Not being up on the reason for this limitation (as all other posters here apparently). It must be a grand conspiracy, just saying.

In reality, the older Apple TVs also have the words of the music show as a song is played, so ummm, couldn't someone just use that? Just saying.

Now seeing I don't have any of the tech where they said it is supported, I can't see what it is doing that might warrant this limitation (Neither can the author apparently).

Time for me to replace my Apple TV 4K from 2017, I guess. I really want to be able to use this feature. It would be a lot of fun for my family.

I think it probably removes lyrics "on-the-fly" or instantaneously... using ML
But there is no need to do it on the fly. It could process it before you start playing it, might have to wait like 30 seconds or so before it starts.

Apple most likely wants to maintain a high quality experience and the latest Apple TV unit does that. Fortunately, I have the new Apple TV 4K 128 GB. I have no reason to complain...😂

This is lame! It was the feature I thought should have been included when they launched the lyrics on the screen in the first place.

Also how much processing would actually need to be done on the machine? Wouldn't it just switch and stream a vocal free version when you ask for it and all processing would have been done on Apple's end?

Petty move by Apple as usual.

We need more of this (Not a fan of the news network however a fan of the questioning):

Let's not forget Ricky Gervais at the golden globes:

Sad that you feel you even need to make this statement. If your comment and the media you refer to is honest, that is all that should matter. 😞

Apple earlier today announced a new feature coming to Apple Music that will allow users to sing along to their favorite songs, either alone or with friends and family. The new feature will be a perfect fit ahead of the holidays and parties; unfortunately, there is one big catch.

apple-music-sing.jpeg

Apple Music Sing will only work with the latest Apple TV 4K model, which was announced in October, according to Apple's press release earlier today. The limitation will mean customers of older Apple TV models will miss out on the new feature. Apple Music Sing will also be available on the iPhone 11 and later and the third-generation iPad Pro and later.

It's unclear why only the latest Apple TV is supported, especially since Apple Music Sing is ideal on a large TV screen with friends and family gathered around. Compared to older models, the new Apple TV 4K has the A15 Bionic chip and support for HDR10+. Apple Music Sing will be available later this month.

Makes you wonder if there is truly a hardware limitation. I’m loving the 50% CPU and 30% GPU increase in performance, but, does any of that make something as simple as karaoke possible vs. not possible?

I’m leaning towards no.

Next stop Apple Guitar Hero... Seriously, is karaoke anywhere near as big as it was a few decades ago?

Why would this feature need a lot of CPU? It's literally just putting lyrics on the screen and playing a version of the track with a separate vocal track?
Is that what it's doing, or is it using the processor to cancel out the vocal track and leave just the music?

If it's the latter, I can definitely understand the need for the more advanced DSP (digital signal processing) on an A13 or newer.

Pretty weak move by Apple. Fortunately I doubt anyone really cares about this.
So true, another useless ****** feature nobody wants or asks for.

Yeah, certainly people singing along to songs they like isn't a thing.

I mean, could you imagine if whole establishments were set up for this kind of thing? Ha, ridiculous!
this is a home feature, nobody thinks about karaoke bars, you cannot even use apple music in public places.
