Apple earlier today announced a new feature coming to Apple Music that will allow users to sing along to their favorite songs, either alone or with friends and family. The new feature will be a perfect fit ahead of the holidays and parties; unfortunately, there is one big catch.

Apple Music Sing will only work with the latest Apple TV 4K model, which was announced in October, according to Apple's press release earlier today. The limitation will mean customers of older Apple TV models will miss out on the new feature. Apple Music Sing will also be available on the iPhone 11 and later and the third-generation iPad Pro and later.

It's unclear why only the latest Apple TV is supported, especially since Apple Music Sing is ideal on a large TV screen with friends and family gathered around. Compared to older models, the new Apple TV 4K has the A15 Bionic chip and support for HDR10+. Apple Music Sing will be available later this month.

This new model can’t do anything my ATV 4K 2017 can’t already do with the exception that it supports threads if you buy the 128GB model.

Dolby vision videos at 60 fps is new to you. (Not to 2021 owners)

This one of those things where next year, tvOS is gonna get some update that’s exclusive to this model, and everyone is going to complain and ask why their 2017 or 2021 model can’t do it.
Ha! I was right.

Hmm do you really need the A15 to support something like this? Probably not but might push the sales before the holidays for the new ATV.
I guess an A13? That's what is in the iPhone 11. The last gen Apple TV only has an A12.

So technically there might be a legitamite reason. With Apple's track record though it's probably just them being stingy.

2nd gen tv has A12
third gen iPad pro has A12X
iPhone 11 has A13

come on, it's clear why a new tv is needed

you really think Apple is going to deny millions of customers a potential switch to Apple Music just for that sweet $100 hardware revenue instead of perpetual service margins?

Why would this feature need a lot of CPU? It's literally just putting lyrics on the screen and playing a version of the track with a separate vocal track?
It isn't though, it is doing a lot of realtime processing to pull out just the vocals and adjust them. Whether it needs the current ATV, that's a different story.

Apple Music Sing includes:
  • Adjustable vocals: Users now have control over a song’s vocal levels. They can sing with the original artist vocals, take the lead, or mix it up on millions of songs in the Apple Music catalog.
  • Real-time lyrics: Users can sing along to their favorite songs with animated lyrics that dance to the rhythm of the vocals.
  • Background vocals: Vocal lines sung simultaneously can animate independently from the main vocals to make it easier for users to follow.
  • Duet view: Multiple vocalists show on opposite sides of the screen to make duets or multi-singer tracks easy to sing along to.
Apple Music will also be launching a suite of more than 50 dedicated companion playlists featuring all of the epic songs, duets, choruses, and anthems that have been compelling people all around the world to sing — fully optimized for the Apple Music Sing experience.
