I'm a recent owner of an iPhone 1st Gen (given to me by a friend who upgraded to a 3GS)

I'm also an AT&T prepaid customer that wanted to get an iPhone, but already is happy with my current carrier (Sprint) and have a great deal that I don't want to switch from.

Without having to shell out $80 a month for 450 mins of use I would never even remotely use up, I took my prepaid SIM card to the iPhone and did the unlock/jailbreak.

The best feature of using the jailbreak for me is the SBSettings app from Cydia. It allows me to turn on and off any of the iPhone functions and features (including the Egde modem).

Unlocking was the only way I could use the iPhone as a prepaid phone since AT&T started shutting down the legitimate use of it.

I pay for my service (using Pay As You Go plan) and I'm a happy iPhone user thanks to the unlock.

If I ever decided to get a 3G or 3GS, I would hope that I could do the same unlock to continue my usage. For now, I'm pretty happy.

I understand Apple's efforts to do this, but as someone who has zero interest in pirating iPhone apps (I pay for each one, both from the app store and Cydia), the unlocking of the iPhone allows me to be a paying customer.

Good for Apple!

I'd absolutely cheer if there was a way to brick every one of those iphones with pirated aps.

Well, thankfully jailbreaking does not necessarily mean that folks pirate apps, but if they do, their device they paid for should not be bricked, but instead some other course of action taken. :)

Just kinda sucks that there are all sorts of Themes for the Storm/2 on Verizon, but there is no way we can customize an iPhone. I am all for doing it legal, but Apple really tries to hold onto control too much, let people fart around, generally there are some really smart people out there that will conform to Apple's standards, but blocking it is what causes the JB and unlocking not approved by Apple. I do not call it piracy unless you are using software without paying for it, JBing is different because all the software is free, it is like Linux.
