If they managed to snag the NY Times then I'd subscribe but I've read that the Times is pretty adamantly opposed to joining so I maintain a separate digital subscription. They have other good papers but I don't live in London or LA.

“I get my news from more reliable sources like rumor and small children.” - Sledgehammer

I actually rather like News+ if I’m honest. Before that I subscribed to Readly, for the magazine’s the wife and I like. I may browse the Internet every day for news and articles, but there’s still some quality journalism to be found in magazines, with articles that are not found anywhere else.

But I switched over to Apple after the free trial, as they have almost all of the same magazines Readly has which we are interested in, with the bonus of some decent newspapers as well.

I can however imagine that people such as myself are in a minority these days. Print (whether digital or traditional) is dying. When there’s so much “free” information to be found on the web, your average punter probably doesn’t see the value of a traditional format, quality journalism or not.

Reason: nobody reads magazines anymore in the magazine format.
Who reads newspapers and magazines any more? And the dwindling number of people that do are more likely to read the physical version than something on their iDevices.

Where do y’all get information from? You do realize Apple News isn’t sending paper editions to people’s homes, right?

I usually go to Drudge Report, which links to online articles, some of which are included in Apple News. Same thing with looking up recipes or home ideas. I come across a link and get taken to a magazine website.

Saying NO ONE will purchase this service is a ridiculous statement. For someone that subscribed to Consumer Reports and Forbes, they would already be saving money. The problem is Apple’s doing a poor job of letting people know about what this is and how beneficial it can be.

I can't say that Im especially surprised. It's surely a bit of a niche service in today's media climate of instant gratification over the internet. But I do hope it's able to stay afloat for those who do enjoy it.

Way too over priced for what you get. Maybe if it was bundled with one of the other services for that price..

Great concept, but it really was very poorly executed. Absolutely terrible, frankly. Hard to find and read the content you wanted. I dropped it shortly after the trial period.

That’s because news promotes fear, anger and negativity to popularise content. Also, no one trusts what’s written anymore.

Who wants to pay to feel fear, anger and negativity?

Thats why my news is Macrumors! 😁
maybe cos its full of fake news

Most hilarious reasons anyone could come up with.
Real reasons would be 1)Outdated format 2)No REAL material to hold in hands and put under wobbly table 3) Small amount of content 4) Region locked and no regional news content 5) Free and/or payable alternatives 6) Small target audience. I’m sure abolute majority of people under 35 don’t care about subscribing to news app.

I'm a news junkie and use Apple News and BBC for free content and NYT for paid content. Like other paid services, there are too many to choose from. I already have Netflix and Amazon Prime. The fact there is content on Hulu and who knows what else will promote piracy because the cord cutters will be spending just as much or more to get exclusive content on each service. Plus gaming services if they have it. Thus I like the idea what Apple News+ is, but I feel like I am only going to gravitate towards one or two premium publishers anyway I rather give them the money directly so they actually have more of a fighting chance staying in business.

That being said, with the web there are usually trivial ways around paywalls and with that one person that does pay, can always copy/paste into message boards like this.

It's very early days for the premium news product. I still see Apple News+ as the future of news and quality journalism.

I tried it for two months and then dropped it. The current implementation of Apple News+ has absolutely nothing to do with improving news consumption or promoting quality journalism. The only real benefit I saw was that on the rare occasions that one of the Apple News promoted stories interested me, I was pretty much guaranteed to be able to read it. On the other hand, when someone shared articles from a source that’s supposedly part of Apple News+, it was rarely available in the service, so what really was the point?

is it? I haven’t subscribed yet (but intend to). Can you give a few examples of fake news stories you’ve seen there - I’d like to know what I’ll be getting for my £9.99/month.
It isn’t whether the stories are fake or not. You are allowing another entity to “curate” the content you see. There is too much potential for that to go so very bad it scares the hell out of me.

The only solution to fake news is for each of us to take responsibility to be as widely read as possible, even from sources we don’t like. You are the only person who can protect you from fake news.

Does this mean we could see a return of Texture? Apple bought them out and screwed it up. Apple news is so difficult to find the magazines I used to enjoy.
