Apple Music and lyric database Genius today announced a partnership, allowing Apple Music subscribers to visit Genius and play any song in full on the song's lyric page. This will work both on the Genius website and in its iOS app.

The partnership will also beef up Apple Music's own lyric database with Genius's information, providing the music streaming service with lyrics to "thousands" of songs. Apple first introduced lyrics in Apple Music with the launch of iOS 10 in 2016, and now the feature will be enhanced with Genius.
To use the Apple Music player on Genius, search for any song, and then tap "connect account" when the player pops up. This process will require you to allow Genius to access your Apple Music, media library, and listening activity, and once you accept you'll be able to listen to full tracks within Genius on the web (desktop and iOS mobile web) and in the iOS app.

In Apple Music, you can check on a song's lyrics by tapping the ellipsis icon at the bottom right of the player screen on iOS, then tapping "Lyrics." Not every song supports lyrics, and it's unclear how soon the Genius encyclopedia of lyrics will be added to Apple Music.

Hmm, but will iTunes Match subscribers benefit as well? Or is this an Apple Music exclusive?

Thank goodness. Some of the lyrics in Apple Music are so wrong, you'd think they used Siri to populate them.

What are these garbage lyrics? I am so glad I left hip hop years ago.

I've been viewing lyrics on songs from my iTunes library since the iPod Classic days. It finally died with the Sierra or High Sierra update, but I used to run a little shareware app called Get Lyrical that would look up lyrics to anything in iTunes and then copy them into the song file. Even now, a huge percentage of my library has lyrics in it, which is great.

"Thousands of songs" doesn't sound like a lot. Maybe a 1 person company?

Hopefully it's not the same as the Spotify version which just gave you random facts while trying to follow lyrics.

They have more than thousands of songs. Genius has a page for pretty much any song you could ever want to look up. They’re by far the most insightful and useful lyrics service out there. Incorporating genius into apple music would be huge

Am pretty sure Genius have a “Behind the Lyrics” feature on Spotify?

I was waiting for this to happen. Genius is probably the largest curated site for lyrics or at least the most convenient/popular. I kinda thought Apple would just shell some cash to acquire them like Shazam but I’m still down for this.

Now, lets “partner” with MusixMatch for lyric-scrolling-widgets ;)

And the thing is, some of the lyrics are too hard to get so you you know a real person had to vet them ― while others are so ****ed you think how could a human spell werdz like that, it's not even English!

I've submitted countless feedback reports over them, all to be corrected 2 weeks later

999,999 is technically “thousands”, so they could possibly have more than you think.

Maybe stop listening to terrible hip hop? There's plenty of great artists out there with amazing lyrics. Kendrick just won the Pulitzer Prize for music with his latest album.

On one side Apple wants a family-friendly image of itself (, on the other side they're partnering with a service that slaps a header image containing a garbage lyric. Among "thousands of song" weren't they capable to find something more appropriate?

IMO this is necessary functionality for any decent lyrics feature.

Well that's just false. I tried six bands, I got results for three.

Welcome to corporate "music." Check your brain at the door, but keep your credit card handy.

No thanks. I don't want to share my personal information with yet another third party.

I hope this improves some of the lyric results because there have been some really dumb interpretations of some pretty obvious lyrics in the current selection.

Hopefully they implement it better than in Spotify. It’s highly annoying that there is no toggle to switch between “Behind the lyrics” facts and the actual lyrics.

This does not even come close to the synchronized song lyrics service by musixmatch

Agreed. Only reason I still have the app installed is because the widget is awesome. I like that Apple is supporting lyrics but taking up an entire screen is not user-friendly.

Maybe the Shazam acquisition can take MusixMatch’s idea with a widget, add a low power “always on” option to easily scan music in real time and only bring up the full page of lyrics/Genius annotations if I tap into widget bringing me to either AM or Shazam’s page (if they app won’t be discontinued)?

Hopefully iOS 13 really beefs up the music app *fingers crossed*

What do you expect? Are the *** coded unpronounceables included in the lyrics or are they just visible to the world?
