Check out the video again for the OS X dock!

The Video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zp-y3ZNaCqs

I didn't read all the posts for this but I can't believe nobody mentioned it yet. If you watch the video about 3/4 of the way through (when he goes into the 3D map and uses the zoom gesture that you see in the Apple patent diagram) you see a "dock" on the top of the screen. Look very closely and tell me that that is not an OS X dock! It has a trash can at the end separated from the rest of the bar. This has to be done on an OS X machine. I haven't seen any info outside of this video, and maybe you guys can tell me what technology was used for this (i.e. the computer and the system software). I'm telling you it's an OS X dock at the top of the screen. 😎

Another patent expanded on game use for an accelerometer sensor with drawings of a screen tablet game display. That application was also detailed with examples. If you look at Nintendo's upcoming device's promo video this technology would expand the gaming experience and make for some wild virtual ping pong internet play for example.
The possibilities are endless. 🙂

It's very OS X-like and probably inspired by Apple's dock (or NeXT's for that matter).

But it doesn't work like Apple's Dock (look how the selected function magnifies and stays that way) and it's at the top, not the bottom/sides. So it's not Apple's actual Dock. Interesting even so, but not proof of anything I fear.

New Ipod

What if it's a new ipod that will allow for video conferencing or digital photo capturing?? I'm sure they are going to be adding wifi and bluetooth.. the ability to capture video and photo's would make sense.

I don't know about doing this with an iPod-style device, because of the resolution limits you may get at those sizes, but I think that you're right that the Apple iFlyEye display is intended for imaging and scanning, and not primarily (or maybe even at all) a touch sensor. I suppose it would be okay for snapshots as VGA-ish quality in a handheld toy, but...

The biggest obstacle to using iFlyEye as an optical touch sensor is that many Apple customers are artists, and therefore vampires. They like to work in low-light rooms on dark displays, and their status as undead beings results in a lack of body heat to detect even as infrared light. If their bony appendages are placed against dark regions of the screen, there will be insufficient light available for the CCD to capture anything definitive, resulting in unreliable detection. I suspect that the living would encounter similar difficulties when experiencing migraines or hangovers, or pointing at the screen with objects other than their fingers.

Indeed, the iFlyEye application foresees this difficulty and suggests turning the surrounding display pixels white in low-light circumstances, but this would of course defeat the goal of color accuracy -- and vampires are very, very particular about their colors. This is an image capture scheme; touch sensing will be handled by other, more appropriate methods.

Looks more like a fairly generic toolbar, with one of the tools opening up a palette window. It's horizontal across the top instead of vertical, but doesn't seem that spectacular to me.

Look at about 1:49: it's pretty clearly just the icon itself magnifying (complete with label floating under it) and becoming a thumbnail, not a tool palette. And the other icons slide sideways (look to the left of the icon) to make room for the magnification, much like OS X. (I notice though that the leftmost icons stay fixed, while those after a certain division slide.)

It's not an Apple demo, but that Dock is Apple-inspired I'd say.

PS, play the game seen in the video:

15?

I have to ask - are they using 15 touch points because they feel you need to have one foot stabilizing you while your 10 fingers and other 5 toes are on the screen?

😎

15 so you can play with friends?

I admit - I only scanned the 4 pages before me, but I (like others) am drooling over the video. Amazing! I love it. Makes the future look exciting!

Now- I am anxious to see true gesture input. A way to interface with a machine similiar to sign language. Like if the camera on my imac could "watch" my hands and use those movements to activate programs- manipulate 3D data.... That's where I want to see this go.

People, all this technology is really important. We're looking at the future of GUI for everything!

Come on Apple, only you can pull this through.

Minority report

Hey,

Does anyone recall a few years back when Minority report came out, and Tom Cruise was whipping stuff around on a tranclucent screen...

At that point "everyone " wanted one of those 🙂

A translucent screen, or a Tom Cruise?

😛

I'm not a greedy man. I ONLY want a cintiq (with the excellent pressure sensitivity) like laptop running OSX. How hard can it be 🙄

This kind of technology has already been started; the later model G4 powerbooks and ibooks and the MacBook Pros have multitouch sensors in the trackpad!

Maybe this technology will mean that you can get an ACD with a PowerMac embedded into it! A 30" octcore PM.... *drool

this kind of stuff makes me wonder about how software companies could incorporate this functionality in their programs. i guess it wouldn't matter really though if it was based in the operating system. but take fireworks for example. you wouldn't need one of those pen tablet things anymore... just use your finger to draw and shade!
