Not a watch:

:D
A hideous monstrosity

I've had the Series 3, 5, 6 and now 7 and they scratch at the slightest thing. I did have a SS/Sapphire S5 and the screen stayed pristine but the casing got chipped just putting a golf club back in a bag!
Stainless Steel got chipped on a golf bag? Or on a club?

The Apple Watch Pro will only be Pro by name. No professional athlete will use it for training.

This is my expectation as well. Same basic design, just more rugged with flat glass and titanium housing.

I just can’t see Apple deviating from a smartwatch centric device into one that is sports and athletics focused.
It would require a massive change in usability. Moving from a primarily touch display to a button based one.

Ask any ‘pro’ athlete and they prefer buttons.

It could a combination of touch and buttons. Perhaps the rotating crown can remain to scroll menus. But a single button for quick, easy accurate starting and stopping is a must.

They’ll also need to achieve similar battery life to that of Garmin’s AMOLED models, because we know Apple isn’t going to adopt MIP displays.

There’s just so much to implement to be competitive. I don’t see Apple investing just to address a relatively small niche market.
Nevertheless, I hope to be surprised.

I've been so tempted by one of these but can't justify the expense when I have an Apple Watch that does the job well enough, especially for a novice runner like myself. Your post is definitely making that temptation harder to ignore...at this point I'll at least wait and see what the next versions of the Apple Watch are and go from there.

Unless you buy the 1,000 Epix or the watered down Venu plus, you will be stuck with the MIP screen, which is very hard to read indoors. ALL of Garmin’s watches are stuck with this 2010 era screen, hence the long battery life.

Yeah… I know they call it that. But then my iPhone could also classify as a big pocket watch

Only if you add a chain to it 😉

But seriously, just because the AW can do a lot of other things besides tell time doesn't negate the fact that it's still a watch. If you want, you can turn off all notifications and use a watch face that only has time-related display/functionality.

They don’t have to make a watch for special interest groups. The Apple Watch is already very geared towards fitness, they just need to beef that portion up a bit to be on the same level.
What do you define a special interest group? Many different features, suit different groups, of course Apple will search to improve on parts of the feature set, where it's shown to be (thru marketing) to be advantageous.
There has been published stats of the use of AW at the London and New York marathons, and the % use is in the 30-40%. However, as a runner and coach, the feature set on the AW for running and sports like triathlon, is rubbish. The physiological metrics are substandard, the ability to create workouts, plan training, and reviewing the same, is poor or non existent. It's clear that Apple, for whatever reason, are not looking at the marketing numbers properly, and taking their product towards meeting customers expections. The amount of people using AW in Yoga is minuscule, but then Apple seem to want the 'audience' of Peloton users.

I know it sounds crazy, but the Apple Watch is actually a watch.
Just not a conventional/traditional one. They redesigned a 16th century icon we all know and have accepted for hundreds of years. I just cannot accept a micro-engineered iPhone on the wrist and call it a watch. Phones are enough of a distraction, I don't need a mini iPhone on my wrist following me everywhere.... It's designed and functions like a watch though 😉😊.... You just have to accept that your watch is just a micro iPhone and not a conventional looking watch like my garmin fenix 6 below. This cost 4x as much as an apple watch so you tend to take a person's watch more seriously when you see one like this as opposed to just a puny black square that everyone has...it's just a mini iPhone on the wrist. They should make a real looking watch if they want to get true watch enthusiasts' business. I don't take that as a serious watch.... But apple will always want it to be touchscreen interfaced. They will always want it to mimic their other flagship products...because it helps increase their iPhone, iPad sales etc. I just don't want a touchscreen watch...especially not one as engaging and a distraction like the AW. They should make a true watch with a metal frame we are all familiar with that does not have touchscreen capability to get my attention. Do. not tell me the metal frame on the AW counts....

I have had a Fenix '1' since 2014......😜
I keep looking at newer models, but then feel it still works great, so why waste money on something that does the same.

I don't really use the software or apps, just compass/tracks etc.

The current Apple ad REALLY makes me chuckle.....showing the AW7 getting battered.....no way can it withstand that.
That is SICK you've had the watch that long and still stand by it.

They are both 'watches' because the basic principle of a watch is that it must be able to tell the time and both watches do that. The rest is just gimmicks to entice people to buy the watches.
That's one way to look at it. You won't throw hours away in your day interacting on your watch with a garmin though like you would an apple watch. The fact you can text on it...maybe now that will become a new public human behaviour we all have to get used to. People with both hands distracted and engaged in their watch and not paying attention to their environment, in addition to cell phones already doing that.

I couldn't disagree more. Watches have always looked a certain way for decades/hundreds of years. The apple watch is relatively new design and you think it looks better? Hmm... The garmin looks like what a watch should look like. It does NOT look like a workout device at all as you say. The fact that it IS one makes it that much more awesome. The apple watch is just a micro iPhone. Watches are relatively new territory for apple. Garmin has been making them for much longer and their specialty is GPS which shines on their watches. I have like 7 different bands for my garmin including the titanium one it came with. I don't agree one bit that the apple watch looks better. The garmin is a man's watch. Physical buttons and a swiss army knife of a watch.
For hundreds of years watches were a pocket watch and hung on a chain. That’s what they were supposed to be like.

Garmin Fenix 6 does NOT cost 4 times as much as an AW. If you are going to be a fanboy at least get the facts straight. Also the MIP screen on the Fenix line is absolutely trash. At least get the Epix.

Was replying to DMG35 pictures. But someone beat me to it. Apple watch is not a nice looking watch any watchface you put on it. Looks like a mini iphone or mini monitor. Not a watch. I have a fold 3 and a samsung classic watch 4 classic. Got bored with the notch on iphone and same software since iphone x.

No there are multiple stock faces and more in the ConnectIQ store. There are also various bands including metal.
I had the Garmin Titanium band with DLC coating. It cost $300. It was scratched up within 6 months. I paid $300 for an original Garmin band because I don’t use ANY after market bands on any of my watches. To Garmins credit when I showed them the scratched band, they replaced it with a “ refurbished “ one. Would I pay $300 for it again? Heck no.

Ok. But I would never have a watch with the 2010ish MIP screen.

Mulling over getting a 255, yes I know the screen is pants but I am envious of the recovery and training metrics. I'm going to see what the 8 brings but I am certainly not interested in an Apple 'rugged watch'. The beefy Garmins are ugly as sin to me, hideous things, a 255 or fenix 's' is plenty big enough for me.

Even the battery life doesn't really bother me on the AW, of course it would be nice if it were a day or two longer but no deal breaker. Having said that if I get the 255 I'm sure I would soon enjoy extended periods without charging.

p.s I dont care if a watch is round, square, rectangle, triangle, as long as it is not too big and does everything I want it to.

Obviously the aesthetic is a very subjective thing. I also find the AW aesthetics much superior than Garmin’s, which is a very good sports smartwatch, but that’s it. I personally don’t like the Garmin design, it is way too big for my wrist, it has a plastic body (with a metal bezel to trick the eye) and the non OLED versions have an archaic user experience. It’s a very narrowly focused device and great at that only thing.

Well this is obviously subjective. But take a look at the two photos below and tell me which one you think looks better for a formal or business event (assuming you want to wear a smartwatch to these events). Like I said, I personally like the look of the Garmin Epix 2, but I don't think its as classy looking as the Apple Watch. Again, looks are subjective.

You’re right. Garmin looks like a wall clock on wrist :)))
