I have Spotify Student. I will never use Apple Music because they try too hard to integrate your local and cloud music. I get that that's what most people want buy I prefer this setup:

  • iTunes is my master (mostly lossless) library. It's backed up and contains only songs I deem fit (pretentious, but I didn't mean it that way) to be there.
  • I use Spotify for music discover and to save albums that I will add to iTunes later. Spotify acts like my database of "to purchase" music. Eventually I'll get the CD or the ALAC files from Bandcamp or Loudr, add it to iTunes and remove it from Spotify.

I like that Spotify is a separate app clearly distinct from my local music. I don't want to burn data listing to what I thought was local, but now is off loaded. Plus I heard hurry stories about their iTunes library getting messed up. And on top of everything else, their music app is just horrid. For me to start using a 3rd party app (Cesium) Apple had to really screw up. All that has pushed me firmly away from Apple Music.

/rant that no one really cared about anyway.

Cesium is great, I started using it too after Apple messed up their own Music app. But, Cesium on the iPad doesn't exist. You can use the iPhone version, which is just bigger/ugly. Did you find a good alternative for the iPad?

So why they REALLY want from you is proof that you are pirating music. Being a student is good enough proof and pretending to be a student is an even better proof. So you are the perfect customer, a fake student. They got you to pay $5 when otherwise you'd pay zero.

Actually, I used to pay full price until this summer when I found out student pricing was even a thing was I was looking around my subscriptions in my iTunes account. When I saw all they wanted was a .edu email address I switched to that pricing.

I've been a loyal (paying) Spotify subscriber for several years and recently gave Apple Music a try. My god, Spotify does SUCH a better job with their app. Songs load and play so much faster whereas Apple Music will sit there for 1-5 seconds at the beginning of the song trying to buffer. Not sure why something so basic is a problem.

I admire what Apple is trying to do and the UI is getting better with Apple Music/iTunes but there's still a lot of polish that it needs.

Very curious how Pandora's on-demand offering will be especially since they have Rdio's platform to build on.

Jesus... Apple Music in China is ridiculously cheap. It's 10RMB/Mo. for normal plan. It's 5RMB/Mo. for student. That's $0.75/Month.... Freakin' awesome. There is nothing that beats Apple Music in terms of price (in China).
You pay for what you get. You know in such a heavily censored country, there would be nothing much available over there.

I have not. In fact, most of the highly recommended iPhone music app alternatives don't have iPad counterparts. Fortunately, I find the music app on the iPad tolerable (but still not enjoyable) simply because the screen is so large.

So, as faculty member in my university, I have an email address that UNiDAYS accepts.

So, is this really a "student" price or an "education" price? Would it be correct if I get the special price, given the fact that I'm not a student but still fully related to the institution?

Question: Do I need to continue my iTunes Match subscription if I pay for Apple Music?
I would like to know this too.

I know I can keep both. I'm just wondering if I need to.

My son is in high school (actually the equivalent here in the UK). He is a member of Unidays and qualifies for a student discount on Spotify. Unfortunately, Apple only offers the Apple Music discount to college/university students so my son does not qualify. He (and his friends) therefore all subscribe to Spotify. I guess Apple is not concerned about trying to encourage subscriber support and loyalty from a younger age.
College and university students tend to get discounts on things because that demographic tends to be dirt poor.

Ha
Made me laugh how WRONG
I used to go out with a few University intelligent girls in my late teens (engaged to to one, Hi Jo x) and early twenties whose parents had/have houses worth millions now, huge swimming pools - one the size of a very large house!, that was just the pool, Rolls the whole shooting match.

Very very humble lovely people and you'd never guess their wealth speaking to them.

Never judge, I learned at an early age, you could be speaking to a 'secret millionaire'.

I said "tends to". Reading comprehension. Do you have it?

Yes, there's college students with rich parents, but many, many are living on their own for the first time and just trying to scrape by. Or have you never heard of the cliche of getting through college surviving on ramen noodles?

I would be interested to see a chart showing Apple's financial contribution to the Project RED fund over the past 15 years. I bet the amount given has gone down considerably since Cook took over because they've got very few product RED products to buy compared to the days of the RED iPods.

Hi
Hope your not so patronising when not hiding infront of a computer screen.
I think you are WRONG most Uni students have middle+ income parents, but the sons and daughters prefer to 'go it alone' as their parents did.

Why do they have student pricing for music? I can understand for software, is it because students are learning the software and are less likely to make big money on it but will use it later on to do so.

Student pricing for music, should allow them to have senior, veteran pricing, etc.

I missed out on Uni undortunately, but my experience of friends that went and stayes with their sound system (turntable and speakers) was as important as their duvet when they 'left home'.
Cheers

No, I'm not that patronizing in real life. Comment threads here seem to have gotten extra thick and whiny in recent years, though.

Anyway, they're still going it alone. The fact that their parents back home are doing OK doesn't change the fact that they have limited means. I went to college, and aside from the kids with rich parents, everyone I knew was struggling with money. There's a reason student debt haunts people for so long. Even kids who live at home can have it rough. I commuted by train from home for an hour and a half each way, and had to pay for everything out of my pocket. It's a pain balancing a job and school.

But hey, you dated some rich college girls, so obvs everyone in college is rich.

I imagine because music plays a central role in your life, personal and social, at that age. More so than later on.

"But hey, you dated some rich college girls, so obvs everyone in college is rich."

Another dig, so sad.

I dated some not wealthy but intelligent girls but unforunately most didn't have the drive to make the most of their potential.

Most of the well brought up wealthy students that I knew were taught how to be them selves in all different circumstances.

They faded beautifully in the normality of Uni life dispite their parents wealth.
ie - you would never have guessed, so maybe it was easily missed. Please dont judge the Uni girl in Starbucks tomorrow with holes in her sweater she may well have a dad worth 10M+, girls especially like to hide it.
Wealthly girls want to see what its like to 'slum it' - so all equal at Uni

They allow you to store your MP3 for free, most people use it to store illegal MP3.
