Apple News+ Guide: Everything You Need to Know

I’d like to offer my take on News+, but since downloading 12.2 on my XS, my News app only crashes a few seconds after launch. I’ve restarted, tried cellular and WiFi networks independently. Boo this!

Anyone else caught in this News crash loop?

Update: filed a report with Apple Feedback. Found it interesting that in the toggle about which iOS version I was having an issue with, 12.2 wasn’t an option. Oh goodie.

For those that start their day with coffee and Apple News, I’d pass on an update until that is addressed.

Yep. Same here.

It's really, really stupid. News+ only lists magazines. No Newspaper tab. Probably because there are only 2. Click on Following and type in "Wall" or "Los." Click on the Times or the Journal and the stories available will list. Took me half an hour to figure this out. Dumb.

That’s actually not true. For one, the “following“ button is only on the iPhone. Second, that refers to channels which is a part of the old Apple news. So when you select wall street journal or any of the others it just means that you’re going to get access to articles In old apple news. Then when you go over the number of articles that you can read in a month you can’t read anymore.

In order to read articles from the Wall Street Journal or Los Angeles times in Apple News+, you need to scroll down on the home screen (at least on the iPad version) and you will see a section for each with a few articles from each. Once you click on one of the articles you can then swipe to the left and see the other articles. But it is not like the magazines where you get to peruse through the newspaper in a traditional style. It’s actually Pretty lame. On top of that, the article is displayed on the home screen for Wall Street Journal haven’t changed since I first updated my software and opened Apple News+ the first time.

The UI is absolutely terrible. There’s no way to see just magazines I’ve downloaded so that’s completely useless. I have to remember what I’ve downloaded and then find it again in the A-Z list. I love the concept, but not sure if we’ll stick with it without an easy way to see stuff you want.

“My magazines” are supposed to download automatically. Almost all of mine are downloaded but for some reason one or two of them still show the download icon. They are supposed to continue to download every time there’s a new issue if you have enough storage space.

Half the magazines I'm interested in are just digital copies of the pages and very difficult to read without lots of zooming and scrolling to see the full content. Along with the horrible and difficult to use UI this makes many of the provided magazines almost impossible to read.

Older magazine issues are just PDF's that you do have to zoom and scroll around on. Future issues should start to be formatted properly for phone and tablet.

Same here. I think because we’re essentially getting it as a one month trial linked to our account. Once it becomes a subscription, like Apple Music, it will appear on your family devices.

I hope this is the case... I might also contact support and see. I have no interest in sharing purchases other than my Music and News+ subscriptions. I’d hate to have to do all purchase sharing to get News+ to share :(

I think it is cool. I mean, so many magazines.

I want to make a motorcycle, so I found it cool to get the cycle mag. Also, National Geographic and a bunch of cooking magazines.

But, I would rather be able to get a 12 month card to pay. Month to month is fine, but I hate paying month to month.

Also, I think someone said you can not go to one specific magazine. That is not true. I went to National Geographic, clicked on the last issue that was released, after my sub. ended and I was on the magazine.

Is there a complete list of the 300 magazines somewhere?
The article has a link to the complete list of magazines. There's a section of the article titled "Subscribing to a Magazine". The link for the complete magazine list can be found in the sentence above this title.

I’m only finding pdf versions of the my favorite magazines. I was hoping for something better as shown on event. Definitely not paying 10$ after trial.

Can I run this on my Windows computers and Andriod phone? If Apple is serious about this service business they need to make sure the service runs on all major platforms.

Monopolized by the majors, so the same narrow news coverage you can find anywhere. Lousy UI. Never “learns” your preferences. I’ve been using the Apple News app since day one. I still have to suffer through countless Cosmo, Hollywood, etc articles even though I blocked all content from those rags ages ago. For all the buzz about “AI”, I'm not impressed.

This is what happens when a behemoth with a widely diversified customer base tries to satisfy everyone on one page. It’s like iTunes and Photos, does nothing more than annoy people. We need some competition. Google doesn’t cut it, no one else exists.

My Wife has an iPad Pro. She subscribed to the magazines under Texture many months ago. With Apple taking over the magazines we got the 1 month free trial and then started the paid subscription with Apple. Just a few days ago my wife noticed that she could not view any magazine. They were all labeled "Start Free Trial". Is this a major screw up for Apple since she never had any problems when Texture had the magazines.
Anyone know how to fix this since I am paying for a subscription of magazines that I can't see?

I’ve been waiting for the “future” for at least 10 years. Please let me know when it’s here.

Magazines available on the web are nothing new. Magazines simply scanned into pdf's are, unfortunately, not unusual. I gave up years ago and it appears nothing has changed. And I doubt Apple's marketing folks will be the change agent.

This is an area where the content providers don’t understand and the platform beanies don’t care.

I found the answer to my question. I hit the button "Start Free Trial" and it sent me to my Apple Log In. I was already logged in but I logged in again with Email and Password. The screen popped up and stated that I was already subscribed. Now we can see and read the magazines. I thought that Starting the free trial would double subscribe me and pay double. It didn't do that. All is working well now.:)

I love apple news+ not because I'm new to the Mac or that it reminds me of aol windows. It's because I am into soo many things like home theaters, computers, cooking, outdoors fishing... that the service fits me just right I think it's worth the $9.99 a month.

We unsubscribed from the Magazine for $9.99 a month after getting it working again. Apple needs to get it together like Texture was. We found that magazines are not updated until late, hard to load sometimes, sometimes it doesn't load. We already checked internet connections and no problem there, using Verizon Fios. Looked at reviews and people are complaining about the same problems we are having.

Wish apple news+ hadn’t come along. It’s not as good as Readly in the UK that I already pay for and Readly is cheaper too. I like Apple news as the free version, but now it’s full of adds and articles trying to get me to sign up for news+. I’m guessing the answer is no, but is there a way to tick some sort of “look I just don’t care about news+, so don’t ever ask me again” option?

I liked the Apple News app, gives me about enough articles etc etc and been using on iPhone, MPB and iPad from a while now. Then along comes Apple News+. It's everywhere, it's like a virus in the news app. I am searching, but, and even though it has its own tab, there is no way to turn it off. Talk about pushy grifting from Apple. If anyone knows how to get rid of this Apple News+ from my news feed, please let me know, or post on the Apple forum. That's not just terminate the subscription, it's GET RID of the virus like Apple News+ posts from my ness feed.

For those not subscribing to the Apple news+, but having a subscriptions from their website, if you try to read an article in the Apple news App which requires an Apple news plus subscription, there’s an option to sign in to your existing subscription in the news app. This option is given just below the “Try one Month Free” Apple news + subscription as seen in the screenshot.

There's a curated local news experience available in the Bay Area, Houston, Charlotte, San Diego, San Antonio, Miami, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, and Washington, D.C., where Apple provides coverage of topics important to local communities like dining and restaurants, weather, news and politics, and more.
Apple News has no facility to add any of the state-level or county-level or municipal-level news media for New Jersey. The local news section is essentially useless to people outside those markets.
