Spotify is $11.99/month here (US) for an individual non-student plan.

I've tried Apple Music out several times, and it just doesn't fit me. I always end up going back to Spotify. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Same boat. The whole app, discovery, radio, podcasts, etc. There is simply a lot more going on there and you have the impression that you will discover a lot more new music than on Apple Music.

I know it’s intentional to keep one subscribing, but I hate how AM clears your entire library upon cancellation. At least keep the songs and block them from playing so I don’t have to rebuild the entire list.

No kidding, right?

That's super user hostile and honestly the sort of thing that would permanently turn me OFF from ever being a customer

It's just "wrong"

I'm still an iTunes Match customer — I only get my purchased (online or on CD and ripped) music, but I get it on all my devices and a lot cheaper than an Apple Music subscription.

It'd be nice to get rid of some of the archaic stuff in Apple's music (lowercase) ecosystem, like authorizing and deauthorizing the limit of 5 devices for purchases, where I would expect nowadays for my Apple ID to authorize me.

"Offer not available if you are eligible for a three‑months‑free Apple Music offer. Terms apply. "

Oh that's nice, because I paid a couple of grand for a new laptop, I get three months less than someone who hasn't!

Thanks a bunch Apple!

Part of my wishes to go back to the days of iTunes and buy an album, or even song, one at a time. Streaming is great, but reality is I probably could easily go back to owning physical copies of music and streaming through free platforms. But now I have the “carrot” of unlimited music for $10/month that I am too weak willed to pass up.
I remember back in the day when I would go out for a walk or something and have a couple CDs that I would take with me to load into my Sony Walkman. And then a new album would come out and I would have to think about whether it was worth buying or not, and there was a lot of things that I just wouldn’t listen to because I didn’t think it was worth buying whereas since Apple Music came out if a new album comes out it’s as simple as a click away. I’ve been exposed to so much new music that my musical taste have changed over time and I have playlist now that I wouldn’t even come close to having 15 or 20 years ago

Streaming music is a technology, I dreamed of when I was a kid

So I don't get Apple Music and what is supposed to do please shed some light. I am an Amazon music subscriber and when I ask Alexa to play a song I don't have libraries and it simply plays the song or artist etc. I signed up for this promotion and while driving yesterday I asked Siri to play a song. Her first response was you must unlock your iPhone first. Ok so I did that. Then I asked Siri to play a specific song again and she said it's not in my library maybe ask to play a radio station or something like that. Am I missing something? I thought it worked like Amazon music if not it's useless to me. I wanted to give it a shot as I think it used to work like Amazon music which is going up to 200.00 per year for my family plan this month.

Exactly the experience I had with my HomePod that made me sell it pretty quickly

Interactions like this are MADDENING

I have Apple Music through Apple One (family subscription) and I find that a great deal because I do enjoy ATV+a lot.

Although I use it almost every day (car) I'm not certain I would use it with a solo subscription. I can say that now after having I certainly see more value in it.

Is the music you buy with Apple music DRMed? ie you have to use the app to listen to it, whether you have an active subscription or not?

Not my experience at all. If I ask Siri to play a specific song, it is played. Or, I can say "Siri play Miles Davis." And it will play his music. Or... I can say "Siri play blues" and a variety of blues music will be played (for hours, if I let it), and will work for any music genre.

All of the above is very routine. It just works... extremely well, whether it's in my car using CarPlay, or at home using any of my seven HomePods.

Having all-you-can-eat music in any genre, by any artist, any where I happen to be (hiking, in a car, at home), instantly playable, is pretty sweet. Apple Music is awesome.

If there was a way to prevent Apple Music from hosing my existing library of music where I have many modified and rare tracks, I would sign up. However, there continues to be many people who have had significant issues losing music on their own hard drives after subscribing to Apple Music, which I don't want to deal with.

Have a free 3 month offer that I’m not going to use, tried it a few years ago but it’s just not for me. Prefer playing my own ripped music thru AM
This is actually a huge selling point for Apple Music for me. I have a bunch of stuff I've ripped from CDs that's not available for streaming at all, and once the tracks are uploaded from the Music app on my Mac, I can stream them on my phone. I don't have to manually sync anything, and it largely "just works".

Just the other day I was playing that first De La Soul album -- the one that's so loaded with samples they were never able to clear it for streaming. But becuase I own the CD and ripped it to iTunes like 15 years ago, I can play it right alongside new (and just new to me) music I find on the general Apple Music catalog.

Back when I was using Spotify, I'd manually sync music from iTunes over to my iPhone, and then parallel to that would listen to newer stuff on Spotify. Now I can just freely mix everything together and it's great.

Not my experience at all.

Lucky ... I'm jealous

I get the random "you need to unlock your phone" for seemingly no reason out of the blue nearly weekly on my walks where, here in Winter, I tend to use Siri more (vs taking gloves off an interacting with phone) ... I still do volume myself through my pocket by feel on buttons on side of phone (quicker than Siri for a quick nudge up/down)

It's infuriating

I think it's improved over the years. I would suggest making some really good, solid backups (which I'm sure you're doing anyway) and giving it a try to see how it goes. My experience has been pretty good lately, but I've also adjusted my expectations such that I find it tolerable to see the occasional glitch. You might have different standards!

can I delete this app from macbook? can I disable it from being launched forever??

Sadly Google knew what they were doing when they bundled YouTube Premium and YouTube music together. I could probably never leave YouTube premium and I don’t think the other music services offer enough of an improvement for me to justify paying for both services.

Agreed - YT Premium including it is what got me into using YT Music

I know this is going to sound cliché, but there really is something about holding physical music in your hands such as vinyl or a CD. I was pulled in by the convenience of the digital music revolution and parted with my vinyl and CD collection as well as my home audio system. Years ago every Sunday I would go to World Record near the OSU campus and treat myself to a CD, a ritual I miss.
A few years back I dropped $20,000, on an analog home audio system; tube amp, turntable, phono pre-amp and speakers. I don’t regret the decision at all because there’s nothing like the sound of vinyl and a class A tube amp. The most inconvenient aspect of listening to vinyl is the lack of continuous play. I still stream music using Apple Music and Spotify via Sonos speakers but the sound quality isn’t on par with my analog system.
Not sure what happened to Cover Flow but it gave me somewhat of a sense of the physical nature of owning music.

Same here. I still buy CDs from artists that I really care and others just download it. Streaming can be great to learn about new artists and music but if I really like it, I much rather buy it and forget about paying ever again.
Where do you buy CDs these days? I bought my first in 1988 and now have probably close to a thousand but haven't bought one in several years, basically since BMG and Columbia House closed shop.

Lately I've been buying a dozen or so DVDs each month from Amazon, Thrift Books and Hamilton Book. I'm getting tired of films and TV series bouncing around streaming services, which keep going up in price. So I'm building a library and probably will let all of my streaming services expire.

There’s a setting in Settings you can set so you don’t need to unlock your phone when using Siri.
