I like Amazon Music and YouTube Music over both. lol. Pandora and iHeartRadio are the worst of the worst though.

3 device limit? I use Spotify on at least 13 devices (2 iPhones, 1 iPad, 2 Macs, 1 Windows PC, 2 Android tablets, 1 Windows Phone, 2 Android phones, 2 Echo Dots), and that's not counting when I open it and use it on a web browser on Chromebook or other computers I don't even own.

The biggest fail of Apple Music is the lack of basic web browser player for cross-platform users and it offers nothing unique in a sea of streaming music services. My top three have browser support:

- Soundcloud (even works on mobile browser and continues to play when browser is in the background and also a great source for indies)
- Spotify
- Google Play Music

It’s not surprising when it’s the only app that works properly with Siri and Watch OS. I personally don’t prefer it over Spotify but there isn’t really a great deal between the two.

It would be nice if there were some aggregator subscription that allowed you to access music from the various services.

Sonos does this. But I am sure you are talking about a mobile option.

I haven't had Spotify in years as I moved to Moog for the MUCH better quality, then to Beats and the AM. I also use Tidal with Roon for high quality streaming.

A few things I see counter to some comments in this thread.

One poster said that AM runs to modern music and does not recommend anything from the past. Well my recommendations today included such modern commercial heavyweights as Jerry Jeff Walker, Bobby Gentry, and John. Prine.

If you want to see what favoring popular junk is, try Tidal and just try to get rid on the Hip Hop and contemporary pop bias. I can thumbs down Jay-Z and Beyonce all day and they are always at the top of the lists. Dig deeper and it gets much better though. Of course Tidal is bleeding money with no end in sight so I don't figure it will last too much longer, too bad as the quality is much better than the other options in the US.

One poster said AM has lossless, sorry but there is nothing lossless on AM of Spotify, Tidal remains the best US option for that.

The HomePod does have a perfectly functional iPhone/iPod/Watch interface. It uses Airplay so you can control it from any Apple device. No need to reinvent the wheel there.

Fair point, allow me to clarify -- with my single-user account there is a 3 device limit when simultaneously logged into my premium Spotify account, while also downloading songs for offline use. It's my understanding with Apple Music, up to 10 devices can be simultaneously logged into a single-user account while also downloading songs for offline use. Having said this, the greater pain point for me is the 3,333 song download limit imposed by Spotify per device -- again sharing my own experience as a single-user with Premium. I recently ran up against this limit, and am finding this an increasing frustration given my heavy use of Spotify off-line.

Using Google Play installs? Really?

I'll give you an opportunity to think and research before commenting. And, a bonus if you can provide unique download stats for Spotify and Apple Music on Apple App Store.

Aside from Tidal they all have mostly the same catalog of music. The only real exceptions are bootlegs and fringe music, so I don't know if there would be enough of a base to support an aggregation business of this type.

Seems folks can't agree on which service is better. But we know Apple Music is not the worst piece of software on the planet simply because iTunes is.

Doesn't Spotify have way way more customers who just listen for free though?

Maybe, but wouldn't that include non-active "subscribers" like me who have subscribed for the free service and don't use it, but also never cancel it because it doesn't cost us anything.

I tried it for a while, but I can't stand that when I make a playlist, Spotify fills it 50% with their own choices too. The entire reason why I make a playlist is for a specific group of songs. I don't want suggestions in there.

I don’t like the iTunes/Music App integration, it’s clunky and annoying. If they would make a stand-alone app maybe it wouldn’t be a pain, but Spotify just does everything so well.

Plus Spotify doesn’t destroy your library and playlists if you unsubscribe to try Apple Music for a couple of months ;)

I use the free tiered version on my iPad of Spotify since you can see any song on demand with occasional ads. I use AM when I’m on the go. I do agree that music discovery is miles ahead on Spotify. That’s one thing Apple needs to improve. That, and also give us a dark mode Apple! That will push Apple Music over the top over Spotify worldwide IMO.

Apple has monopoly power over their OS, which is the only reason they’d beat Spotify subscriber count.

What does that mean? Apple makes the hardware and software. That's like saying Ford has a monopoly on the Mustang.

Why would Apple need browser support for Apple Music? lol.

Huh? I have a zillion playlists in Spotify and I've never had any of them fill up with music I did't put there myself. The only way that happens is if you subscribe to a shared playlist.

The two are not mutually exclusive. You can rent music AND own what you really like. By renting music you can discover all sort of things, and if a tune pops in your mind you can listen to it and then forget about it. Owning is not stopped by renting.

With Apple becoming a walled garden I’m thinking of moving my music back to a local server instead. I can still steam my library to my wireless devices but the sound quality-at least when I’m at home and using my stereo-will be higher. And I can easily use non Apple hardware and software, mixing and matching as needed. Sony tried to pull the proprietary crap in the late 1990s with the Discman and ATRAC format. I’m not any more happy with Apple trying to do the same thing today.

And just for the record, I also had iTunes Match and I also had a significant portion of that uploaded music disappear from my account. No help or solution from Apple Support, and I have been told that none is coming, and with Apple closing off easy access to and from their hardware and software now is the time to look at other options. Maybe sign up for Tidal or Qobuz or some other top end streaming service.

No, these are definitely my playlists, not shared playlists.

Every single one of my playlists was fine for months, years even. Then one day every single one of them was polluted by Spotify adding songs I hate. Now I feel like all of the work I put into them was ruined.
