Apple has kicked off a worldwide advertising campaign for its new streaming music service, with advertisements showing up in various cities like San Francisco, Tokyo, Toronto, Los Angeles, and Mexico City.

Billboards in San Francisco have been updated with new Apple Music ads, and the Omotesando and Harajuku Metro Stations in Tokyo have been updated with Apple Music banners. Some bus stops in Mexico City are also displaying Apple Music ads, and ads have also been seen on billboards in Los Angeles and Toronto.

The banners mimic images that have been used to advertise Apple Music on Apple's website, featuring desaturated pictures of artists overlaid with the Apple Music logo in a variety of different fonts.

It is not clear when Apple began its Apple Music advertising push, but the banners and signage appear to have gone up over the last few days. This is the first major advertising campaign for Apple Music since its June 30 launch and the first public ads, aside from videos that debuted at WWDC when the service was introduced.

As Apple begins heavily advertising Apple Music around the world, Billboard has announced that songs streamed from Apple Music will now count towards the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100. Apple was recently added as a streaming provider and Apple Music songs will influence the August charts.

The Billboard 200 lists the 200 most popular albums each week, based on direct sales, digital downloads, and on-demand streaming. The Billboard Hot 100 tracks individual songs or "singles" using the same methodology, ranking popularity on a weekly basis. New charts for both the Billboard 200 and the Billboard Hot 100 come out each Tuesday.

Other streaming providers that contribute to the charts include Amazon Prime, Google Play, Medianet, Rdio, Rhapsody, Slacker, Tidal, Spotify, and Groove Music Pass.

This ad campaign looks nice and all, but personally, I wish Apple would refrain from advertising this stuff until it gets the product working more smoothly.

Right now, everyone I know trying out Apple Music says the same things about it. On the plus side, they like the large music selection available. But they all have issues with slow syncing of data among multiple devices on a given iCloud account and there are too many rough edges. (EG. Often, I tap on a song to listen to it streaming and I see an icon with a little EQ with moving bars, indicating the music is playing - but i hear nothing. I've found I have to wait a good 10 or 15 seconds, sometimes, before it actually starts playing. But before I realized the animated EQ bars had no relation to what was actually happening, I kept cancelling and re-trying songs, thinking something went wrong.)
 
I've not used the service enough to judge on the quality, though I have to a say, not a fan of the interface at all. So much happening on screen, maybe I will get used to it, though I doubt I will sign up after the trial or even use it a lot during the trial itself.

My disappointment is beats 1, just teenage music, would have been good if they had less cool DJs that played decent old school hits, instead of just promoting their mates.
 
random question but how are songs that have been made available offline being counted? does it only count as one play or as one download or does it cache all the plays and sends them back to apple in the background?

I not understanding what problem happen with Apple Music. Custom stations work finely, Beats1 is first of kind and pretty cool, music discovery picks stuff I liking better than Rdio & Spotify and finding excellent tunes besides heavy radio rotation tracks, integration magnificent and streaming music sitting with next to my own mp3s side-by-side like, every thing working smoothly even on 4G cellular, and price on par with others. Seems perfectly fit for purpose, unless purpose is something besides music.
 
anyone notice that you cannot create a station base don an artist through itunes but you can through the app? when I try via iTunes, it tales me to the store to buy the artist, and doesn't have listing under radio tab

I've not tried any DJ curated stations. All I do is seek out what I already know I like and add it all to a play list. So it works fine for me like that.

It does okay suggesting other artists to me. Pandora does it better, though.

The only thing I liked about Apple Music was the fact that I was able to cancel the "Auto Renew" of my subscription before the trial period ends late September. That way I don't have to remind myself to cancel it.

There are horrible bugs in Apple Music at the moment. For example, sometimes trying to increase the volume of a song, the sound won't match up to the sound slider until I scrub through the song. Then all of it sudden the sound jumps to the correct volume. Add the crashes, freezing, and other bugs like the app saying the song playing but nothing is happening, or a song will play for 20 seconds before it automatically skips to the next song, and Apple Music totally feels like a rushed beta product. How it got released in this state is beyond me.

I have no had that problem...hmm...I agree though, it does feel beta a lot of the time...

All that "apple's marketing machine" does right now is infuriating people who are already upset with Apple Music not working correctly. So I think Spotify should be around for a while. Kind of how Ping didn't do anything to Facebook's dominance.

I agree. If they don't fix it before the early adopter's trial is over (end of September), it will be the beginning of the end of it. I see people going back to Spotify. And once they leave, they aren't coming back. They're not going to give Apple a second chance. Apple is very mistaken if they think they can leave it broken for years like Apple Maps and expect people to subscribe when a much better competitor has a free tier.
