Unlike Apple's $349 dumbspeaker my $17 echo dot can output to any speaker with Bluetooth or aux input.
You are likely going to have an Iphone or Ipad if you have a Homepod so you don’t need the HP to output to another speaker (and why would you—its excellent on its own-even better with 2). I output to bluetooth speakers (boom2s) all the time outside with my iphone.

I’m thinking about picking up a Echo Dot just to mess around with the platform based on this alone. Why the radio silence from Apple on upcoming HomePod features?

This partnership creates so many questions for me.

Will there be future integrations with Alexa and other iCloud services?
Will Apple abandon Siri or work collaboratively with Amazon to make Alexa the default assistant?
What does this mean for the future of the HomePod line, or for the future of an entry level HomePod line?
Does this mean Apple may integrate with Google Home as well?
Could this be the beginning of the end of HomeKit?

No.

Apple Music has been on Android practically since day 1. This is no different.

Apple products for sale again on Amazon. Amazon opening their deviecs to Apple Music...

sounds like someone buried the hatchet and made up.

I think as Apple focuses on services, you will see them on more platforms than before.

For the most part, Alexa speakers don't compete with HomePod as a speaker. I think this just means we won't necessarily see a $29 HomePod.
Please please please allow Mac OS to run on non-Apple hardware and watch them take over the OS game.

I couldn’t disagree more. I prefer Siri because it isn’t built specifically to sell me things.
I use Alexa many times a day. She has never offered to sell me anything. Just because she has that ability should not be a issue. She can do lots of things I will never do. On the other hand ordering your paper towels from the kitchen by voice is kinda cool.

Personally, I do not care if it listens to my conversations. I am not doing anything illegal.
It is not the illegality or not of your conversations that the likes of Google and Amazon are interested in.
It is all about increasing their data profile of you, me, and everyone so that the resulting advertising can be (in theory) more appropriate.
Personally, I won't have any of these devices in my home, Apple ones included but that's just me.

Just dumped my 8 Alexa devices for Google Homes. It’s years ahead in my opinion.

Funny -- I'm dumping my Google Home devices for Alexa ones. Google Home was better for random search-type requests, but it seemed far worse to me for nearly everything else. Plus, the ability to set zones (including overlapping zones) for home control stuff in Alexa blows Google Home away in my view. Those are just my observations, though; I'm interested in other views.

I don't see this as a threat to HomePod. HomePod's audio quality is miles ahead of anything Amazon offers. I've experienced this personally, and the reviews say the same. But it has a steep price tag.

Amazon Echo devices are low cost. They are on the lower end in terms of audio (I found this especially noticeable in bass). But this solves the cost issue.

Until Apple launches a lower-cost speaker, having Apple Music on Echo devices are a good thing. But I don't see this as a negative for HomePod.

So someone easdropping on your personal life in general is ok with you? There are far more implications with the device than one being concerned with criminal behavior being revealed. :apple:

I assume you posted this comment from a burner phone connected to a free wifi spot from inside your car with blacked out windows and fake number plates that you bartered for with remelted gold bars?

Tin foil hat. The amount of processing required would be excessive to handle all the data load.

Also, it’s easily testable: chrck how much data is being sent from the device - given the amount of background conversation.

There's a better way to test it.

Open Facebook app and talk out loud about something you would never even think of normally buying (for example if you don't have a dog, talk about dog food for 60 seconds)

Then over the next few hours watch adverts pop up in your Facebook, Twitter, web ads for dog food.

Siri is always asking to rub my feet...so, I'm sorta confused.

But this is an awesome move. I have half a dozen Echo's around my house and zero HomePods (price, lack of features).

I've just finished listening to Steve Job's autobiography again as I do every six months or so...

Apple is fast becoming the company they were when Steve was ousted.

Sprawling product lines, too many SKU's. They need to bring back that laser precision focus they once had.

"iTunes on Windows made sense as it sold more iPods"

Apple Music on Android and Amazon Echo, not so sure that's a great idea.

The price is subsidised with your personal information. You are the product.
Which companies don't have your personal information? Amazon, Google, and yes Apple using your info to improve products, services, and sell ads... so what? None of them are selling your info, because it's valuable to them. "You are the product" is a tired meme that needs to die, even though it's true. Even at Apple.

Ok, I just did this. I'm interested to see if this is true (I know it has happened when I do web searches).

Apple’s music “stuff” has been on other platforms for a long time going back to iTunes on Windows.

This is a small step in the right direction. I'd like to see the three major home technologies -- Apple, Amazon, and Google -- do a better job supporting each other. I'd like to see, for example, Alexa not only support Apple Music but be able to play music I own in iTunes.

Apple is not going to compete with a company that practically gives the hardware away. As a speaker, HomePod is miles ahead of Alexa speakers for pure audio quality. This give Apple an additional customer base for Apple Music as a service, and it means people can shut up about wanting a $29 HomePod that Apple was never going to produce.

There's no such thing as "Alexa speakers". Alexa is the software for voice control. Amazon has voice assistant hardware that either has a built in speaker (like Echo) or which connects to any* existing speakers (Dot).

*excluding the Apple HomePod which has no non-proprietary audio inputs.

So what you mean is that Apple's HomePod sounds better than Amazon's Echo speaker that costs about a third of the price, assuming you also have the additional hardware (e.g. iPad, iPhone, Mac) necessary to get music to play on the HomePod in the first place.
