dictation, setup could be very easy.
Obviously Apple could make it completely standalone, but they don’t think the user experience would be as good. If Apple's $3000 Reality Pro needs an iPhone for the best experience for configuration, there is something very wrong with the Reality Pro.

No, it means that if an iPhone user wants a device with a desktop OS, they are more incentivized to get a Mac than a Windows machine. But the availability of very strong phone/tablet devices has made desktop/laptop less necessary. My sister replaced her Windows laptop with an iPad. She doesn’t have any device with a desktop OS. If she didn’t have the iPad as an option, she’d probably have got another cheap Windows laptop instead. If her income was higher, maybe a MacBook Air.

It seems likely that it will use a USB-C port to connect the battery pack so you probably could plugin into a power supply though depending on what you are doing that might be uncomfortable or a tripping hazard. We wont know for sure for about another week, though.

Lol. Impressive mental gymnastics. 😂
In the US, Mac has gained market share compared to Windows over the past 15 years, while the overall size of the desktop/laptop market has been stagnant, and maybe slightly declining.
I’d guess that the success of the iPhone has made people who are buying desktop/laptop computers more open to buying a Mac.

How is that “mental gymnastics”?

I'm curious, why would you want a video out? You wouldn't see it live, and any recording can be done by the headset itself.

Because I would want this to replace my macbook/desktop, especially at $3k. Keep in mind this is only *IF* the rumors come true that it will have a M2 chip and its own OS. No one is going to wear these goggles all day long, for starters the battery life just isn't there, and of course comfort and safety would be a major issue no matter how small they go these. I could envision these plugging into a desktop dock with an external monitor and power supply. For portable use I would envision an external screen, maybe even a foldable external touchscreen, with a larger external battery and input peripherals.

This is textbook pipe dream and I really doubt it will become reality, but it's always nice to fantasize before the official release.

FYI for those unaware, there are some pretty strong rumors, including an Apple patent filing for the name "XrOS" and "XrProOS" for an OS based on MacOS, presumably to run desktop class programs. NONE of that is verified and only rumors, and even Gurman thinks this may only be "apps" and not desktop programs, although he does mention Logic Pro and Final Cut Pro. But the rumors and patent filings are still fascinating, I haven't looked at the patent filings myself but will try to check them out later.
