They just happen to have that custom model in store which is not always the case
Th 16GB and 1TB is a common configuration available in the majority of stores. The other combination is the 8GB and 256TB. I have checked stores in Atlanta, Nashville, Knoxville and they all have that combination available for immediate pickup. Even ordering online for delivery both combinations are available for next day delivery.

Surface Laptop 5 - 13.5", Platinum (Alcantara®), 12th Gen Intel® Core™ i5, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD.

It looks like Microsoft is using the same base model memory and storage configuration running Windows. I don’t understand why Apple‘s base configuration running MacOS with M2 processor is problematic for the large number of consumer level everyday users.

Interesting that you have to wait that long. The 8/10/16/1tb is also in stock for pick up today at my local apple store. I believe this conf is also one that apple builds for store stock. Even apple stores around me have this exact config in stock for pick up today

Nice try. Atlanta, Nashville and Knoxville. All of these cities happen to be like 10 000 kilometres away from where I live which in turn makes “next day delivery” next to impossible.

Surely, if someone shops around in the EU they may find a store where they have the desired configuration and with a bit of luck that store may ship internationally. Again, it won’t be a next-day-delivery.

The official Apple representative here occasionally offers 16/512 and 16/256 and if you are lucky enough, you may even get it in the desired colour.

So move closer to apple store

It is not prblematic it just works. People just want free hardware

And? I was merely trying to state that the 16GB and 1TB is a common configuration. Next day delivery comes from the warehouse, not the store.

For which it is not desgned though.
Rendering video is very resource intensive, on the processor and on the storage media. Designed or not. Regardless of which machine or configuration. I don't use the Surface for video rendering if I can avoid such process. It will work in a clutch situation. I have found that my MacBook Air M2 also tends to peg the CPU and struggle when applying adjustments to a couple thousand photographs.

М2 is actually better in video, because it got hardware decoders.

I think you're right, when I bought my M2 MBA a few weeks ago, that model was available in the five nearest Apple stores to me in the UK for same day collection.

Mind you, the one I picked up had clearly been kicking around in stock for a while, the battery had zero cycles but was 247 days old.

Greetings!

I got my M1 MacBook Air in May of 2021. While I was very satisfied with it, there was one huge problem I didn't think about at the time...

The future...

It's April of 2023, I have had this MacBook for almost 2 years (Longest out of any other laptop btw), and I have changed my lifestyle a lot.

I now make Apps for the Apple App Store. I was expecting it to be ultra memory efficient, but I was wrong...

Last Friday, I was using a whopping 18 GB of Swap, and I got the "Out of Memory" error on my MacBook.

As my app got more and more complex and had even more stuff, the Memory issues started getting a lot worse.

Another complaint I have about my MacBook is that my hands have grown a lot (This is a me problem tbh), and I am very excited for the 15 Inch MacBook Air. Probably something I will upgrade to once I can figure out how to bring it around.

HOWEVER!

I do not like Apple's shady practices of starting with 8 GB and 256 GB of Storage for this reason. First, my sister runs out of her storage a lot... and she is just an average user. I also see her with multiple different apps opened, treating her MacBook as if it had 16 GB of Ram.

What's even worse is that you cannot get the M1/M2 MacBook Air with 16 GB of Ram at an Apple Store without pre-ordering it... It's like Apple doesn't think the average user would use it. I have seen otherwise, a ton...

I wanted to get 16 GB of Ram back then, but needed a new laptop very fast. Being very satisfied with my M1 MacBook Air at the time, I cannot say I am very satisfied anymore, and I thought I was one of the biggest Apple Sheeps on this forum...

I am literally using 5.61 GB of Ram right now, with only 2 browser tabs opened.

I am no longer 100% Apple sheep because of Apple's shady practices of Ram Management.

The 15 Inch M3 Air sounds like a dream machine to me, AS LONG AS IT HAS 16 GB OF RAM STANDARD...
I am not willing to spend $1,899 on a consumer level machine. Thats probably how much the 16 GB 15 Inch M3 Air is going to cost tbh.

If that doesn't come, I might as well get this better deal:

All these M1/M2 Airs in circulation will probably become obsolete in like 3 years time because of how slow Apple is.
Mark my words!

And then most people will see how important 16 GB of Ram is for their everyday tasks, and possibly switch to Windows because iMessage exists there now.

When do you think Apple will make 16 GB Standard? Thanks in advance!
I agree, and it is why:

1-their laptops are not selling well. My MBP has 64GB but I got that machine at $1000 off on a super sale. Apple's profits are massively boosted on the Mac side by badly overcharging for RAM and HD storage.

2-many others, myself included, have begun using non apple laptops that are vastly cheaper with better specs

No, she's not. 256GB is more than enough storage for the average user, home and corporate. Heck, I'm only using 220GB on this MBP, and I've got 75GB+ of ALAC files in that mix, which the average user absolutely does not have.

Because they wouldn't. They might page out to disk occasionally, but with fast SSDs they won't notice it.
I have a 100GB photos library and a 120GB music one, neither of which is all that large.

Where are we users supposed to store them? The cloud?
