All I want is Voice guided directions, like on my old android device. I understand it uses/use google maps on both devices; but why the hell doesn't Apple at least use voice guidance on the 4S phones. I mean they already have Siri, just incorporate that voice into the Maps app.

Being on vacation for the past week in southern Florida, i could of really used this multiple times. However, four people with me, whom all have iPhones two of which have 4S's, had frustrations with the GPS service.

Personally, I am a Navigon customer, and I would of brought my driving GPS, which trumps the experience on the iPhone, or any other device that just has one purpose. I'm just saying... It could use the iOS 6 overhaul.

Also as others have said 3D as showed in those C3 videos, is a gimmick! What I want is good, fast maps, POIs, navigation, voice guidance, day/night modes, 2D/3D(like in third party GPS apps) etc...

Same. If I want to find out where I am and how to get to X I'll use the maps app and rarely do I use satellite view as I want speed not pretty pics. Having said that I only use Maps when walking or to show someone where something is, not for driving - I have Metroview and TomTom for turn by turn navigation

Missing map data will be filled in very rapidly

What a lot of people are forgetting is that while Google has a large headstart, Apple's maps have the advantage of a massive installed base of iOS users and an open source user driven map data system. OpenStreetMap is about to get a major infusion of volunteer map reviewers.

iOS devices are everywhere in the world, from the biggest cities to the small farm town. If anything is missing or erroneous in your particular neighbourhood, it will be quickly filled in and/or corrected by users. It's "OpenStreetMap" after all. Apple should provide for an easy way to do this, built right into the map app.

Large cities will probably have no missing data, but maps of the rest of the world will catch up to GoogleMaps by this time next year.

As for the 3D view, it is not a gimmick. Just like satellite view and StreetView are extremely useful for providing context, a 3D view of a city will make it much easier to find what you're looking for.

Regarding turn-by-turn, no doubt that Apple will bring this in up to par with its competitors. Apple fell behind because they neglected their existing maps app while they built their own solution. Siri and turn-by-turn is an obvious good fit.

ive had this in iOS for years, you dont? MotionX - $2. Garmin - $40 (when i bought it).

the OS doesnt have to do everything. thats what applications are for.

I want something more built in so I could go straight from a address in an e-mail to the application.

----------

I agree, but it's the sort of gimmick Apple will want to implement so they can go "Look what the iPhone does!".

If Google maps go completely, surely we'll be left with no streetview. I've never heard of anyone other than Google archiving so much footage of the world's streets and roads.

Agreed. Not saying Apple wont make it its own but there are more important things in the pipeline me thinks...

----------

You want mathematicians and modelers working on voice features?

Maybe I should ask my art school friend to create some fancy new tools, that will help me fix other people's computers and speed up my workflow. :D

Glassed Silver:mac

No. I want Apple working on voice features that other phones, non-smart phones for that matter, have had for a hot minute now.

----------

This is quite literally the only thing I want. Google Maps on Android is far superior and it really shouldn't be. Not only that, but Google Maps on Android gets updated frequently. Apple needs to up their game with iOS 6. I hope 3D maps are not the only thing they're adding. I'm happy with TomTom for the time being, but I would much prefer a better integrated stock GPS solution from Apple.

Integrated is the word I was looking for. Thanks. And I agree. I don't care if it is fancy with 3D. I just want to set a destination and it speak to me.

I'm sure to start it would be "US Only" if it's not worldwide, but not because of market size, but ease of implementation in Apple's home country.

Now, that's the problem with Apple, yes they are an American company and Americans can be proud of them but this year about 70% of Apple's profits are outside of The US.
I've said this before and will say it again, it's about time Apple starts to think more global/international.
I am Dutch and there are a few of the biggest companies from Holland, Shell,Unilever, Philips, I am proud they are from holland but I am also aware that they are global companies which think global/International.

Siri is a joke right now and so will be this one if they start up as US only.

(Sidenote : Why so many Americans wants to bring back manufacturing to the US is beyond my comprehension, or pay American taxes, APPLE LISTEN YOU ARE A GLOBAL COMPANY NOW!)

Has anyone checked out http://www.yell.com/map/london.html? If you go to this page and then click on the "3D city" button in the map window you can see C3 Technologies in action. They have some 3D city maps in the UK.

The 3D maps look pretty good! The models seem a bit "rough" in parts but considering that they are done in bulk its not bad.

I definitely think this is better than what Google has shown so far.

Thanks for the link, that looked very nice.
On the other hand, it's fairly useless, street view is not.

And, it's still that crappy Flash.

Let's be honest, 3D is not going to be as good as street view; it's just so much more realistic (obviously).

But it's great knowing that the mapp app is going to change, a breath of fresh air more so than anything else.

i really don't blame Apple for going with their own mapping service. i just hope it's good

I just hope they didn't just change the back-end. Maps has been so outdated for so long now. The backend wasn't even the problem, Google maps was just fine. The problem was the front-end and all the lacking features it had.

So if all they did is plug in a new backend to the Maps app as it stands, they have serious priority issues.

Right, Apple should keep this new technology in the can until it's ready to roll out to cover every square inch of the planet, and not a second sooner.

Same with Siri. They should have held it until it could handle very language and dialect in the world before release. Good Grief!

*facepalm* no obviously not, but they can roll it in and maps that are not covered could be supplemented by Google Maps until new maps are available.

what I'm saying is that apple would be wrong to go 100% their own mapping solution at the detriment of their users if maps are only available for a limited part of the world. something I could see apple doing as we all know it can sometimes be a case of apple's way or the highway.

and siri is an irrelevant example as before siri was introduced siri didn't exist as a feature on the iPhone, there was Voice control and apple left that in for countries that don't have siri, and as a choice for all users who don't want to use siri.

This worries me, because - as we've seen with Siri - Apple will forget that there is a world outside the US, and will probably not update it to be a world map until 2046.

I am sure it will be "US Only".

Yup. I don't even use siri, because in Canada she is always giving me the "I can not look for locations in Canada" excuse.

Yah so what CAN you do then? jeesh. I like how fast the 4s is, and I like iOs. But I definitely got suckered into the stupid siri hype.

Been a long time apple supporter, but I can honestly say I am less than impressed.

(Sidenote : Why so many Americans wants to bring back manufacturing to the US is beyond my comprehension, or pay American taxes, APPLE LISTEN YOU ARE A GLOBAL COMPANY NOW!)\

Even for a global company, America is the best place for a lot of American companies to be right now.

Take a look at last quarter in the second largest economy in the world. There's significant concern in China that their economy is not booming at the rate it had originally expected. China grew single digit percentage for the first time in years last quarter. There are many significant reasons why investing heavily in the Chinese economy is hazardous to American companies. First, housing prices in Chinese cities are skyrocketing. If the bubble bursts, Foxconn goes under, then Apple is in some deep crap. The power grid in China is abysmal, and working on it, along with other industries have polluted China beyond belief. China's communist government is destroying their banking system, with huge loans being made and then never getting repaid.

I get you, but you're just wrong on this. American companies manufacturing in America is fantastic for their PR and American companies know exactly what they are getting here.

You can still use maps.google.com in Safari.

Oh yay. That will solve the problem of replacing a good app with a potentially inferior incarnation. Excuse me while I celebrate your ingenious solution </sarcasm>

Yeah, why don't you spew your garbage until you actually see the damn thing. All you have is rumor.

Sucking quality... No thanks. I don't need my Apple-devices to be of the same quality as us-cars.

Read a magazine or look at some online ranking before you post. That argument is outdated and holds no water.

Let's consider:

Japanese cars have a history of being extremely reliable. I give you that, my fiancée's toyota will last forever. HOWEVER, that does not mean the American equivalent is poor quality. Go look at the lists in which Japanese cars are ranked.

American cars DOMINATE. The best Lexus out there is a Buick and the best Toyota is a Ford.

I drive a German car, and while it is the most fun thing in the world to drive, I know it's going to cost a crap ton of money when it (inevitably) breaks down. German cars are zero reliability.

But if you have looked at a car in three years, you would know this already. If you fall for badge engineering a company can put a T or an L on the front of it, then there's no help for you. The auto industry is a triumph of American manufacturing.

Google is not the only game in town when it comes to maps... however they are the easiest to use and have the biggest marketshare.

The power of google maps comes from all of the other databases that they can pull data from.

Seeing as how Google Maps is one of iOS's killer apps... it will be interesting to see how well the new mapping application can compare.

Its an exciting time to be a fan boy

Don't know where - As even the best are only mediocre.

Here are the results from the yearly breakdown statistics of german car-club ADAC in 2011 (Link:

Microcar: 10th Ford Ka
Small cars: 8th Ford Fusion
Lower middle class: 18th Ford C-MAX
Middle class: 10th Ford Kuga
Upper middle class: no us entry
Vans: no us entry

Those aren't even American cars, they're designed in Cologne, Germany. The closest you can get to an American car in Europe is a Fiat Freemont, which is a Dodge Journey with the American engines replaced by a 2 liter turbodiesel.

Apologies if it has been discussed, but assuming iOS 6 (and mostly the next iPhone) will have the apple maps software, will we have any way to get google maps for those interested in having them ?

the iPhoto maps were really, really crappy.

Phazer

What if Apple used a slightly worse implementation in iPhoto for maps because they didn't want any spoilers for iOS6...

This! in bold. exactly. Apple obviously didn't have the new maps ready for iPhoto, presumably they built the iPhoto app to be reliant on the new maps coming, rather than using google maps and then having to recode it with a big update when iOS 6 came out. makes perfect sense if you think about it....

I hope it isn't as awful as the iPhoto app maps. They were horrid and dated. I wish they could get along with Google as their maps are some of the very best.

Really? As a cartographer I find Google maps some of the worst. Maybe because I grew up with the elegance of Ordnance Survey mapping.

Openstreetmap to me is cartographically more elegant than Google. Apple's implementation, not so much.

Of the online solutions, I find Bing Maps to be amongst the best.
