Greetings!

I got my M1 MacBook Air in May of 2021. While I was very satisfied with it, there was one huge problem I didn't think about at the time...

The future...

It's April of 2023, I have had this MacBook for almost 2 years (Longest out of any other laptop btw), and I have changed my lifestyle a lot.

I now make Apps for the Apple App Store. I was expecting it to be ultra memory efficient, but I was wrong...

Last Friday, I was using a whopping 18 GB of Swap, and I got the "Out of Memory" error on my MacBook.

As my app got more and more complex and had even more stuff, the Memory issues started getting a lot worse.

Another complaint I have about my MacBook is that my hands have grown a lot (This is a me problem tbh), and I am very excited for the 15 Inch MacBook Air. Probably something I will upgrade to once I can figure out how to bring it around.

HOWEVER!

I do not like Apple's shady practices of starting with 8 GB and 256 GB of Storage for this reason. First, my sister runs out of her storage a lot... and she is just an average user. I also see her with multiple different apps opened, treating her MacBook as if it had 16 GB of Ram.

What's even worse is that you cannot get the M1/M2 MacBook Air with 16 GB of Ram at an Apple Store without pre-ordering it... It's like Apple doesn't think the average user would use it. I have seen otherwise, a ton...

I wanted to get 16 GB of Ram back then, but needed a new laptop very fast. Being very satisfied with my M1 MacBook Air at the time, I cannot say I am very satisfied anymore, and I thought I was one of the biggest Apple Sheeps on this forum...

I am literally using 5.61 GB of Ram right now, with only 2 browser tabs opened.

I am no longer 100% Apple sheep because of Apple's shady practices of Ram Management.

The 15 Inch M3 Air sounds like a dream machine to me, AS LONG AS IT HAS 16 GB OF RAM STANDARD...
I am not willing to spend $1,899 on a consumer level machine. Thats probably how much the 16 GB 15 Inch M3 Air is going to cost tbh.

If that doesn't come, I might as well get this better deal:

All these M1/M2 Airs in circulation will probably become obsolete in like 3 years time because of how slow Apple is.
Mark my words!

And then most people will see how important 16 GB of Ram is for their everyday tasks, and possibly switch to Windows because iMessage exists there now.

When do you think Apple will make 16 GB Standard? Thanks in advance!
I completely disagree. Just because some of us need more RAM or storage doesn’t mean that needs to be the required minimum to purchase. It’s kind of like you can buy a Ford F150 with a V-8 or a lesser V6. You have people that will say that all trucks should have a V-8. Sure if you’re pulling a trailer or using it to haul things you need the more powerful engine. How about the person that just wants a truck to haul some furniture when they move or maybe they just like a truck. Should we force them to buy the V-8 model?

it’s the same thing with the MacBook for instance. My mom uses her MacBook Air to browse the web, watch YouTube videos, search things online, and message me. Should she be forced to pay for the 16 GB/512 GB configuration for this? You have many people here saying that should be the minimum configuration so we’re going to add $400 to her purchase price.

Wait, you thought it was going to be free? Do you really think Apple is going to just give free upgrades even if it becomes the“new standard”? No that’s just insane, especially in this economy with inflation out of control. It’s surprising that they are not raising the prices on existing models.

I think at some point we’re going to see people doing basic things needing more than 8 GB/256 GB configuration. I don’t think that is anytime soon. It’s more than enough for web browsing and light office work. I can see this changing 2 to 3 years out but not before then.

Also, I’m sure many people have said this, but I didn’t read through all the comments. Just because you’re using memory doesn’t mean you need this amount of memory. I had a Mac mini with 32 GB of RAM and it would frequently go over 20 GB used with doing light tasks. If I didn’t know any better, I would think 16 GB is not enough for me. You have to look at the memory pressure. That’s where it’s going to tell you how much it’s effecting your performance. There are some tasks that need significant amounts of memory. Most people know if they need it. I was messing around with GarageBand on my Mac mini. I had a file that would put memory pressure into red with my 32 GB. Clearly if I wasn’t just playing around and needed a computer to do that task, I would’ve needed 64 GB or more.

They already have a laptop monopoly; thus, they can make you pay extra for 16gb ;)

It's all well and good to want 16 GB as the base, but how would Apple actually price it? They'd probably keep their profit margins the same and then I wouldn't be able to afford a new MacBook Air. Think about it.

It appears that at least some variations of the iPhone 15 will have 8GB RAM, come fall.

If Apple pushes iPhone to 8GB RAM, then a Mac sure as heck had better be given 16GB RAM.

Period.

No, she's not. 256GB is more than enough storage for the average user, home and corporate. Heck, I'm only using 220GB on this MBP, and I've got 75GB+ of ALAC files in that mix, which the average user absolutely does not have.

Because they wouldn't. They might page out to disk occasionally, but with fast SSDs they won't notice it.
I'm only using 55GB on my iPad Pro which is my main computer and has 128GB... and similarly on my "real" Windows computer that also has 128GB storage.
