Apple is doing fine. Another day, another opportunity to slag Apple - it seems to help people feel better about themselves.

Unlike a lot of other tech companies (Microsoft, Meta/Facebook, google, twitter, Dell, Oracle, Zoom, IBM, Saleforce, PayPal, Cisco, etc who have had massive workforce layoffs due to the economic downturn and poor management, Apple is doing fine. A big hat-tip to Tim Cook taking care of his 165,000+ employees.

Perhaps the wording was a little strong. I’ve never questioned Tim Cook’s ability to manage the company. Just software development part’s ability to work on several things at once. That’s all.

I totally agree with you on this. Either let us use our own music or let us mute the music. Sometimes not only do I dislike the music, but they play it louder than normal and I can't even hear the trainer.
Thought about this a little more and even though it makes perfect sense from a tech standpoint, the trainer is fully engaged with the music, talking about it and using the song's BPM and bass drops to drive the workout. It's likely also playing on speakers in the gym since they're not wearing headphones, so it would still be heard through their mic.

It would probably require an overhaul of how they record the sessions, everyone listening to music through AirPods and the trainer sticking to talking about the workout instead of the music. That said, it would still be nice to be able to turn off the music track and play our own.

Following the launch of Apple Music Classical, the first TV ad for the classical music streaming service has been released. The 30-second video features pianist Alice Sara Ott and conductor Karina Canellakis performing Beethoven's Piano Concerto No. 1.

Apple Music Classical is now available to download on the App Store around the world. Apple highlighted the launch with a press release today.

"Apple Music Classical is a dedicated app that is great for classical experts as well as anyone who is new to classical, with the largest classical music selection in the world, the very best search and browse capabilities, the most premium sound experience with Spatial Audio, and thousands of exclusive recordings," said Apple Music chief Oliver Schusser.

Apple Music Classical offers over five million classical music tracks and is included with a standard Apple Music subscription at no additional cost. The app is available for iPhones running iOS 15.4 or later, with no iPad version available and an Android app coming soon. For more details about the app, read our coverage from earlier today.

Doesn’t seem to see my music on iTunes Match. Is it supposed to work with that service?

After a day's use (thanks to living in Noo Zillund), there is a lot that's good, but also a lot to complain about.
  • The presentation is great.
  • It works well if you just want to stream music (which is the only option right now).
  • The library management is terrible as you can't sort by composer.
  • You can't download.
  • No iPad or Mac app.
They haven't quite cracked the search yet. With pop music, searching for things you don't have is basically like searching your library. E.g., Pink Floyd have 15 studio albums + a few live albums and compilations. A search in Apple Music will quickly let me see everything that Floyd did whether it is in my library or not, purely because there aren't that many results.

Meanwhile, there are hundreds of recordings of the Beethoven symphonies. Apple Classical does fine with showing me the hundreds of recordings available, but doesn't let me quickly find the two dozen or so recordings I have saved in my library.

So it's a good streaming service, but currently lousy at letting you build a library.

I'd love to have Fitness+ workouts separate audio channels with just the trainer on one and music on the other, with the ability to play my own music. There are workouts I don't do because I'm not into the genre of music in that workout's playlist.

I totally agree with you on this. Either let us use our own music or let us mute the music. Sometimes not only do I dislike the music, but they play it louder than normal and I can't even hear the trainer.

It really seems like they are going for the “loud gym with over-enthusiastic trainers” vibe. It seems very intentional so I would be pleasantly surprised if they added these options.

I do like the workouts, and the fact that they have two other people demonstrating alternate techniques. It’s quite well done, but the loud gym vibe isn’t quite my thing either.

Who thought not having an iPad or Apple TV app was a good idea? Without those this app is DOA, at least for me. I use Apple TV for music to my HomePods as much, if not more, than my iPhone. Baffling decision.
It seems like it's the iphone that drives apple software preference so I wouldn't expect them to try it anywhere else first, afterwards I'm sure can better see how to adapt it for all the other platforms; phones first at least. I don't think it's surprising, and many users aren't satisfied enough with the phone app yet.

Apple has way more active iPhone users than iPads, Macs and Apple TVs combined. I find it a stretch to claim said app is dead just because it’s not supported on Apple’s least popular platform.

The functionality really should be built into Apple Music app: Needing another app is just horrible UX. Having to add the same classical pieces to library in two apps, figuring out what pieces are available in what app, and not being able to combine them is same playlist is idiotic. Not being able to use Classical at all on my Apple Watch, iPad, CarPlay or MacBook is unforgivable.

Apple, PLEASE, get back to USER CENTRIC product management. Even if having a separate app would be easier from organisation structure point of view, do not!

Glad it’s a separate app. It would have been atrocious if combined with Apple Music. Not trying to be like Spotify who crams all the latest Tik Tok garbage into a single screen.

You’re just wrong here. The metadata is structured in a fundamentally different way. Using the same app would’ve resulted in severe bloat.

Nerd alert.

They actually play Beethoven's Piano Concerto Op. (not No.) 15.

The joke is she sees Op. 1 and begins playing, but then he types the 5 and Ott begins to play that and Canellakis and (presumably) the Netherlands Radio Philharmonic Orchestra join her in playing Op. 15.

Told you it was nerdy.
Nice catch!
