Ok, I just did this. I'm interested to see if this is true (I know it has happened when I do web searches).

I tried it once after I saw a video about it and shockingly it worked.

Needless to say I deleted the Facebook app immediately, but I know I am still being tracked by Amazon, Google and probably Microsoft in other ways which I cannot avoid, because similar things still happen to both me and my wife that can only be explained by surveillance by tracking.

I thought it was coincidence that certain products would be advertised to me after I've talked about or searched for them, but then it kept happening. It's creepy and I don't like it.

I will never buy a smartspeaker.

Planning to murder someone in your own home? Or planning to be murdered as an insurance scam and don't want it solved?

Which companies don't have your personal information? Amazon, Google, and yes Apple using your info to improve products, services, and sell ads... so what? None of them are selling your info, because it's valuable to them. "You are the product" is a tired meme that needs to die, even though it's true. Even at Apple.

I suggest you do that thing and go and download all the data Google has on you, and then all the data Apple has on you.

You won't need to go over it in detail, the difference in file size should tell you all you need to know.

You are likely going to have an Iphone or Ipad if you have a Homepod so you don’t need the HP to output to another speaker (and why would you—its excellent on its own-even better with 2). I output to bluetooth speakers (boom2s) all the time outside with my iphone.
The whole idea of a smart speaker is doing these things hands free.

Don't expect a HomePod 2 then. A lot of folks wasted $349

Not exactly. I didn't buy a HomePod just so I could play Apple Music. I bought it because it's a great speaker, acts as a HomeKit hub, and handles all my smart home commands. The fact that you can soon play Apple Music through an Echo makes no difference to me.

I don't see this as a threat to HomePod. HomePod's audio quality is miles ahead of anything Amazon offers. I've experienced this personally, and the reviews say the same. But it has a steep price tag.

Amazon Echo devices are low cost. They are on the lower end in terms of audio (I found this especially noticeable in bass). But this solves the cost issue.

Until Apple launches a lower-cost speaker, having Apple Music on Echo devices are a good thing. But I don't see this as a negative for HomePod.

Except Sonos speakers now have Alexa and they are comparable in quality to the Homepod. A lot of people like me already have a Sonos setup at home and being able to add a smart speaker to that setup that I can use with Apple Music is very appealing.

Also, I can't ask Siri to play BBC Radio stations (which I listen to the 50% of the time I'm not listening to Apple Music) but you can with Alexa and Google Home.

No, I plan on keeping my private conversations private. It has nothing to do with legality of activity. That article demonstrates that with one of those in your home, nothing is private.

I've just finished listening to Steve Job's autobiography again as I do every six months or so...

Apple is fast becoming the company they were when Steve was ousted.

Sprawling product lines, too many SKU's. They need to bring back that laser precision focus they once had.

"iTunes on Windows made sense as it sold more iPods"

Apple Music on Android and Amazon Echo, not so sure that's a great idea.

I 100% agree that they are losing focus. There are 5 iPad models not including storage sizes to choose from. I remember when there was one. There are 7 current iPhone models to choose from (excluding storage). I remember when there was one. I miss the days when Apple was focused. Even my wife agrees that something seems different with Apple... and she isn't into tech.

I have 5 (2 Google and 3 Amazon). I received them all for free through various promos (okay, I paid $1 for a 3 month Spotify plan that also included a Google Home Mini). They are useful for checking news, setting timers, controlling IOT devices, and getting quick answers to various questions.

And they're likely government wiretap-ready. At no extra charge!

Sounds like a lot of work without much return.
Perhaps. When my 2015 13MBP dies I'm not sure I can justify the extra cost of a new MBP compared to a Dell XPS. Having had a 15" XPS a couple of years ago, I am fully aware that they are not as good as a MBP, but the price difference for the extra 10% imo build quality and OS doesn't add up.

For a similar spec 13" XPS vs MBP there is a £550/$700 difference.
For a similar spec 15" XPS vs MBP there is a £950/$1200 difference.

As much as I love my MBP, there is absolutely no way I can justify that.

I hope you can say "Alexa play X" instead of "Alexa play X on Apple Music".
Once you setup your default music app in Alexa, it will always pick Spotify/Apple Music etc when you say "Alexa, play Green Day" for instance.

I do enjoy the irony of people registering on a public forum, with every IP they access from being logged into a database (along with other data, all associated to an email address) to tell the world how much they value their privacy and how stupid everyone else is for not doing so.

Yeah but the great thing is that now I have no reason to buy a $349 less versatile speaker to play Apple music and control my smart home because I already have nice speakers that can do it with a cheap echo dot. Sure it's not as pretty. But it's certainly better sound connected to a home theater etc.

Just amazes me the level of paranoia. Omg, for 25yrs I was an outlaw, never lost sleep, worried about the govt, or even helicopters that flew overheard with heat and ir. The only thing I worried about was cops raiding me shooting my dogs. Lawyers would've fixed my end.
Now I am totally licensed bonded and legal it means even less.
Trust me, the gov't isn't worried about what 99% of us do. As far as Alexa and Google targeting ads, well ads aren't a big deal and I find them useful sometimes.
