Windows 11 only? I’m not jumping to Windows 11 until 10 loses support.
Well that is ofc your choice, but I think you might see more and more sw nor supporting windows 10 from now until its suppor terminates May 14 next year. I wonder if there is som new api in windows 11 that apple wants to use

I’m pretty sure windows 10 will be supported until October 2025. Windows 10 22H2 will lose support in May 2024 as you stated, but if you stay up to date with the new releases (why wouldn’t you?) you’ll get updates until October 2025. 😉

But going back on the topic. I’m glad Apple is releasing these apps for windows and hopefully retiring iTunes. Last year I wanted to restore an iPhone and iTunes was throwing me all sorts of errors. Had to use my partner’s MacBook Pro to be able to restore it.

Well these apps don't support podcasts, audiobooks or home sharing content to Apple Tv so many people will still need Itunes, also the Apple TV app for windows is terrible for purchased content, there is no way to mark something as watched or see what already was watched like you can in Itunes.

Good call! I was mostly talking about the devices preview app 😉 as I don’t use Apple Music or Apple TV+ (I prefer other services). But you’re right, as others have mentioned, these apps still lack some of the features that iTunes has. Hopefully they’ll add them by the time they become a stable release.

Hopefully Apple will at least keep iTunes on life support for a few years for Windows 10 users, as it does for folks with older versions of macOS like my High Sierra.

It would be quite hostile of Apple to leave Windows 10 users in the lurch, as Microsoft has given them OS support through 2025 if they cannot upgrade their PCs to Windows 11.

FINALLY!!!

but too late. I ended up buying another year of Spotify. It's not due to run out until 21 December this year. I'll be giving Apple Music another shot then.

If only they had released this a year or two ago... Apple would've had my money. I've been wanting to sub to Apple Music since getting my iPhone in 2020 but I refused to use the crappy web player or iTunes.

edit: just tried downloading it. seems it's not available here yet. at least it's showing up on the store. baby steps apple... maybe this time next year it'll be out of Preview and i'll actually be able to install it.

installs fine for me with UK region set
i'm in the UK and can't install it on W11.

Wow! I cannot f****ing believe it. Heck yeah! I've been waiting for Apple to cut the crap and make some of their services work on Windows just like they do on Mac. Well, at least close to that for now. Finally!

OMG it's about time. I've been using Cider for nearly a year and that works great. But I really wanted Apple to just make the app. Got it installed and it seems to be running great so far. No lyrics yet though. I hope those come later.

It doesn't for me doesn't even show up how did you do it?

If you click on the link and show in store it just brings up a box and does not go any further.

And yes have the latest update of Windows 11.

Once I changed my region to US, I was able to download it. Hopefully hardware media key support gets added soon.

Ever since I got the new computer in 2019, I have never had issues with Itunes. I might download this new apple music app when it's fully operational, but if I lose Itunes because of it, I don't think it's a good trade off.

After testing for a whole day during work...

It is way way way better than iTunes (everything really is).

Pro:
- fast
- modern looking UI that supports Windows 11 design language and light/dark mode
- uploads and downloads are supported
- lossless is supported
- tag editing is supported
- searching and playing is fast
- crossfade is supported

Cons:
- No lyrics support (yet)
- No airplay support (yet)
- MAJOR ISSUE 1: Media button API is not integrated so keyboard buttons or headphone buttons don't work.
- MAJOR ISSUE 2: They still use Windows Audio Session. So if I switch between headphones, speakers or my calling headset for work, the music doesn't switch automatically without closing and reopening the application. iTunes had the same issue for years.
- Minor issue: no playback controls in the taskbar preview like all other music players have (including iTunes)
- Minure issue: UI is locked at 60fps. Weird choice but not something most people will notice.

Good first step and I hope they fix the big things and add missing features overtime

I send this as feedback to Apple as well. I didn't test how it works with CD players, ripping support etc but I assume these features will not be implemented because it is 2023 and the app is for Apple Music subscribers mainly.

Windows 11 only is brave. It only has 16% market share of all Windows PCs. Will give the apps a go as soon as Devices supports file transfer for books, audiobooks and third party apps (File Sharing).

I don’t understand why Apple insists on poor support for Windows. I have an iPhone Apple TV and iPad Pro but use Windows on the PC. I have zero plans to change. Things like iMessage have me as an Apple customer in the not completely happy category. Hence, I periodically contemplate moving my mobile stuff back to Android. The experience for a Windows user is head and shoulders above what Apple provides.

With iTunes and Apple TV support and then add iMessage I would not even contemplate leaving Apple for the devices I already have. I would be a happy customer. If someone ever can deliver a workable, supportable Android phone that does not involve the Google play stuff I would seriously consider switching.

I came from Samsung to Apple and while I liked the ability to customize a lot of things, there was still too much Google involved.

Apple, I am quite sure I am not the only one in this situation. Make us happy customers.

EDIT: I installed the Intel Unison app on the PC and Phone today and it provides some good capability, it is not even close to what Phone Link and a Samsung phone can do.
Apple views Messages as a key part of its ecosystem and a way to keep people roped into their hardware, hence why the only services they offer outside of their ecosystems are ones they can monetize like Apple Music and TV+. Google and Microsoft are both software companies first and hardware companies second. It's in Microsoft's interest to both make Windows as compatible as possible so people want to use it, but also to make its own services as compatible as possible so it can rake in that Microsoft 365 subscription revenue. Google on the other hand will give you free email, a browser, messaging, photo organization, and a nice relaxing shoulder massage if you'll just let it have your sweet, sweet personal usage data. For an end-user it's frustrating but that's how these companies make money.

It's stupid and there is no reason since Windows 10 can only run on most PC's none of those stupid secure boot requirements and it is still supported. Windows 11 can even run Apple music using the Android app. Windows 10 has no such option. So, I guess it's back to Cider, even though it is buggy it is not as bad as that POS iTunes which often locks up on me. The only thing is that the web player needs to support lossless, then Cider can support lossless.

That sucks. I am forced to use Windows 10 on my 4 year old gaming PC which is still fast and capable of playing emulators. Just because my processor is one generation behind Windows 11 is not compatible. Now in two years I will be forced to buy an new PC and I refuse to use Linux which is a PITA to install or use. I hate the command line.
That the one I agree on. Run the Upgrade Assistant, and something not even close to obsolete is rejected?

So I wait for months and my still fast computer can't run it. I refuse to use that pos iTunes. What a joke Microsoft is. No wonder why I am liking macos more.

Don't know what you consider a "fast" computer, but you can get Windows 11 (22H2) on a device running Windows 10 - whether it's officially supported or not or if for whatever reason there is a "hold" for the necessary 22H2 update.

I'm running an unsupported 6th Gen Intel CPU device with Windows 11 without a single issue.
