But ofc they are. Timmy C never met an opportunity to nickle & dime to profit even more he didn't like....
It's called inflation. Business costs are going up everywhere – including infrastructure costs for running massive streaming services. Costs raise, and companies pass price hikes on to customers to cover those increasing costs. I'm upset I can no longer buy a new car for $3,000 like I could in the 1960s, but I don't blame the CEOs of Ford and GM.

Apple Music has great features like shared playlists and profiles. In many ways, Apple Music better than Spotify for social discovery experiences. Apple Music sounds better, is more social, and is baked right into the overarching iOS/iPadOS/macOS/tvOS/watchOS experience.
I see this so many time in many forums « Apple Music sounds better than Spotify «
How can AAC 256 sounds better than OGG 320 ?
I have the AirPods Max and done many many tests on same songs , I don’t hear any difference.
Sometimes a difference with the Masters used , but a difference in quality not at all.

And what is the reason for this 20% increase?
Apple getting ahead of the possible (i.e. very likely) increase in the streaming royalty rate for 2023 to 2027 period that the Copyright Royalty Board will be deciding on very soon since the current period (2018 to 2022) will be expiring.

I think it's also why Amazon raised Amazon Music subscription prices back in May.

I expect Spotify and others to follow with rate increases soon/sometime this year

Yea that’s it Apple. Squeeze an extra dollar out of students who don’t have it. You really are the scum of the earth.
It is an enjoyable but unnecessary service for students, with many of them using more than the rest of us but paying much less, thus unfairly making us subsidize them. Our price might still increase, but the increase would be more if the student prices stay the same.

Of course, part of it is that Apple is making us subsidize them to get them invested in the service and less likely to go to a competitor when they eventually have to pay full price. Those of us who pay full price are paying for the students to enjoy the service, and paying part of Apple's marketing to make this happen. I don't want to be robbed more than I have to.

So how about Apple eat the cost instead of squeezing people.

Tbh the one and only reason I use Apple Music is because it's baked into the Siri/Shazam functionality (and because the family has Apple One) and I use that a lot

I have found the only thing even remotely on point music-wise is YT music and/or YT itself. Apple Music feels like it is being curated by a bunch of guys in their 50s, with a sprinkle of generic mainstream music on top of that.

Same with Spotify, not particularly much better.

Maybe I am not the typical customer, but I never got the idea behind a music library anyway. I can't fathom myself listening to the same songs for decades

You haven't paid much attention to Apple under Tim Cook have you?
True, just a shame they're taking this unnecessary choice. It's not like they need the cash - student actually do at the moment. Everything is increasing and this will surely switch more people off... although I imagine they'll have a sneaky plan to hide the increase notice at the bottom of a spam email.

As time goes on, the less I care about Apple Music. Apple have made some sloppy decisions, and iTunes/Apple Music has become worse with each version.

It should be snappy and slick. Instead we have an application on Mac with tons of wasted white space, arrows and navigation all over the place and really bad UI.

In which ways? I can see it wrecking playlists.

It torpedoed pretty much everything. Duplicated albums, albums with missing tracks, hidden purchases. You name it, it messed with it. And this was with a library that was very well managed prior to the advent of Apple Music. Not saying everyone will be affected in the same ways but personally I’m never touching it ever again.

When I was a student in college in the 1970s we didn't get "student discounts" on much, if anything. I couldn't have afforded much anyway. We had to pool our money together to get cable TV in those days, and any other luxury was out of the question. These days I think most students pretty much just get mom and dad to pay for everything, so the discounts are probably going to parents more often than the students anyway. Retirement discounts would be nice, but fat chance of seeing those with Apple!
