I've used Apple Music since launch and never had any issues with it. I mostly stream via the iPad Pro 12.9 and it's a beautiful experience.

Actually, this is the problem. It's like these "bubbles" people live in on the internets when it comes to news and information. I don't want to just listen to the music I've heard a thousand times before, I want to be challenged and surprised.
Even if one uses the functions in all the music services that supposedly matches music "just for you", it's still only quite close to what I would listen to anyways.

But I don't listen to the same thing thousands of times -- that's not going to happen with a library of 40,000 tracks. The other thing that is great about AM is that it does a very good job of putting suggestions "Albums you may also like" at the bottom of an album page as well a listing more albums by the artist currently being listened to. I too want to be challenged and surprised, and that is what has happened to me using AM. For example, I don't find it at all limiting to have other Baroque composers or performers suggested to me when I am listening to Bach. I do want to stay in the Baroque area if that's what is interesting to me at the moment. However I do like to be challenged with a different performance viewpoint, different instrumentations, different arrangements, etc. If I'm in a bubble when using AM, it's a pretty spacious one.

I use AM, not Spotify, and overall think it's a great service. I guess I'm just baffled that 2 years later, AM has a big customer base, but the saying "A rising tide lifts all boats" seems to be more applicable in this case when defining Spotify's success.

I still think AM needs features such as:

  • Improved UI (I know it has improved, but Spotify feels more natural, and I'm not even a Spotify subscriber). UI is Apple's strong suit, so I'd expect this to continue improving.
  • Music Discovery - I'm not sure if "For You" is quite there. Apple's "mood" or "activity" playlists are rarely updated it seems.
  • Playlist Management - Where are Shared Playlist? Why can't I subscribe to my friend's playlists?
The music discovery is built right into the Browse module. The "You may also like" suggestions are very good. I have found the suggestions consistently superior to Spotify, at least with respect to my main interests of Classical and Jazz.
