Crazy. I can't begin to imagine how hard it must be to decipher regulations in every country where Apple sells their products, to ensure they don't get cross-ways with some obscure requirement.
Apple earned $30B in worldwide net profit last quarter. Thats $333M in profit every day. I think they should be able to afford hiring people in each country they do business in to help out with region-specific regulations.

I do resent Apple for removing things and giving virtuous-sounding reasons to excuse themselves. I think they deserve whatever punishments they end up getting until they rethink this approach. However, the cost savings of these cheat-the-customers-while-sounding-like-a-hero tactics should far outweigh any backlash. So they will keep doing this, and society will keep giving them virtuous-sounding excuses so those who disagree will be made to sound like backward jerks.

I'm still a bit peeved that they didn't include a charger.
I had a ton of the USB-A chargers, but no USB-C chargers when I bought my last iPhone.
So yeah... it sucks that I have to go and buy one.
Apple certainly didn't lower the price of the phone once they started removing things like headphones and chargers.

Which model did you choose that didn't work with any of your existing lightning cords and USBA chargers?

(LOL @ people "disagreeing" with a simple question... :p )

Why is everyone defending Apple? Do we really believe this was done for environmental reasons, as all other devices still included the power brick, and they are all different types STILL. A charger is the bare minimum tool needed for a phone, to keep it charged. Also again first time customers will have to still pay full price for their phone, plus a charger. I’m not crying for Apple, I’m just surprised Brazil of all places is where this regulation came from.

somebody is about to get fired. should have seen this coming. if they have to give out chargers in Brazil to do business there, so be it.

At one point, it seemed plausible that Brazil would have forced Apple to include a charger in the box for every ‌iPhone‌ sold in the country. Procon-SP said that the charger is an "essential part" of the smartphone experience.

Really?!?! Rubbish!!!!

Dang! Does this mean that I can sue an auto manufacturer for not supplying me with gas for the life of my car? After all, gas is an essential part of the car experience.

More like the auto manufacturer not including the “fuel pump”.

What's illustrative is the differing logic in parts of the world. In Brazil, a "tie sale" apparently means that you have to bundle a charger because if you don't you're forcing the customer to buy something else. In the US a "tie sale" means that you're bundling things and not allowing them to buy the part somewhere else.

In the US, it's about consumer choice. In Brazil, it's about forcing the consumer to make a choice. So interesting.

Doing business in BRICS countries is always going to be a pain. The have regulatory rackets that claim to be protecting local manufacturing and industry from unfair foreign competition, but, in the end, it's always the consumers that pay more for things that were never going to be produced there anyway. Even China, the manufacturing exception to the rule, has managed to alienate foreign brands in favor of home-grown products with its "Rules for ye, but not for thee" policies.

In doing away with the audio jack there was way to have privacy for calls or music. Whoops! Apple makes wireless ear pods for $100s more than the $10 ear buds they used to include with their audio stuff.

Another point is Apple stores are not in every city or out in the country side. Remember they ship the phone anywhere and in a remote area that could create an issue

Apple’s charger they were including is so underpowered it is basically worthless anyways. Other than the convenience of it being in the box, I am not sure who would really want Apple’s 5W charger when you can buy one with the same form factor that is 30W. The majority of the included chargers were destined for junk drawers and landfills.

Just ridiculous. I cannot fathom how anyone can reasonably make the argument that every device manufacturer has to include a charger in the box for every device they sell forever.
I can't fathom how anyone can justify charging $1000 for a piece of aluminum and glass that requires a charger to keep operating past the first day, and not include it.

Lol what a ridiculous take. The equivalent to the gas in your analogy is electricity, not a charger. Last I checked, Apple doesn't supply electricity for the life of the product.

It's not about defending Apple. I do think they have way too much market power and are abusing it, for example.

I'm just actually convinced that including the charger in the box doesn't make sense. Most people who are in the Apple ecosystem have a bunch of those chargers already. I simply don't need another one the next time I buy a new iPhone unless they change the charger concept. But as long as the charger stays the same, I'm covered with chargers for any new iPhone, pair of AirPods, or whatever I'll buy in the future. I have enough of them, so why give me another one? It's just unnecessary.

And I'm not naive enough to believe Apple wouldn't charge more if they did include the charger.

The $1k penalty isn't about the cost of the charger, it's about telling companies that they have to obey local laws is they want to do business in that country. Slapping them with a $30 charge wouldn't impact their bottom line and they would ignore it as a cost of doing business, but dinging them for almost the entire cost of the phone is difficult for Apple and its shareholders to ignore.

It's pretty obvious that Apple should have always supplied a charger for free with purchase of a phone if you needed one. That is the only way that this could be argued as an environmental decision, instead of a financial decision.

It's been reported that Apple made an additional 6.5B USD in PROFITS from removing the charger. https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/ar...providing-chargers-earphones-new-iPhones.html
